‘Salak Selatan hall to be handed over to DBKL, not demolished'
Federal Territories Land and Mines Office (PTGWP) has denied claims that the Kampung Baru Salak Selatan Community Hall will be demolished.
The hall is managed by Kampung Baru Salak Selatan Welfare Association, an umbrella body of seven non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
A PTGWP spokesperson said the red notice, which instructed occupants to vacate and demolish the structure, was an administrative requirement under the law.
'We are in the process of gazetting the land to legalise the hall.
'Once the gazettement is approved by the PTGWP director, it will be forwarded to the Attorney General's Chambers to be formalised,' the spokesperson said.
StarMetro had earlier reported that a red notice was issued on July 15 under Section 425(1) of National Land Code 1965.
The spokesperson said once the gazettement process was completed, the land would be transferred to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) for management.
'Until then, neither the association nor DBKL has jurisdiction over the site.'
A PTGWP spokesperson says the red notice is an administrative requirement under the law.
The clarification follows backlash from the association which claimed that no engagement had been carried out before the red notice was issued.
An association member, KL Lee, said the hall had been sealed while all their documents were still inside.
When contacted, association chairman Chin Yen Foo said they met with DBKL on Aug 4 to discuss the hall's future.
He was told that once the hall was legalised, it would be jointly managed by the association, the Federal Territories Residents Representative Council (MPPWP) and another NGO.
'All three will be allowed to maintain offices within the hall and have been asked to work together in the community's interest,' said Chin.
He appealed to DBKL to also consider legalising the surrounding structures, including the library, kindergarten, basketball court and food court.
'These facilities have been operating for many years,' said Chin.
A DBKL Community Development and Urban Well-being Department officer, who declined to be named, clarified that ample notice was given to the association but they had refused to comply.
The hall was rebuilt in 1983 after a fire destroyed the original wooden structure.
It was funded through a community fundraising drive, with DBKL matching every ringgit raised.

Sabah 40pct revenue claim: High Court to decide on Oct 3
KOTA KINABALU: The High Court will deliver its decision on Oct 3 on a judicial review application concerning Sabah's constitutional right to 40 per cent of the revenue derived from the state. Sabah Law Society (SLS) Immediate Past President Datuk Roger Chin said the date was set during a Zoom hearing on Tuesday. "This judicial review is a historic and significant legal action concerning Sabah's constitutional rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the Federal Constitution. "The matter has attracted substantial public interest as it addresses long-standing issues of revenue entitlement and fiscal autonomy for the state of Sabah," Chin said. He invited the public, civil society organisations, and the media to attend the open court proceedings. "The proceedings will be conducted in open court, reflecting the principles of transparency and public accountability in the administration of justice," he said. The SLS filed the judicial review against the Federal Government in June 2022. Leave was granted by the High Court in November of the same year. The Federal Government's subsequent appeals to the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court were both dismissed, in June 2024 and October 2024, respectively. This sent the case back to the High Court for a full hearing on its merits. In July, a High Court judge had set Aug 7 for an e-review to provide further directions. The SLS was represented by counsel Jeyan Marimuttu, while the Federal Government was represented by Senior Federal Counsel (SFC) Ahmad Hanir Hambaly @ Arwi, and the Sabah State Government's representative was State Attorney-General Datuk Brenndon Soh.

Zara's death exposes systemic failures: LDP
Published on: Tuesday, August 12, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 12, 2025 Text Size: 'This is not just about one child's death. It is about whether we are willing to confront systemic failures and take real action to ensure this never happens again,' Chin said. Kota Kinabalu: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) said the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir exposed systemic failures in protecting children and delivering justice. 'This is not just about one child's death. It is about whether we are willing to confront systemic failures and take real action to ensure this never happens again,' said its President Chin Shu Ying. Advertisement The Attorney-General's Chambers has ordered the exhumation of Zara's remains for a fresh post-mortem examination, which LDP welcomed as important for establishing the truth and restoring public confidence. However, he said the incident must catalyse broader institutional reforms beyond a single investigation. The party called for the establishment of an independent investigation panel comprising legal experts, child protection advocates, medical specialists and civil society representatives to ensure impartial oversight. On school safety, it called for mandatory 24-hour warden coverage in all boarding facilities, closed-circuit television installation in common areas and secure access controls. It also advocated compulsory anti-bullying education programs and annual safeguarding training for educational staff as well as confidential reporting channels for students to raise concerns without fear of reprisal. The party's reform agenda extends to legislative changes, including strengthened laws imposing clear accountability on educational institutions for student safety and stricter penalties for negligence or cover-ups by responsible parties. Also mandatory public reporting of serious school incidents with accompanying action plans. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
