Auto companies to meet PLI goals a year earlier
production-linked incentive
programme for automobiles and auto components (
PLI-Auto
) to achieve targets and exhaust the scheme funds in the fourth year itself.
The government approved the scheme in September 2021 with a ₹25,938 crore budgetary outlay. Incentives are disbursed for meeting goals including incremental production, investment and domestic value addition 2023-24 onwards.
A senior official aware of the scheme's progress said the goal will likely be met a year ahead of expectations. The Centre's goal has been to create global champions and that it is on track, the official said, brushing aside criticism that many small auto component makers are not meeting scheme goals, or are completely excluded from it.
Tata Motors
, Mahindra & Mahindra,
Bajaj Auto
, Ola Electric and TVS Motor Co are among the major companies that have raised claims under the scheme till now.
"Budgetary fund allocation for current fiscal is expected to be exhausted in a few months...the trend suggests there will be much higher disbursements in next two years," another senior official told ET. Budget 2025-26 earmarked ₹2,818.85 crore for disbursal under this scheme.
Five automobile companies have raised claims totalling more than ₹2,000 crore for achieving the scheme's goals in FY25. Officials said ₹322 crore have been released so far for FY24.
While auto companies are faring well, there are concerns about component makers not meeting goals.

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M) on Saturday said it has completed the acquisition of a 58.96% controlling stake in commercial vehicle maker SML Isuzu Ltd from Japan's Sumitomo Corporation and Isuzu Motors for Rs 555 crore. Following the buyout, the company has been renamed 'SML Mahindra Ltd', M&M said in a statement. The reconstituted board will be chaired by Mahindra Group veteran Vinod Sahay, who has been appointed Executive Chairman effective August 3, 2025. Dr Venkat Srinivas took charge as Executive Director and CEO from August 1, PTI reported. Both leaders will continue in their existing roles—Sahay as President of Aerospace & Defence, Trucks, Buses & Construction Equipment at Mahindra Group, and Srinivas as Business Head for Mahindra Truck & Bus (MTB) and Construction Equipment (CE). The acquisition also triggers a mandatory open offer to acquire up to 26% stake from public shareholders, in line with SEBI's takeover regulations. M&M said the move is a significant step toward expanding its presence in the >3.5-tonne commercial vehicle (CV) category, where its current market share is just 3%, compared to 54.2% in the sub-3.5-tonne light commercial vehicle segment. The company aims to double its market share in the segment to 6% immediately, with a medium-term goal of 10–12% by FY31 and over 20% by FY36. SML, established in 1983, is a listed firm with nationwide presence and a strong position in the intermediate and light commercial vehicle (ILCV) bus segment, where it commands a 16% market share. The Competition Commission of India had approved the transaction in June. The board's resolution to rename the company as 'SML Mahindra Limited' is subject to clearances from the Registrar of Companies (RoC), Central Registration Centre, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and shareholders. NDA ally Chandrababu is first CM to flag US tariffs: ‘Must take precautions considering impact on agri exports'
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has said that his government will take precautions considering the impact of the US tariffs imposed on India. Rolling out the Annadata Sukhibhava scheme aimed at farmers, a part of the 'Super Six' promises guaranteed by the TDP in its election manifesto, which aims to give ₹20,000 per year to farmers in the state with support from the Centre, Naidu said, 'As the US has imposed 25% tariffs on India, we must take precautions considering the impact on agricultural exports.' On July 31, US President Donald Trump announced the tariffs on India, and warned of additional penalties. Naidu, whose Telugu Desam Party is an NDA partner both at the state and the Centre, is the first CM to raise the issue. While addressing farmers in Darsi in Prakasam district, Naidu assured aqua farmers that his government will extend all help to them to overcome the 25 per cent US tariffs. 'My government is providing support to aqua farmers by providing them electricity at Rs 1.50 per unit. The increase in tariff by the US will burden aqua farmers in the state. We have taken it into consideration and we act upon it. I have called for a meeting with all aqua farmers. We will discuss with them the issue and prepare an action plan to absorb that extra burden,'' he said. In April, Naidu had written to the Centre to shield the state's aquaculture products and aqua sector from the heavy tariffs being levied by the Trump administration. In a letter to the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, the Chief Minister asked the Centre to come to the rescue of aqua farmers by making efforts to exempt aqua products from this additional duty. Informing the Union Minister that the fisheries sector is playing a crucial role in the State's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Naidu said that the Centre should stand by the aqua farmers when they are in deep crisis. The Chief Minister mentioned in the letter that the US Administration has imposed a 27 per cent import duty on marine food exports from India. In 2023-24 fiscal marine food products worth $2.55 billion were exported from India to the US of which shrimp alone accounted for 92 per cent, he stated. The US is imposing a duty of only 10 per cent on exporters like Ecuador which indirectly harms India while benefiting such countries, he wrote.
