
KPDN week in Osaka Expo explores opportunities for international market expansion
In addition to strengthening strategic networks, KPDN's participation in the expo is an important manifestation of the whole-of-nation concept approach in helping KPDN fulfil its mandate more effectively, in line with the goals of MADANI Malaysia.
'The key events lined up throughout the KPDN Week at the expo include upholding the Retail Digitalisation Initiative (REDI) initiative, which has been chosen by the Japan Association for the 2025 Exposition, as the main organiser, to promote the theme for the week, that is 'The Future of Community and Mobility'.
'This initiative is showcased through sharing sessions by panellists under the topic 'Retail Digitalisation Initiative (ReDI): Driving Cashless Adoption and Technology in Rural Malaysia', the KPDN said in a statement today.
The session also highlights the success of the government's strategic collaboration with industry players, namely Malaysian e-wallet providers like TNG Digital Sdn Bhd and Payments Network Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PayNet) as well as retain entrepreneur representatives in providing exposure to rural traders regarding operating businesses digitally.
In addition to the REDI initiative and the involvement of strategic partners of e-wallet providers, the interactive approach at the KPDN booth also witnessed the presence of direct-selling industry players under the Direct Selling Association of Malaysia (DSAM) and Malaysia Direct Distribution Association (MDDA).
'The KPDN, as the regulator of this industry, also provides the KPDN Week platform to assist in promoting Malaysia's direct-selling products as well as connecting them with strategic partners in Japan to pave the way towards market access and collaborative networks,' it added.
Meanwhile, the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), which is an agency under KPDN, is also taking part in raising the visibility of the government's efforts in the protection and registration of intellectual property.
This includes sharing innovative sketches of batik motifs using eco-friendly clay patented by MyIPO as well as the protection and registration of Geographical Indications such as the Melaka Nyonya Kebaya, Terengganu Copper and Selangor Wau Kapal.
The KPDN added that the exhibition not only allows international visitors to get to know locally-made products but is an important step in upholding intellectual property as a catalyst for knowledge-based economic development that can attract investors.
The six-month-long Osaka Expo runs from April 13-Oct 13 while the KPDN Week is from May 25-June 1.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) is intensifying its efforts to shape future policies and legislation that address the growing challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI) in the intellectual property landscape. MyIPO said its priority, as the custodian of intellectual property rights in Malaysia, is to strike a balance between protecting the rights of creators and safeguarding public interest, while ensuring that the country's IP framework remains progressive, resilient, and aligned with global technological developments. MyIPO deputy director general (operations) Yusnieza Syarmila Yusoff said the rapid adoption of AI has raised new questions about ownership and accountability in the creative and innovation space. 'Currently, IP laws recognise human creators through protection under copyright, patents, trademarks, and related rights. 'However, with the increasing use of AI in generating content, inventions, and designs, the critical issue is determining who owns the rights when a creation is produced entirely by a machine. 'Without clear ownership, it becomes difficult to take legal action in cases of infringement,' she said at the National Dialogue on Intellectual Property and Artificial Intelligence today. Yusnieza said this challenge has prompted MyIPO to initiate broader discussions on how Malaysia's IP legislation can evolve to remain relevant. 'The aim is to assess whether current laws are sufficiently comprehensive, and to consider whether new provisions, exceptions, or limitations are required – particularly concerning fair use and digital applications of IP. 'By driving national dialogue and engaging with industry players, academics, and policymakers, MyIPO seeks to build an IP ecosystem that not only protects creators but also fosters innovation and safeguards public interest,' she added. She emphasised that MyIPO's long-term vision is to establish a forward-looking legal framework that maintains robust intellectual property rights in the era of AI, thereby ensuring Malaysia's competitiveness in the global innovation economy. The conference, themed 'Owning the Future – IP in the Age of AI', brought together policymakers, legal experts, researchers, academics, industry leaders, and other stakeholders to examine how AI is reshaping intellectual property protection both domestically and internationally. Discussions centred on pressing issues, including the recognition of machine-generated works, the role of AI in patent and design creation, and the continued protection of human works in a rapidly evolving technological environment. The dialogue also served as a platform to bridge the gap between existing laws and emerging technologies, laying the groundwork for resilient IP policies that can withstand fast-paced change. For the wider public, the outcomes of the dialogue are expected to influence how people create, trade, and use digital content. Whether as designers, writers, entrepreneurs, or consumers, the policy directions shaped through this initiative will determine how intellectual property rights and protections for creative works and innovations are upheld in the future. Globally, AI and IP have become central policy concerns. The World Intellectual Property Organization (Wipo), through its Wipo Conversation series, has convened stakeholders worldwide to examine both the opportunities and challenges arising from AI. While some countries are considering legal recognition of AI-generated works, others insist that IP protection should remain grounded in human contribution. MyIPO believes the insights gathered from the National Dialogue will provide a strong foundation for Malaysia to develop IP policies that are forward-looking, progressive, and in step with global technological shifts—ultimately ensuring the nation remains competitive on the international stage.

Current IP laws may not be equipped to deal with rising use of AI in arts, says MyIPO
PETALING JAYA: With the rising usage of artificial intelligence (AI) in the arts, Malaysia's current intellectual property (IP) laws may be ill-equipped to deal with the potential legal challenges of these AI-generated works, says the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO). MyIPO deputy director-general (operations) Yusnieza Syarmila Yusoff said this was due to existing IP law being designed only for human artists which may result in possible gaps in future legal IP protection due to AI. 'The existing laws that govern trademarks, patents, copyrights, industrial designs and layout designs were enacted during a time when only human contribution was the foundation of creativity. 'However, the rapid development of AI has created gaps that need to be addressed, especially in identifying who should be recognized as the owner for AI-based works,' she said at a press conference after launching the National Dialogue on Intellectual Property (IP) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Monday (Aug 18). Other concerns Yusnieza raised included whether AI-generated creation should even be protected under copyright or patent law. She added that recognising AI-generated works could also affect the originality and distinctiveness of the art industry as creative works are produced at the click of a button. To help develop a solution to this issue, she said platforms like the National Dialogue on IP and AI were key to understanding the situation before considering any drastic changes in IP law. Key discussions of the dialogue will focus on the possible recognition of works fully generated by machines and the role of AI in creating patents and designs among other topics. The one-day dialogue hosted over 350 stakeholders and experts in the field of IP and AI which included government agencies, policymakers, legal practitioners, industry players, researchers and academics. 'MyIPO will use this dialogue to generate valuable input and forward-thinking perspectives to assist our ongoing efforts to strengthen our IP ecosystem in line with the realities of the digital age and AI. 'Malaysia must be ready to engage in the growing global discourse of AI-generated works and IP laws, and shape policies that are both progressive and aligned with our national priorities,' Yusnieza said.

Adding value with halal certification
KUALA LUMPUR: Halal certification in the food and beverage (F&B) sector adds significant value to businesses as Malaysia continues to attract growing numbers of foreign tourists, says Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali. He said the halal certification goes beyond religious requirements, as it also reflects evaluations of cleanliness, food safety and overall quality standards. 'We encourage industry players, especially those involved in food and beverage, to strive to obtain halal certification,' he told reporters at an event here yesterday. He said under the 13th Malaysia Plan, the government plans to establish a Halal Commission to strengthen the country's halal industry. 'To expedite the halal certification process, the Islamic Development Department, in collaboration with the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry, is working to reduce bureaucratic red tape as part of the government's efforts to enhance the ease of doing business in the country,' he said. As the lead ministry for the Buy Malaysian Campaign, Armizan also urged local industry players, including micro, small and medium enterprises, to adopt effective strategies and approaches to highlight the strengths and uniqueness of their products. 'The role of local industry is vital in showcasing distinctive brands and products to attract foreign tourists, especially in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign. 'As the ministry responsible for the distributive trade sector, including wholesale and retail services, as well as the F&B sub-sector, KPDN remains committed to driving healthy and progressive domestic trade,' he said, Bernama reported. Armizan noted that according to the Gross Domestic Product report released by Bank Negara on Friday, the distributive trade sector remains one of the key contributors to the services sector, recording steady growth in the second quarter of this year. 'The distributive trade sector, including wholesale and retail services as well as the F&B sub-sectors, recorded growth of 5.1% in the second quarter of 2025, compared with 5% in the first quarter. 'With this positive momentum, the ministry is optimistic that growth in the sector will continue, contributing to a stronger and more resilient economy,' he said.
