Pivotal Attack has Murphy dreaming big again

Irish Examiner29-07-2025
The Colm Quinn BMW Fillies' Maiden on Tuesday's card in Galway has been won by some high-class sorts and in Pivotal Attack, trained by Joe Murphy and ridden by Gary Carroll, this year's running has a winner with the potential to maintain the race's standing.
The Pinatubo filly may lack a bit of size but the same was said of stablemate Cercene and that lady gave their trainer the biggest success of his career when winning the Group 1 Coronation Stakes. Quite whether she can scale those heights will only be revealed in the fullness of time, but connections are not afraid to dream.
'Gary said she relaxed well and when he asked her to quicken, she did, so I think we have a very nice filly going forward,' said Murphy. 'You're always afraid of the O'Brien filly (runner-up Ameila Earhart). There was good word of her and she might have been a bit unlucky, touching the rails, but our one was very professional.
'The curve will be upwards. She's out of a Pivotal mare and we think she's stakes class.'
With the exception of connections, Sticktotheplan was not part of too many people's plans prior to the day's opener, the listed Colm Quinn BMW Novice Hurdle. A blanket could have been thrown over the seven runners as they raced into the dip before the turn for home, but the winner, trained by Cormac Farrell and ridden by Ricky Doyle, went the daring route, down the inside, and it gained reward as the 22-1 chance asserted late.
'We fancied him and had a few quid on him — we've always thought he was a very smart horse,' admitted Farrell. 'It's taken time for the penny to drop and to race correctly. His jumping has come together, and he has a huge future.
'I tried to sell him on several occasions, but nobody would buy him, so I'm delighted because I'll be properly paid for him at some stage! I'm a big fan of him. He's a very exciting horse. He's not really a summer type either, I was glad to see rain last night because today is as good as he wants it. He handles heavy ground and works like a very high-class horse.'
The Latin Quarter Beginners' Chase was next up, and it seems every punter wanted to take on morning favourite King Of Kingsfield. Though the class act of the race, he was without a win in some time and the market spoke against him to the extent that he was sent off a very easy-to-back 7-2.
He took time to warm to the task, but Jack Kennedy brought him to challenge My Great Mate in the straight and he raced away late on to win well.
'He had a couple of hard races last year, leading the mare (Brighterdaysahead) around, but I was delighted to see the ground as good as it was here today,' said winning trainer Gordon Elliott. 'He can jump fences, and we can have a bit of fun with him. I don't think he wants real winter heavy ground but there are plenty of nice races to be won with him.
Summer Snow, a five-year-old grey mare trained by Peter Lawlor, is in the form of her life, and when Rory Cleary produced her late to land the caulfieldindustrial.com Handicap, it was her third win in four starts since mid-May.
There's never a dull moment in Ballybrit and an eventful running of the Caulfield Industrial Handicap resulted in a dead-heat, with Sam Coen getting Ciaran Murphy's Castleheath up in the final stride to share the spoils with the Sean Byrne-trained and Shane Foley-ridden Helliogabalus.

William Haggas has smuggled a Group horse into a handicap and I suspect he will take all the beating at Goodwood

TACTICS can be everything in sport. But when you rely on tactics they can, of course, always go wrong. That was very much the case for Ballydoyle in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot last weekend. 1 Ryan Moore and Aidan O'Brien made a rare mistake and got it wrong in the King George - but they can rebound in style in the Nassau with Whirl Credit: Sportsfile Jan Brueghel and Continuous had a nightmare. But on Thursday at Glorious Goodwood surely it's simple what Ryan Moore should do in the feature Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes, live on ITV. Runner-up in the Oaks, and a horse that might have won that race on another day, WHIRL then made all to defeat King George runner-up Kalpana in the Group 1 Pretty Polly at the Curragh. This afternoon on paper the only pace pressure is Running Lion, and even if she decides to go on Whirl can sit second and is a much better horse getting 9lb! It all looks simple to me, even though the opposition includes the useful See the Fire (third in the Prince of Wales's to Ombudsman) and Coronation Stakes-winning roughie Cercene. Hopefully Whirl makes all the running, or nearly all! Day three of Glorious Goodwood on telly starts with a handicap for three-year-olds over 1m2f. William Haggas looks to have a live one here in HIGH DEGREE and I suspect he will take all the beating. Most read in Horse Racing Of course the big negative is the draw - there is not a single rider who would want stall 18. But Tom Marquand is class and I just hope he conjures up a passage for the son of Too Darn Hot who lost his maiden tag at Ffos Las last time in a tight finish. I suspect this could be a Group horse in a handicap. Up in class for the Group 2 Richmond Stakes over 6f next. AZIZAM was drawn miles away from winner and reposing Havana Hurricane in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot and he looked like the animal gagging for this extra furlong when finishing strongly in third. My hope has been off the track since then and lacks a bit of match practise but the odds are decent and he really should have strong eachway claims for Karl Burke and Sam James. The Group 3 Gordon Stakes is for three-year-olds over 1m4f. MERCHANT will be a banker for many after his Royal Ascot romp in the King George V Stakes. Haggas will be thinking he's got a right St Leger hope on his hands and I so no reason why he can't be another for Marquand. Remember he was drawn in stall 20 at Ascot and still won. The trainer won this with Desert Hero before he finished third in the Leger. Finally, a handicap for more three-year-olds over 5f. RUBY'S PROFIT has been dropped 1lb for a couple of defeats even though she ran crackers at both Epsom and Royal Ascot. Prior to those two efforts the Jamie Insole runner had scored well at this course and the draw is great in stall eight. Hopefully out, away and gone and very hard to kick out the frame at the very least. Come on Kieran Shoemark. Good luck! Determined Dunum delivers again at Galway

DUNUM SHOWED his liking for Galway once more with a tremendous front-running effort in the COLM QUINN BMW Mile Handicap. Not that sharpest away but quickly to the front nonetheless, in the hands of Seamie Heffernan, the Natalia Lupini-trained horse was pressed through the final furlong by Bear Profit. The 12-1 winner would not give way, however, as he made it three career wins at the Ballybrit festival. Lupini said: 'We couldn't dismiss Galway and have been working towards both this race and the Ahonoora on Sunday. He did well today, and Seamie is a great asset for a small yard like ours. Having a jockey of his calibre is a massive help. 'The horse usually jumps out smart, Seamie wasn't going to give away his position, and the horse enjoyed himself. He loves the downhill run into the dip, and he battled well towards the line. Advertisement 'We'll see how he is at home, but hopefully he'll also run in the Ahonoora.' Joe Murphy and Gary Carroll have a big day booked at Goodwood on Thursday and warmed up in style with a runaway success for Pivotal Attack in the COLM QUINN BMW Irish EBF Fillies Maiden. The trainer-jockey combination will team up with Royal Ascot heroine Cercene in the Nassau Stakes and were in the winner's enclosure courtesy of this 9-2 chance, who fairly sprinted by hot favourite Amelia Earhart when asked. Murphy said: 'Our filly was very professional, she relaxed, and when he asked her, she quickened. I think we have a nice filly going forward. 'I don't know where we'll go next, but the curve will be upwards anyway. I don't know the calibre of the race it was, and the O'Brien-horse (Amelia Earhart) was a bit unlucky, but it was the way our filly did it — she did it very well. 'She is out of a Pivotal mare and we think she is stakes class.' Cormac Farrell's Sticktotheplan was sent off the 22-1 outsider of the seven-runner COLM QUINN BMW Novice Hurdle, but shot through against the rail to win in good style. The Willie Mullins pair of Vicar Street and La Note Verte seemed sure to fight out the finish approaching the last, but the race changed drastically in complexion. Emily Love was challenging, as was Timeless Treaty, but it was Sticktotheplan and Ricky Doyle who quickened up best of all to win by two and a quarter lengths. 'We fancied him and had a few quid on as we've always thought he was a very smart horse. It has taken time for the penny to drop and to race correctly. His jumping has come together, and he has a huge future,' said Farrell. 'I tried to sell him on several occasions, but nobody would buy him, so I'm delighted, as I'll be properly paid for him at some stage! I'm a big fan, and he is a very exciting horse. He is a fine horse, and that ground is as good as he'd want. 'It is so exciting to be in Galway as we don't get many winners, so to have a nice horse to run in a Listed race is great.'
