Melaka inland port to boost rail logistics, support regional investment

MELAKA, July 21 — The Melaka Inland Port development in Taboh Naning, Alor Gajah, will provide investors streamlined facilities for the movement of goods via rail, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.
He said the 52.89-hectare logistics-focused development is intended to support investors in Melaka and the neighbouring states of Johor and Negeri Sembilan.
'MCORP signed an agreement with DS Rail Mobility Sdn Bhd on June 13, 2025, to develop the project, with a gross development cost of RM230.8 million for Phase 1. This forms part of the larger MCORP Hi-Tech Park development, which covers 2,023 hectares.
'The project planning began in November 2024, and the company is currently preparing the necessary documents for approvals, including planning permission from local authorities and impact assessment studies,' he said at the Melaka legislative assembly sitting in Seri Negeri today.
He was responding to a question from Datuk Zulkiflee Mohd Zin (BN-Taboh Naning), who had asked for updates on the inland port project.
Expanding on the matter, Ab Rauf said the project is being developed with a comprehensive environmental, social, and governance approach, encompassing green technology, low-carbon rail connectivity, community empowerment, and transparent governance, aligned with Melaka's sustainable development agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. He said this reflects a commitment to responsible development that prioritises local community wellbeing and environmental protection.
Ab Rauf also noted that the Works Ministry has approved a RM30 million road upgrade project from the Simpang Ampat toll roundabout to the Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin (AMJ) highway under Rolling Plan 3 of the 12th Malaysia Plan to support the inland port development.
The upgrade involves widening the road from a single to a dual carriageway, reinforcing slopes, constructing drainage systems, acquiring land, relocating utilities, and carrying out other related works.
'The project is in the final stages of detailed design, with land acquisition processes under Sections 4 and 8 expected to be submitted to the Melaka Department of the Director General of Lands and Mines in early August 2025.
'The tender advertisement is expected in mid-August 2025, with contractor appointment anticipated by December 2025,' he concluded. — Bernama

Johor Regent moots 25pc tax revenue return for state self-reliance

JOHOR BAHRU, July 23 – Johor would be able to achieve self-reliance if a quarter of tax revenue collected from the state is returned to it, Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim said. His Royal Highness said a 25 per cent tax return allow Johor to sustain itself without needing to rely on assistance from other parties. 'We would not need to burden the federal government or endure a long wait for approval through applications,' he said in a statement posted on his official Facebook page last night. Tunku Ismail's statement comes after recent incidents involving public facilities and development projects in the state. Among issues he highlighted was the delay in the opening of Hospital Pasir Gudang, which was supposed to begin operations in phases starting this August but has now been postponed to January next year. The 41-year-old crown prince also pointed to the recent disruption of the Immigration Department's autogate system at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex here and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) in Gelang Patah, in addition to other issues related to hospitals and flood mitigation projects. 'Following these shortcomings, I wish to convey to Johor residents how important it is for 25 per cent of the state's income tax revenue to be returned to Johor,' he said. This is not the first time His Royal Highness has made such a proposal. In December last year, Tunku Ismail requested that the federal government consider returning 20 to 30 per cent of the tax revenue collected from Johor. At the time, he noted that the Johor government contributes between RM48 billion and RM49 billion a year in tax revenue to Putrajaya.

A sweet hit in New Zealand

JOHOR BARU: Johor is looking to tap into New Zealand's growing interest in tropical fruits from Malaysia, especially the MD2 pineapple variety, as part of efforts to expand its agricultural exports. State agriculture, agro-based industry and rural development committee chairman Datuk Zahari Sarip said the opportunity arose during a recent working visit to the island nation with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said he was part of the Malaysian delegation where they met with New Zealand's Agriculture, Forestry, Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay at the New Zealand Parliament in Wellington. 'McClay expressed strong interest in Malaysia's halal industry and welcomed closer strategic ties not only in halal certification, but also to position Malaysia as a gateway to the Asean market, which has over 600 million people.' He said McClay was receptive about Malaysian agricultural produce, particularly tropical fruits like pineapples, and had opened the door for investment opportunities for Malaysian companies in New Zealand. Zahari said Ahmad Zahid had suggested that Johor take the lead in seizing the opportunity. 'I will hold discussions with entrepreneurs and relevant agencies to explore this potential further,' he said. Zahari said Johor has 10,558ha of pineapple plantations, producing 347,490 metric tonnes annually, with an estimated value of RM920mil. 'Despite this, our production is still unable to meet the increasing demand from Europe, the Middle East and other international markets,' he said. Zahari also said that during the trip there, he met with a Simpang Renggam-born entrepreneur who has been running a business in New Zealand for about 18 years. 'During the meeting, we discussed the potential for snack products from Johor to get into the New Zealand market.' He said a series of follow-up meetings would be held with government agencies under the Johor Agricultural Export Market Strengthening Committee to explore the opportunity in greater detail. Zahari also highlighted Johor's achievements in the agro-based industry (IAT) sector with the state recording 1,604 registered IAT entrepreneurs last year. 'Johor-based IAT entrepreneurs accounted for 27% of the national total under the Agriculture Department. 'That same year, our IAT sector recorded nearly RM348.2mil in sales, which contributed to 29% of Malaysia's total sales,' he said.

Kota Iskandar showdown brews as Amanah challenges Umno in Johor state polls

JOHOR BAHRU, July 22 — The Iskandar Puteri Umno division is prepared to take on Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) following the latter's intention to stake their claim on the Kota Iskandar state seat for the upcoming state election. Iskandar Puteri Umno information chief Datuk Abdul Aziz Sapian said the division is geared to contest against Amanah, irrespective of whether it's a straight fight or multiple cornered contest in Kota Iskandar. He said the Iskandar Puteri Umno division will not be intimidated by any political manoeuvring made by Amanah or their allies in Pakatan Harapan (PH). 'We are ready to face any form of challenge. 'If Amanah chooses to split votes among themselves, Umno sees this as evidence of PH's weakness in failing to manage internal issues. 'The people will judge who is sincerely looking after their interests and who is simply pursuing power,' he said in a statement today. Abdul Aziz was responding to an earlier statement by Iskandar Puteri Amanah division that laid claim on both Kota Iskandar and Skudai for PH. The former two-term Nusajaya assemblyman (prior to renaming to Kota Iskandar in 2018), said Umno respects the right of any political party to contest and determine their candidate in any seat. However, he explained that Umno determines its candidates and strategies based on the people's priorities, the strength of its grassroots and the need to ensure political stability for the continued development of Johor. 'For Umno, all negotiations and decisions on seat distribution are the prerogative of the party and coalition's highest leadership,' he said, adding that the final decision is not based on the wishes of Umno members at divisional levels. Abdul Aziz said Umno remains committed to strengthening Johor's political stability, especially in the strategic area of Kota Iskandar where where continued development and public well-being are priorities. 'As the Barisan Nasional (BN) elected representative, represented by Umno, in Kota Iskandar, we will continue to serve until the term ends without being distracted by Amanah's political rhetoric. 'Rest assured that the Iskandar Puteri Umno division will continue to ensure that the area remains under a credible and stable leadership that serves the people, and not just a slogan,' he said. Earlier, the Iskandar Puteri Amanah division declared it is prepared for PH to contest solo in Skudai and Kota Iskandar, setting up a possible clash with BN that is incumbent in the latter seat. Its division chief Dzulkefly Ahmad said PH's official decision to contest in both of the state constituencies under the Iskandar Puteri federal seat was the result of the party division's annual general meeting on Sunday. Dzulkefly, who is also Johor Amanah deputy chairman, said the party is prepared for any outcome, including a three-cornered contest, if necessary, by bringing the people's agenda of unity, institutional reform and sustainable development. Kota Iskandar is a highly coveted seat as it is also the location for Johor's administrative capital with the same name. The state constituency was helmed by PH under Amanah after the watershed 2018 general elections. However, PH lost the seat to BN in the 2022 state election, where Umno maintains a strong presence. Skudai has traditionally been under PH and is a known DAP stronghold since 2008. Both state constituencies make up the Iskandar Puteri federal constituency.
