Rodrygo's sly comment at Mo Salah could backfire as Liverpool interested in £80m star

Daily Mirror2 days ago
With Liverpool reportedly holding an interest in Real Madrid star Rodrygo, the Brazilian's previous comments about Mohamed Salah could cause uproar in the Liverpool dressing room
Rodrygo's past digs at Mohamed Salah may not be received well by the Liverpool dressing room should the Reds clinch a move for the Real Madrid star. The Brazilian is reportedly subject to interest from the Premier League champions and Arsenal after a season where his involvement on the pitch declined due to the arrival of Kylian Mbappe.

With the Spanish giants said to have placed a price tag of £86million on the winger, speculation surrounding his future is strife. He's been touted as a potential replacement for Luis Diaz at Anfield with the Colombian who is eager for a new challenge, as Bayern Munich are keen to sign the 28-year-old.

While the Brazilian would certainly prove to be an impressive addition for Arne Slot - who acquired Hugo Ekitike on Wednesday - amends may need to be made if a deal comes to fruition after he previously took aim at Salah in an interview.

It was in 2018 when the Egyptian superstar was left devastated after being forced off after 30 minutes in the Champions League final against Madrid when suffering an shoulder injury via a foul from Sergio Ramos.
Madrid went on to win the match 3-1 and four years later, the two clubs met again in the European final. Salah took to social media after the Spanish side knocked out Manchester City in the semi-finals as he wrote on X: "We have a score to settle."
Salah doubled down on his need for vengeance after he was named the FWA Footballer of the Year award, where he added: "Yeah, I think it's revenge time." Despite his motivations, Liverpool came up short once again, narrowly losing 1-0 with Vinicius Jr scoring the only goal in the game.
Rodrygo - who came on in the 93rd minute of the match - didn't take too kindly to Salah's talk of revenge before their clash. He enjoyed the last laugh after discussing his team-mates' desire to make fun of the Liverpool winger in a podcast.
Speaking on Podpah's YouTube channel, he said: "When a guy provokes, sometimes you just want to win so you can make fun of them. In training we used to say 'come Salah, come Salah'… in our head it was already 'we have to win to then make fun of Salah'."

Given the close-knit bond that exists within the Liverpool squad, it remains to be seen whether Rodrygo's comments could create tension if a move to Anfield materialises this summer.
While the Brazilian's importance at Madrid dwindled slightly last season under Carlo Ancelotti, Jude Bellingham made sure to give the winger his flowers earlier this year by showering praise on him.
Speaking to CBS Sports earlier this year, the England midfielder said: "Rodrygo is so underrated. For me, he's probably the most talented and most gifted player in the squad. The things he can do with the football. We'll be messing around, and he'll flick the ball up somehow, and you're thinking, 'How'd he do that?' I'm twisting my ankles if I try that."

Benjamin Sesko has already explained why he snubbed move to Man Utd

Manchester United are interested in signing RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, but the Slovenian has already explained why he rejected the Red Devils in the past A move for Benjamin Sesko to Manchester United appears unlikely - at least if the striker's past comments are anything to go by. United have been searching for a new centre forward all summer, but have so far failed to secure a suitable signing. ‌ They missed out on Liam Delap to Chelsea, Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal and Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool, while efforts to land Victor Osimhen and Ollie Watkins have also come up short. As a result, they've turned their attention to Sesko - who was previously in talks to join Arsenal before negotiations stalled and the Gunners pivoted to Gyokeres instead. ‌ RB Leipzig are believed to have lowered their asking price for Sesko, with the Slovenian striker now available for around £60million, according to BILD. However, any hopes United have of securing his signature may depend on whether Sesko has softened his stance on the club. ‌ United made an approach for him in 2023 following his breakout season at Red Bull Salzburg, where he netted 18 goals in all competitions and attracted interest from several top European sides. In the end, Sesko opted for a move to Leipzig - and later hinted that United's style of play had been a key factor in his decision to turn down a switch to Old Trafford. "The thing is, I wasn't really involved in these kinds of conversations [about which club I would sign for]. But I think it was better to come [to RB Leipzig]," he admitted in 2024. "It was very important for me to go to a place that plays a similar style of football. I already knew what I had to do and didn't have to go through a whole learning process again." After missing out on Sesko, the Red Devils turned to another highly rated but similarly unproven talent in Rasmus Hojlund, spending £72m on the young Dane. Two years on, however, the career trajectories of the two strikers have diverged significantly. Sesko has gone from strength to strength, scoring 18 and then 21 goals in successive seasons for RB Leipzig. Hojlund, on the other hand, has struggled to find his footing. ‌ After being thrown into a faltering United side, he has battled inconsistency and a lack of goals, and now appears likely to leave the club with his reputation diminished. Hojlund's struggles suggest Sesko was right to pick Leipzig - a club where he could hone his skills and develop without the weight of expectation that comes with leading the line for a Premier League colossal like United. Ironically, two years later, Sesko may yet make the move he once rejected. United's head of scouting, Christopher Vivell, is a known admirer and has personally watched the Slovenian striker in action. The 22-year-old could become the focal point of United's new-look front line, joining recent arrivals Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to form a revamped attacking trio. The club have already splashed £133m this summer, and signing Sesko would take their total outlay close to £200m. ‌ But with Marcus Rashford being shipped off to Barcelona and Hojlund heavily linked with an exit, reinforcements up front aren't just a priority - they're a necessity. Sesko is not agitating for a move, and with his contract running until 2029, Leipzig are under no immediate pressure to sell. However, it's understood that if their £60m valuation is met, they would be open to letting him speak with interested clubs. The fee could represent a relative bargain in today's market, but United had the chance to sign him for a fraction of that price just a few years ago. Back in 2021, then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recommended the club move for the then-18-year-old, who was available for just £2.5m. United declined, viewing the deal as too risky.

Wrexham headed Down Under to prepare for Championship season

After spending two summers touring the United States as part of their preparations, the Reds have spent this year in Australia and New Zealand. Matches against Melbourne Victory, Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix have helped Wrexham for their first season in the second tier in over four decades. Boss Parkinson told the club's YouTube channel: "The tour's been amazing, it really has. The experience we've had, I don't think anyone who's on the tour will ever forget. "Obviously, Melbourne was, you know, a great experience for us. The first few days, obviously, everyone's recovering from the jet-lag! "But training was good there, despite that. The game was decent. "Obviously, we had a bit of free time and then, obviously, Sydney, you know, really blew everybody away being in the city and, again, the welcome we had there, like Melbourne, was extraordinary. "Over to New Zealand and we've come to this facility, which is used by the All Blacks, and what an honour that is to be using the same pitches and the gym as (such) a prestigious team as the All Blacks. "The pitches are really quality. The gym facilities and everything, and these surroundings, has been outstanding for us. The sun's been shining as well, which we didn't expect here at Wellington. So, yeah, that part of it has been great." Wrexham opened their tour with a comfortable 3-0 triumph over Melbourne Victory, confirmed by goals from Tom O'Connor, Ryan Hardie and George Evans. Despite taking the lead via an own goal, the Reds lost out 2-1 to Sydney and it was Wellington who prevailed 1-0 in the final friendly of the tour. These matches will work towards getting Wrexham ready for their Championship season, which begins with the trip to Southampton, relegated from the Premier League, on Saturday, August 9.

Newcastle have not held contract talks with Alexander Isak

Eddie Howe has revealed no contract talks have been held with Alexander Isak but hopes to keep the striker at Newcastle. Isak has been at the centre of transfer speculation over the summer window and it was reported earlier in the week that he has asked to explore a move away. The 25-year-old did not travel with the Magpies for their pre-season tour of Asia, with the club stating that he missed out due to a 'minor thigh injury'. Hours later, reports emerged that Isak – who has been linked with a move to Liverpool in recent weeks – had told club executives he wanted to explore the possibility of a transfer away from St James' Park. Isak missed Newcastle's first pre-season fixture against Celtic last weekend and ahead of their friendly against Arsenal on Sunday, Howe provided an update on the striker's situation. 'Of course there's things going on behind the scenes. He will be aware he's in the news every day, and I'm sure that's not easy for anyone in that situation,' the Newcastle boss told reporters. 'Conversations that happen between Alex and the club or Alex and myself will stay private for obvious reasons. We do share a really good relationship with him. 'He's been magnificent for us since he's joined. He's very popular in the dressing room and we'd love him to continue his journey at Newcastle.' Howe also added that there are no contract talks taking place with Isak, who has three years left on his existing deal. 'As far as I'm aware, I don't think there are any contract talks taking place at the moment. That'll be for a later date potentially,' said Howe, as reported by the Daily Mail and the Athletic. 'I think for now, with the situation as it is and the state of the window, in the sense that it's hurtling towards the end of the window very quickly from our perspective, there's still so much that could happen.' Howe confirmed that Isak is currently in Newcastle being assessed, adding at a press conference reported on the club website: 'With his injury, I've got no major update on that. He first mentioned his thigh just before the Celtic game and we assumed it would a be very minimal injury, nothing too serious. 'Then on the Monday after the Celtic game, he went in from training very early, didn't feel right, so he's now in Newcastle getting that injury assessed. 'Hopefully he'll be back soon playing in the black and white shirt. That's what we all want to see.' Isak joined Newcastle in August 2022 and has continued to flourish during his time on Tyneside. Last year's campaign saw the Sweden forward fire 27 goals for the Magpies as they lifted the Carabao Cup and secured Champions League football with a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League.
