Africa's basketball revolution captured in new docuseries

The documentary series Origin: The Story of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) is set to make its world premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
The Festival will take place on 8 September 2025.
This significant event marks a major milestone in chronicling the rise of a basketball league that has transformed the sports landscape across Africa.
Co-directed by Tebogo Malope and co-produced by Akin Omotoso, Origin captures the journey of the BAL. BAL is the NBA's first collaboration to operate a league outside North America.
The series follows the league's inaugural season and playoff tournament, featuring 12 top club teams from the continent.
The BAL is the brainchild of visionaries Amadou Gallo Fall, the league's president, and Masai Ujiri, the co-founder of Giants of Africa and a former executive of the Toronto Raptors.
Together, they realised a decades-long ambition to establish elite basketball competition across Africa.
'For Africa, this league is more than sport, it's a symbol of belief and resilience,' Ujiri stated. 'It elevates African talent to the global stage. I'm proud this journey will reach the world through this series.'
His words will deeply resonate with South African audiences, who have watched the league's growth firsthand in Pretoria and beyond.
The BAL's fifth season playoffs and finals were held at SunBet Arena in Pretoria in June 2025. It drew in notable South African media figures, artists, and former NBA stars such as Tracy McGrady.
The guests illustrated the league's growing prestige and the significance of basketball as a unifier across African cultures and communities.
Amadou Gallo Fall described the BAL as 'the culmination of decades of work' between the NBA and FIBA. Their goal is to provide African players with a clear pathway to develop their talent.
'We are grateful to the filmmakers for documenting the league's historic impact on lives and economies across the continent,' he said.
The documentary not only highlights the league's sporting achievements but also explores its wider socio-economic influence.
It touches on how basketball is building bridges between Africa and North America, fostering two-way opportunities for players and entrepreneurs alike.
The series also features exclusive interviews with key figures such as former US President Barack Obama, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
NBA champion Pascal Siakam from Cameroon and South African-linked Grammy-winning artist and BAL player J. Cole will also make appearances.
Richard Brown, the documentary's executive producer and co-director, expressed pride in telling stories that transcend basketball.
'From Dakar to Kigali and Lagos to Cairo, the BAL reflects the hopes of a dynamic generation of young Africans. It symbolises the continent's limitless potential.'
For South Africa, a country with a rich sporting heritage and vibrant basketball culture, Origin promises to be a powerful testament to the continent's new sporting era.
Origin: The Story of the Basketball Africa League presents a vivid, compelling portrait of African basketball's rise.
It honours the passion and perseverance that built the BAL and positions South Africa as a key stage in its extraordinary journey.

Jamie Lee Curtis defends 'Freakier Friday' after scathing review

Jamie Lee Curtis has spoken out against the harsh review of Freakier Friday , the sequel to the 2003 hit Freaky Friday. The film, starring Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reprising their roles, has been mostly well-received. It holds a 73% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an even stronger 94% audience score. However, Time magazine's review was sharply critical, calling the film a 'cash-grab' with 'ugly costumes' and 'humiliating scenarios', according to Screen Rant. Curtis responded on Instagram, calling the review 'a tad harsh' and adding, 'SOME people LOVE it. I'm one.' Her reaction shows her strong support for the film and the hard work behind it, despite mixed criticism. Freakier Friday continues the story more than two decades later. Anna, now a mother and soon-to-be stepmother, experiences a complicated family adventure through a four-way body swap. The film balances comedy with heartfelt moments, appealing to both fans of the original and new viewers. Fans might appreciate that the film has had a strong global opening, making about $45 million (roughly R 900 million), matching its production budget. This suggests it resonates well with families seeking fun, relatable entertainment. Jamie Lee Curtis summed it up well: 'Nobody sets out to make a bad movie. Even films that don't work involve a huge amount of hard work. While the review stings, it shouldn't overshadow the positive response.' Her words remind us that film enjoyment is subjective and that the overall warm reception outweighs the negative voices. For those wanting a light-hearted, nostalgic comedy, Freakier Friday is a charming return to a beloved franchise. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Mia marks Miss SA'crowniversary' - will she be the longest-reigning queen?

Mia Le Roux is celebrating her first anniversary of being crowned Miss South Africa, or Miss SA. The model became the pageant's first hearing-impaired winner in the history of the competition. With new organisers on board, a date has yet to be set for the handover to Mia's successor. Could she be the longest-reigning queen? On Sunday, 10 August – a day after the country celebrated Women's Day – Miss SA organisers marked the first anniversary of Mia Le Roux's reign. 'Happy crowniversary!' the official social media account posted. In her first Instagram post since being crowned, Mia shared: 'What an unbelievable feeling. I have so much gratitude in my heart for each one of you who has supported me and rallied behind me ❤️ The differently-abled Miss SA continued: 'We created a new generation of believers. Every little girl out there who has felt different because they are not what society expects them to be will realise they are so wildly capable, just like I am'. With the Miss SA pageant indefinitely postponed, Mia Le Roux is expected to serve beyond her year of reign and official duties. The title of the longest-reigning winner belongs to Marilyn Ramos, who served almost 16 months in her position. Marilyn was crowned in December 2012, crowning her successor, Rolene Strauss, on 30 March 2024.
