'It is creating terrorists': Kick Streamer Dan Saltman Links DC Museum Shooter to Twitch

Following a fatal shooting near the Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., outspoken Kick streamer Dan "dancantstream" Saltman has fueled controversy by going public with charges that Twitch encouraged a culture that, he says, helped radicalize the shooter.
Deadly Assault and Platform Backlash
The attack in question took place on the evening of May 21, when two employees of the Israeli Embassy and a couple were shot and killed near the Jewish Museum. The suspect, now in jail and accused of murder, was said to have screamed "Free Palestine" while being arrested.
As news broke, Saltman took to X (formerly Twitter), directly tagging Twitch CEO Dan Clancy and alleging that the shooter had previously been an active user on the streaming platform. Saltman stated:'I can confirm he was a @twitch user. Hey @djclancy999 do you think his favorite channel was the same as yours?'
A Broader Battle: Saltman vs. Twitch
Saltman, a habitual Twitch critic and vocal defender of alternative platforms such as Kick, employed the tragedy to support an existing assertion: Twitch encourages extremism.
This was in accordance with a highly contentious letter written earlier this year by Congressman Ritchie Torres, who had criticized Twitch streamer Hasan "HasanAbi" Piker and CEO Dan Clancy for promoting anti-Semitic content. Torres stated that HasanAbi was now the "anti-Semitic voice of a systemically anti-Semitic platform," referencing inciting past commentary from the streamer.
Saltman, siding with Torres' opinion, supported this position in a second post:" It is creating terrorists."

Adding fuel to the fire of controversy, Saltman referenced an archived Twitch account he said was owned by the suspect, stating the user had seemingly employed an iteration of their actual name before switching. Although there is no confirmation by the authorities about the suspect's Twitch presence, Saltman's charges hint at increasing discomfort with the power of online communities to affect offline behavior.
As the case develops, Twitch has so far made no formal statement. In the meanwhile, the world of streaming is polarized, with Saltman's remarks eliciting support from right-wing pundits as well as outrage from those who see his comments as opportunistic and inflammatory.
The case highlights a larger cultural conflict in the online media space, one in which influence, ideology, and responsibility increasingly meet in explosive and sometimes deadly manners.

Israeli military recovers bodies of two hostages taken by Hamas
The Israeli military has found the bodies of two hostages who were being held by Hamas, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday, reported Reuters. According to Israeli forces, bodies were recovered during a special mission in Khan Younis, a city located in the southern Gaza Strip. 'Following the recovery of two bodies, 56 hostages are still held by Hamas, with fewer than half believed to be alive,' the Israeli army said, based on their latest estimates. Netanyahu added that the victims were identified as Judi Weinstein-Haggai and her husband, Gad Haggai. The war between Israel and Hamas began after a deadly attack on October 7, 2023. On that day, gunmen led by Hamas killed 1,200 people in Israel and took 251 others as hostages, according to Israeli figures. Since then, the fighting has led to heavy losses. Health officials in Gaza say more than 54,000 Palestinians have been killed during the conflict.

Special court closes Powai land case against Niranjan Hiranandani, others
MUMBAI : A special court Monday closed criminal proceedings against developer Niranjan Hiranandani and others in the alleged Rs 30,000 crore Powai Area Development Scheme (PADS) land scam case. The judge observed that prosecuting the accused would not be in keeping with justice and that there was no prima facie case after the state Anti-Corruption Bureau submitted a closure report saying there was no evidence of corruption, monetary gratification, dishonest intention, or criminal conspiracy. The case relates to allegations that prime public land leased at concessional rates for affordable housing was diverted to construct luxury real estate and commercial premises by private developers, notably Niranjan Hiranandani, managing director of the Hiranandani group . "Having perused the closure report, I find that no material or anything incriminating, which could connect the accused…with the alleged crime has been found…in my opinion it would thus, be futile to unnecessarily prosecute the accused.., sans any material against them," special judge Shashikant Eknathrao Bangar said in a 119-page order made available on Tuesday. The judge said the closure reports are based on cogent investigation, verified compliance, and supported by judicial orders of the Bombay high court. Pointing to the HC's orders in three related PILs alleging breach of agreement with govt and misuse of FSI and development rights, the judge said allegations concerning breach of affordable housing obligations, amalgamation of flats, and sale of flats were conclusively examined and remedied. The judge noted that the high court had constituted a three-member joint committee to verify compliance and accepted reports in 2016 and 2017, which confirmed that out of 2,200 flats of 80 sqm, 1,337 were constructed, 12 locked, and 887 remained to be completed as per the plan and timeline. "The directions for completion of the remaining flats were passed with monitoring provisions. Any further breach or non-compliance was made subject to the court's ongoing supervision, obviating the need for separate criminal proceedings…the ACB rightly concluded that no prosecutable offence remained. There was no material to show abuse of public office or conspiracy," the judge said, adding that the probe was a 'fair' one. The ACB, through public prosecutor Ramesh Siroya, submitted before the court that sale of larger flats and amalgamation, though deviating from the spirit of the Agreement, was retrospectively regularised through the high court hearing the PILs. The agreement dated 19 Nov 1986, was executed between the state, MMRDA, and the developer for an area of 232 acres. Based on activist Santosh Daundkar's plea alleging that Hiranandani and others were involved in irregularities in the housing project, a court in 2012 ordered a probe. The ACB filed an FIR against Hiranandani and senior urban development department officer Thomas Benjamin and others under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the IPC. In 2013, the ACB sought to close the case on the grounds that there wasn't sufficient evidence. Daundkar opposed the move. The ACB's closure report, which was rejected by the court on Jan 4 2018, led to a directive for further investigations. Following this, a second closure report was submitted on Aug 30, 2019. Daundkar challenged this report too and sought a reinvestigation. He alleged malafide transfer of the investigating officer, who was purportedly preparing to file a chargesheet against top officials and the builder. Daundkar argued that the final report was a result of administrative interference and suppression of crucial material. He contended that the final report is based heavily on the HC's civil PIL orders and ignores criminal aspects. He sought a fresh probe by an independent agency. The ACB said the allegations were not supported by documentary evidence or witness statements. "There are around 8,000 residents (approx) residing in PADS. None of the residents have filed any criminal complaints over the years pertaining to the development carried out in PADS," it submitted. It also pointed out that Daundkar had neither purchased any commercial premises nor was a resident or investor in the development. The judge rejected Daundkar's plea against the closure report, saying it reiterated allegations already considered in PILs and brought no new substantive material.

As Greta Thunberg Sails To Gaza, Israel's "We Are Prepared" Message
New Delhi: As Greta Thunberg sails toward Gaza with a boat full of humanitarian aid, Israel has declared it is "prepared" to act to prevent the flotilla's arrival, according to a senior military spokesperson. "For this case as well, we are prepared," Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesman Brig General Effie Defrin told The Times of London. "We have gained experience in recent years, and we will act accordingly." He did not specify what actions the Israeli military might take. The 22-year-old Swedish climate activist set sail on Sunday aboard the Madleen, a vessel operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), carrying essential supplies for civilians in Gaza. The strip has faced a total blockade by Israel for over 90 days and has been under land, sea, and air restrictions since 2007. The aid aboard includes milk, protein bars, baby formula, diapers, flour, rice, water filters, hygiene products, and medical equipment. The current voyage includes 12 international activists, including Ms Thunberg and Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham. The group said the mission was a "non-violent, direct action to challenge Israel's illegal siege and escalating war crimes." While en route from Catania in southern Italy, the activists reported being followed by drones, believed to be operated by the Greek Coast Guard, and have called on the international community to ensure their safety. Greta Thunberg has been actively sharing footage from the trip, including images of herself wrapped in a keffiyeh, holding a Palestinian flag, and swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. "We are doing this because no matter what odds we are against, we have to keep trying because the moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity," Ms Thunberg said, breaking into tears during her speech before departure. Earlier, another vessel affiliated with the FFC was reportedly damaged shortly before arriving in Malta to pick up Ms Thunberg for a similar mission. The group accused Israel of targeting that ship with drones.
