KUCHING (April 23): Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has taken a significant step towards enhancing cardiovascular emergency preparedness by installing automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at key locations throughout the municipality.
Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the AEDs strengthen the city's resilience by ensuring timely assistance during sudden cardiac emergencies.
'MBKS is the first council to install these AEDs and we are looking at installing more at Kenyalang Traffic Garden and Hui Sing Garden, and eventually requiring shopping complexes and areas under our jurisdiction to do the same,' he told reporters after launching the AED at Stutong Community Market here today.
Four other AEDs have or will be strategically placed at Taman Sahabat, Kenyalang Park Market, MBKS Building, and MBKS Indoor Stadium in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Kuching Central and Rotary Club of Singapore East.
Wee stressed that educating and training the public on the proper use of the life-saving devices are key.
'We need to raise awareness among the people and we will continue to educate them,' he said.
In his speech, Wee thanked the clubs for their generous sponsorship under the 'Heart Safe City' initiative.
'Your commitment to community well-being and public health through this corporate social responsibility project is truly commendable.
'Your actions exemplify the spirit of service above self and today's event is a shining testament to the good that happens when communities come together for a noble cause,' he said.
He pointed out that having AEDs readily accessible in high-traffic areas could make the difference between life and death during emergencies.
Among those present were Kuching South Deputy Mayor Datuk Zaiedi Suhaili, MBKS secretary Ita Ling, and event organising chairperson Delia Hoan. Automated External Defibrillators Kuching South lead wee hong seng
