Turkiye's Erdogan declares population crisis, blames LGBT ‘fascism and oppression' for falling birthrate

Malay Mail24-05-2025
ISTANBUL, May 24 — In a bid to tackle Turkey's falling birthrate, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on yesterday announced the 'decade of the family', and again lashed out at the LGBT community as 'deviant'.
'The period between 2026 and 2035 has been identified as the decade of family and population,' said Erdogan in opening the International Family Forum in Istanbul.
'Our country is facing a great danger: Turkey's birthrate for the first time in our history dropped to 1.48' children per woman, he said, citing figures from the Turkish statistical institute (TUIK).
'This is a disaster, this figure is way below the critical threshold of 2.1,' he said.
'What we are facing right now is not only a statistic, but a warning pushing us to act. That's why in recent years, we have taken important steps to encourage... all families to have at least three children.'
Back in 2001, Turkish women had an average of 2.38 children, TUIK statistics show.
It is not the first time Erdogan — a pious Muslim and father of four — has raised the alarm over Turkey's declining population, warning last month it was 'a threat much more significant than war'.
In January, he declared 2025 would be the 'year of the family'.
He also used his speech to lash out at the LGBT community, which had been a repeated target of his 2023 election campaign.
'This deviant movement, called LGBT... has turned into a (form of) fascism and oppression which rejects any other different ideology,' he said, saying opposing the LGBT agenda was 'fighting for human dignity and honour'.
He also warned against moves to blur the distinction between traditional genders.
'Although some opposition parties and some women organisations advocate this deviant movement, degendering projects threaten our national security,' he said, vowing his government would 'fight against them with great commitment'. — AFP

Sabah launches eKahwin system to streamline Muslim marriage applications

Demonstration of the e-Perkahwinan portal. – Information Department photo KOTA KINABALU (Aug 15): The state government, through the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAINS), has launched the eKahwin system to simplify the marriage application process for Muslim couples in Sabah. Sabah Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Datuk Mohd Arifin Arif, stated that since the implementation of the eKahwin system on August 1, 1,782 prospective couples have registered as users within one week. 'The eKahwin system demonstrates how JHEAINS leverages technology to serve the community without compromising Shariah law, administrative integrity, or human values,' he said. 'Applicants no longer need to queue or take time off work just to submit documents. Everything can be done at their fingertips, except for special cases requiring further scrutiny such as determining the wali (marriage guardian), verifying lineage status, or validating identification documents,' he announced at the launch ceremony of the eKahwin System and FPX Payment Platform today. He added that integrating the FPX platform enables fast, secure and transparent online payment of service fees while reducing cash transaction risks and delays. 'This system ensures marriage procedures are more organized, systematic and accountable. After the marriage solemnization is registered, couples will receive a valid digital marriage certificate before the physical copy is issued. Its authenticity can be verified via the e-Validator app,' he explained. 'The launch of eKahwin and FPX is just the beginning of digitizing Islamic services in Sabah. We must continue innovating, strengthening data security, addressing shortcomings and listening to public feedback. Our vision is clear: to position Sabah as a leading state in digital transformation for Islamic marriage management.' Meanwhile, JHEAINS director Datuk Jumain Abdul Ghani shared that Thalassemia screening — a mandatory requirement for marriage applications — is still under the department's review and planning. Also present were Sabah Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin and Sabah Baitulmal Corporation chairman Datuk Dr Omar Raisul Assalam Syah Sulaiman Omar.

Dozens of opposition figures arrested in Turkey

Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was arrested in March and subsequently imprisoned. (EPA Images pic) ISTANBUL : Turkish police arrested 40 people today in the opposition stronghold of Istanbul, including the mayor of the central district of Beyoglu and several of his close advisers, Turkish media reported. The latest wave of arrests over 'corruption' allegations is part of a months-long crackdown targeting the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP). Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, considered the biggest political rival to president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was arrested in March and subsequently imprisoned. His arrest sparked unprecedented protests in the country not seen in more than a decade. In addition to Imamoglu, nine of Istanbul's 26 CHP district mayors have been arrested and imprisoned since October, most of them on corruption charges, accusations they deny. According to analysts, the government is attempting to undermine the CHP, which emerged as the clear winner in local elections in the spring of 2024 at the expense of Erdogan's Justice and Development Party.

Easier Haj leave for civil servants after service confirmation rule removed

PUTRAJAYA: The Public Service Department (PSD) has removed the confirmation-in-service requirement for civil servants to qualify for Haj leave. This change aims to help Muslim civil servants fulfil their religious obligations without unnecessary delays. PSD director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz said the move benefits those who registered early for Haj. 'Previously, only confirmed civil servants were eligible for Haj leave,' he said. Many receive Haj offers just three or four years after joining the service, he added. Long waiting periods for Haj slots, sometimes up to 30 or 40 years, made the old rule unfair, he explained. Wan Ahmad spoke after attending the 20th Majlis Amanat Perdana Perkhidmatan Awam (MAPPA XX) programme. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the policy change alongside other civil service improvements. These include upgrades to the Malaysian Armed Forces scheme and Academic Recognition Awards (HPA). Funding for the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN) was also increased. Wan Ahmad said the new Public Service Talent Development Policy ensures civil servants stay competitive. 'We need competent human capital from recruitment to retirement,' he said. The policy focuses on training and career growth across all service schemes. Previously, career progression varied by scheme, but now a unified blueprint guides talent development. A PSD statement said the policy keeps the public sector relevant and reform-driven. The changes address modern challenges like digitalisation and artificial intelligence. - Bernama
