Brendan Rodgers tells Rangers boss Russell Martin that Celtic welcome the chase as 2 'big deals' can bury rivals
The Hoops boss is keepings tabs on the rest of the Premiership but he insisted his side set their own standards
Brendan Rodgers insists Celtic welcome the chase as the Hoops boss gears up to take on new-look Rangers under Russell Martin.
The Irishman is set to ramp up preparations for the new term with several transfer targets in the pipeline.
Kieran Tierney is already on board, Callum Osmand is set to land from Fulham and Swedish ace Benjamin Nygren is expected to be rubber stamped early next week.
Rodgers is also trailing Royal Antwerp wide man Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Japanese defender Hayato Inamura – with interest in several others – as he looks to tool up for the coming campaign.
The Hoops gaffer insisted Celtic set their own standards – and he's thrilled at the prospect of a tougher challenge from Rangers and the rest of the Premiership.
Rodgers told Sky Sports: 'We create our own benchmark and our own levels and we've been doing that consistently now, but there's no doubt competition makes you better in whatever sport it is or whatever pursuit of anything that you're trying to achieve.
'If you have competition, that really narrows in the focus.
'We always have to keep an eye on our rivals in terms of what they do and players that they might bring in and systems they play and tactics they use and managers.
'But competition is always healthy for you and for me it's what really drives me up here.
'Ultimately for me it's about making Celtic the best that we possibly can be and using all the resources that I possibly can to help make us the best that we can and keep delivering the football that the supporters want.'
Celtic's summer shopping is set to gather pace but Hoops legend Chris Sutton has urged his former clubs to get a shift on.
The champions will unfurl the league flag at home to St Mirren on Sunday, August 3 – abut face a Champions League play-off three weeks later and just days before the first Old Firm showdown of the season.
Record Sport columnist Sutton – who has urged Celts not to sell Nicolas Kuhn in this window – said: "I'm a little bit concerned Celtic don't have more players in. When a team is as strong as they have been, it's important they add to the squad and freshen things up,"
"I'm sure there will be a couple more moves in the pipeline and players brought in.
"I'd always like to see them strengthen early. Then you can bed players in, there's Champions League qualifiers for Rangers and Celtic which have such an impact on their seasons financially.
"As much as Celtic have been dominant, and won a double last season, the pressure is on right from the off.
"I think Kieran Tierney coming back is massive. He's gone back to Celtic, arguably sort of in his peak, albeit didn't play enough football at Arsenal.
"Replacing him Greg Taylor looks like to be a pretty big deal because he was an outstanding player for Celtic.
"Keeping hold of Cameron Carter-Vickers is a big deal for Celtic as well.
"It's so important to strengthen when you're on top and go again and Celtic should be trying to absolutely bury Rangers in the transfer market this season.'

Timeline set for next 2 Liverpool transfers after completing Florian Wirtz deal
Florian Wirtz will not be Liverpool's final piece of transfer business with two more deals set to quickly be completed at Anfield as Arne Slot forms his squad for next season Liverpool have made the biggest splash of the summer transfer window so far with the confirmation of Florian Wirtz's arrival at Anfield. The transfer could see a British record fee paid with the package coming to £116million with add-ons included. Wirtz already has some lofty targets to complete with his team-mates. 'I would like to win everything every year! First of all, we have to do our work, I have to make my work," he said. 'In the end, we want to be successful. Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious.' With such ambition, it's no wonder the Reds have not been put off spending more in the coming days and weeks. Arne Slot has already seen the arrival of Jeremie Frimpong at Anfield, and ex-Bayer Leverkusen team-mate Wirtz sees a significant increase in spending after completing his medical on Friday. But more business is set to be conducted in the coming days as Liverpool look to equip themselves with the ability to retain the Premier League title. Two deals could soon be completed: one in and one out. Milos Kerkez is expected to travel to Merseyside on Tuesday to undergo his medical after Liverpool agreed a £40m fee with Bournemouth. The full-back is set to come in and provide strong competition to Andy Robertson. Personal terms are already agreed for Dominik Szoboszlai's Hungary team-mate as the Premier League champions move to get another deal over the line. Kerkez's arrival could see Robertson mull a possible move to Atletico Madrid however. Wirtz's arrival may not have been Liverpool's final dealing with Bayer Leverkusen this summer either. Defender Jarell Quansah is closing in on a £35m move to the Bundesliga side. Reports suggest the transfer could be agreed in 24-48 hours with the former Bristol Rovers loanee having already offered his approval. Negotiations area already noted to be at their final stages. An exit for the young defender in the coming days could see the Reds move for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi. The ex-Chelsea youngster's deal is set to expire in 12 months time. A striker also remains a target for Liverpool, particularly if Darwin Nunez departs as expected. Newcastle ace Alexander Isak is among those admired but a deal would not be easy.

Liverpool newcomer Florian Wirtz motivated to build on Leverkusen achievements
Liverpool's record signing Florian Wirtz insists he has not moved to Anfield to 'have fun' but believes it is the right place for him to improve and be successful. The Premier League champions have paid Bayer Leverkusen £100million for the 22-year-old Germany international but that fee could potentially become a British record as there are £16m of add-ons included. If achieved that would surpass the existing mark of £115m which Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo in 2023 and it is understood Liverpool will be happy to pay these 'aspirational bonuses' as it will mean they have enjoyed considerable success at elite level. Florian Wirtz is a Red. — Liverpool FC (@LFC) June 20, 2025 And that is what Wirtz, one of Europe's hottest properties, is determined to contribute to. 'I'm not coming (to) have fun here, I want also to achieve something and give the fans what they deserve,' he told the club's website. 'Of course I want to keep going at this performance. So yeah, that sure gives motivation to achieve more. 'I would like to win everything every year. First of all, we have to do our work, I have to make my work. In the end, we want to be successful. 'Last season they won the Premier League, so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious.' "Thank you for the support" ❤️ Get the first words from Florian Wirtz after signing for Liverpool on All Red video 💻 — Liverpool FC (@LFC) June 20, 2025 Wirtz has signed a five-year deal and at 22 has his best years ahead of him. He wants to continue the progress which saw him score 57 goals and contribute 64 assists in 197 appearances for Leverkusen. 'This was also a big point for me: that I will improve my own personal level and physical levels because I think everyone knows that in Liverpool the players are machines – really strong and really physical,' he added. 'But I see this also as an opportunity for me to get better in this point. So yeah, I just thought this was the right place for me.' Liverpool saw off competition from Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid to secure Wirtz. Leverkusen had valued him at £126m but a compromise was reached last week, although the up-front fee easily outstrips the £85m deal Liverpool agreed with Benfica in 2022 for Darwin Nunez, who is expected to leave this summer. 'I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League,' he added. Wirtz is Liverpool's second signing of the summer, following close friend and Leverkusen team-mate Jeremie Frimpong to Anfield, and with the Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvilli joining next month after a deal was agreed a year ago spending has already reached £175m. That is set to be pushed beyond the £200m mark with a £40m fee agreed for Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez. It is their biggest summer window since 2018 when Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson Becker were recruited for around £170m, with Virgil van Dijk having signed for £75m the previous January. Owners Fenway Sports Group have, despite their 'Moneyball' reputation, not been afraid to splash out big fees for transformative players like Van Dijk and Alisson – and Wirtz falls into that category. The club have already recouped around £26m with the departures of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Caoimhin Kelleher with further funds expected to be generated from the likes of Nunez, Harvey Elliott, Federico Chiesa and potentially Andy Robertson, who is a target for Atletico Madrid.

Martin issues transfer promise to Rangers supporters ahead of crucial Champions League showdown
Russell Martin has pledged that Rangers will have the necessary reinforcements in place by the time they face Panathinaikos next month. The new Ibrox manager will welcome the squad back to Auchenhowie on Monday for pre-season training. Already without players from last term including Leon Balogun, Vaclav Cerny and Ianis Hagi, Martin has just over four weeks left before his reign begins in earnest with the home leg of the Champions League second qualifying round tie. While Lyall Cameron has joined from Dundee and moves are afoot to sign Bournemouth right back Max Aarons and Peterborough winger Kwame Poku, there is still a lot of work to do before the squad will match the new man's expectations. Confident the necessary additions will be made in due course, Martin said: 'I think the squad will look different. We will have some players in by then as well. 'The earlier we can do that the better, so they become ingrained in what we are trying to build culturally and in terms of performance. Russell Martin is looking forward to working with his new squad when they return on Monday 'The players are back in on Monday. That's the most exciting bit. We will see what the players can do, how we are going to have to adapt and tweak to make it really built-in and ready for us, and then the rest will take care of itself.' Martin was speaking after the Premiership fixture was announced, handing him an opening trip to Fir Park to face Jens Berthel Askou's Motherwell. The pair previously played together at Norwich City as the Canaries won back-to-back promotions under Paul Lambert. 'We have a big fixture before that [against Panathinaikos] to really focus on, and then we can start really preparing for Motherwell and focusing on that,' said Martin. 'But, wherever we go, we want to be ourselves, we are going to try and be the team we want to be all the time. It's exciting, it's against an old team-mate of mine in Jens. We played together at Norwich many, many moons ago and we have stayed in touch. 'We know him, his character and personality and how he will have his team ready, so it will be tough. 'But they are all tough. We need to focus on ourselves and what we are going to be in the next four or five weeks and making sure we are really ready to attack every challenge, whether it's the European game before that or the start of the league season.' Rangers could have landed Brann or Servette in Europe but were pitted against the highest-ranked team in the league path of the draw. Undaunted by the challenge of facing the Greeks, Martin said: 'A lot of people said to me it's maybe the toughest draw we could have had, but we have to play against and beat good teams if we want to compete in European football. 'It gives us something to work towards and look at them, but the focus is going to be on us and making sure we are ready to compete against anyone by the time the game comes around.'
