Disney Reportedly Planning Full Reboot of the INDIANA JONES Franchise — GeekTyrant
'Lucasfilm is letting the franchise rest for a bit before they do a full reboot of the franchise. I would expect the studio to announce something next year at the D23 Expo because even though the last film tanked at the box office, Indiana Jones is still an iconic IP and Disney/Lucasfilm do not want to waste that.'
It's not hard to see why Disney would want to reassess things. After acquiring Lucasfilm in 2012, Star Wars content exploded, but Indy stayed mostly dormant. Nearly a decade passed before Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny finally hit theaters in 2023, and after all that anticipation… the movie flopped.
Despite fairly positive reviews, Dial of Destiny grossed just $384 million globally against a massive production budget reportedly in the $295–387 million range. That's not what you want from a cornerstone IP.
James Mangold stepped in to direct Dial of Destiny after Steven Spielberg, who helmed the first four films, chose to bow out. The movie marked Harrison Ford's final outing as the fedora-wearing archaeologist. While the legacy actor was gracious in his exit, telling press 'Shit happens' in response to the film's box office performance, Mangold admitted that 'it hurt' to see the movie underperform.
Still, Indy isn't going away. As the report notes, the character is simply too valuable to leave in a wooden crate marked Top Secret and stashed away in a warehouse. The recent release of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle , a critically acclaimed video game, proves there's still life in the brand., and if Disney wants to keep it going, a reboot makes the most sense.
The big question is, how will they go about doing that? Producers of the franchise have already said that they won't recast Indiana Jones, but Disney could always just ignore that and recast. Or they introduce a whole new character set in the same universe.
Personally, I would love to see a new adventure film or series that follows Ke Huy Quan's Short Round as an adult. The series could fill us in on what happened to him after the events of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom , and how his relationship with Indiana shaped his life. The series could show us what became of Short Round, and how he followed in Indiana's footsteps and became an archaeologist.
In 2008, The Lost Journal of Indiana Jones was published, and it says that Short Round actually did become an archaeologist like his mentor, and went even went on a journey to track down the Peacock's Eye, which was the diamond Indy lost at the beginning of The Temple of Doom .
No official announcement has been made yet, but with D23 coming up next year, don't be surprised if Disney finally opens that sarcophagus and reveals what's next for the franchise.

South Park season 27 is now expected to premiere on Wednesday, July 23, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, representing a two-week scheduling push. The merger the guys are referring to, which will combine David Ellison's Skydance and Paramount Global, is set to close by July 6. The deadline could be extended. The press release in question, the one announcing the rescheduling of South Park's new season, comes amid a fight over the hit animated series' streaming rights. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Parker and Stone (through their attorney) threatened legal action against Paramount, accusing the company's incoming president Jeff Shell of meddling in their contract negotiations with Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix. Shell will be installed as Skydance-Paramount's president once the deal is done. Paramount currently has two years left on its $900 million deal for South Park's digital rights; South Park streams on Paramount+, and Parker and Stone believe Shell is willing to tank bids from WBD and Netflix to keep it that way. In the June 21 letter obtained by THR, Park County, the entertainment company run by Parker and Stone, threatened legal action over Shell allegedly interfering in discussions with the potential bidders, including an ask to modify certain terms of their offers in a 'manner calculated to benefit Paramount at the expense' of Park County. The letter pointed to Shell urging WBD to give Paramount+ an exclusive 12-month window for new episodes of the show and to shorten the term of the deal from 10 to five years, which could worsen bids for the series. Parker and Stone are 50-50 partners with Paramount in joint venture South Park Digital Studios, referred to in the letter as SPDS. 'We hereby demand that you, Redbird, and Skydance immediately cease your interference,' the letter states. 'If these activities continue, we will have no choice but to act to both protect our rights and discharge any obligations we may have to the public.' Redbird Capital Partners is a venture capital firm; Shell is its current chairman of sports and media. 'You did this behind Park County's back,' its general counsel Afshin Beyzaee wrote to Shell. 'That self-dealing would have been absolutely restricted if it were done by Paramount itself. So, it is simply outrageous that even before it has been granted the authority to close the merger with Paramount, Redbird and Skydance are jumping the gun and using confidential information of SPDS to purport to make demands on behalf of SPDS that even Paramount has no right to make.' Park County says that Shell 'had no right or authority to be demanding that SPDS's prospective counterparties make modifications to their proposals, especially modifications that would depress the value of their proposals.' In a statement provided to THR at the time, a Skydance spokesperson responded, 'Under the terms of the transaction agreement, Skydance has the right to approve material contracts.' Reps for Paramount Global and Comedy Central did not immediately respond to THR's request for comment on Parker and Stone's tweeted statement. South Park debuted on Comedy Central on Aug. 13, 1997. The series followed a viral animated short — 'The Spirit of Christmas' — featuring the show's characters Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny. Parker and Stone executive produce South Park along with Anne Garefino and Frank C. Agnone II; Eric Stough, Adrien Beard, Bruce Howell and Vernon Chatman are producers. Christopher Brion is the creative director of South Park Digital Studios, a joint venture between Parker and Stone and Paramount. Itasca Rock Garden's castle shows off the beauty of the area's multi-colored stones
The Itasca Rock Garden in Albert Lea is home to a Danish-inspired castle of sorts. "I drive by and see Marion Ross on the corner looking over Fountain Lake, makes me smile," said Stephanie Kibler of the Freeborn County History Center. The bronze statue of the former Happy Days actress sits comfortably in her hometown of Albert Lea. But had it been created in another lifetime, it may have been sculpted out of rock. One hundred years ago a Danish immigrant named John Christensen was trying to farm near the village of Itasca. But he kept hitting rocks with his plow. Instead of getting frustrated, he got creative. "Behind me you'll see the large castle, which he started. It was reminiscent of the castles he grew up with in Denmark," said Kibler. Christensen didn't stop with the castle. Over the years he and his wife also built stone sculptures, bridges, and grottos, like the heart-shaped grotto. "Look at the size of the rock this gentleman carried or moved. I don't have a clue how," said Kibler while pointing out a large rock. The Danish immigrant was in his sixties when he built much of the rock garden, including a home for Irg, the garden's resident gnome. Christensen died in 1939, but there's a sense that he never completely finished what he started. And had he lived longer, the rock garden likely would have expanded even further. But as it goes, the place became neglected and overgrown. And it wasn't until 2019 when the Kohler Foundation got involved, that the garden got a makeover. "We had a landscape company come out and I think she told me they took 15 dump truck loads out of here of weeds, tree growth," said Kibler. Flowers replaced the weeds, thanks to a dozen volunteers including gardener Sue Grunzke. "Over the years I'd go by and look and think, oh, it would be so nice if somebody would fix that all up," said Grunzke. Grunzke got her wish. Her family visited the garden when she was young. Now, she's back with a different purpose. "Each time coming out and seeing it come alive, it's incredible," said Grunzke. The rebirth means the return of visitors from across the state. Rolling stones of a different sort, eager to see how a farmer once built a kingdom out of field rocks. "I hope people come and see what a peaceful, beautiful environment it is. And recognize that the city of Albert Lea is also a very beautiful place," said Kibler. Itasca Rock Garden is named after a pioneer village that once stood on the property. It's free to visit and the garden is located northwest of Albert Lea near Itasca and Bluegrass Roads.
