Will Benson powers Reds to victory over Braves
Benson, who scored twice, drove in a pair of runs and stole a base before he crossed the plate on Matt McLain two-out single in the sixth for the game's first run.
Reds right-hander Brady Singer (9-8) set a season high with 10 strikeouts while allowing just four hits and a walk over six shutout innings. Braves right-hander Bryce Elder (4-8) gave up two runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings with two walks and five strikeouts.
Benson led off the Cincinnati sixth with a sinking line drive single that center fielder Michael Harris II nearly caught as he went to the ground. Benson stole second as Elder retired the next two batters, but McLain's grounder up the middle broke the scoreless tie.
Atlanta left-hander Dylan Dodd entered in the seventh to face Benson. The left-handed hitting Benson drilled a 2-1 pitch to the left field seats for his ninth homer of the season. He now has three career home runs against lefties, including two this season. He entered batting .063 against left-handers this season.
The Braves loaded the bases with one out in the second and had runners at second and third in the eighth, but they went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position through the first eight innings.
They rallied in the ninth inning off Emilio Pagan, who allowed a walk to Marcell Ozuna, a Harris single, and an RBI single from Ozzie Albies. With the potential go-ahead runner at the plate, the Reds' closer retired the next three hitters, including a Luke Williams sacrifice fly, to earn his 23rd save.
The two teams played in the afternoon before heading to Bristol, Tenn., for Saturday night's Speedway Classic.

August 3 - Wyatt Langford singled home the go-ahead run in the 11th inning as the Texas Rangers defeated the host Seattle Mariners 6-4 on Saturday afternoon. The Rangers took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Rowdy Tellez led off with an infield single and Higashioka deposited a 2-2 fastball from Luis Castillo into Texas' bullpen in left field. Merrill Kelly, making his Rangers debut after being acquired from Arizona at the trade deadline, allowed just one hit through the first five innings - an infield single by rookie Cole Young with two outs in the third. The Mariners tied the score in the sixth with the help of a mental mistake by Kelly. J.P. Crawford, led off with a ground-rule double into the right-field corner. With one out, Arozarena lined a single to center, sending Crawford to third. Trying to keep Arozarena from stealing second, Kelly committed a balk by disengaging from the pitching rubber three times. That allowed Crawford to trot home and Arozarena to advance. With two outs, Julio Rodriguez lined a double to right to tie the score. Chiefs star breaks silence on impending jail sentence after causing crash on Dallas highway
Kansas City Chiefs star Rashee Rice insists he's 'completely changed' since his hit-and-run crash on a Dallas highway that was captured in a viral video last year. Rice was estimated to be speeding at 119mph before the collision, which resulted in several injuries for other motorists and passengers back in 2024. The wide receiver has since been sentenced to five years' probation and 30 days of jail time - which can be served at any time over the next five years. As he awaits a verdict from the league on his punishment, Rice has been at the Chiefs training camp and, on Saturday, took time to speak to reporters about the 2024 crash. He explained: 'I´ve completely changed. You have to learn from things like that. I've learned and taken advantage of being able to learn from something like that.' In a related lawsuit, Rice has agreed to pay $1million to a plaintiff who sued him over the 2024 crash, according to court documents obtained by Daily Mail. Rice is also being forced to pay $75,000 in pre-judgement interest and $12,000 in plaintiff attorney fees. The Chiefs are bracing for Rice to serve an NFL suspension. League spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement recently that the case 'remains under review.' 'My legal team is handling all that,' Rice said. 'All I can focus on is what I can control right now and that's me doing what I do.' Despite his looming punishment, Rice is looking to make a comeback following a ligament injury suffered in Week 4 - after colliding with Patrick Mahomes - which ended his entire 2024 season. The occupants of the Lamborghini and the other speeding vehicle — a Corvette — left without checking on the drivers and passengers in the other four cars involved in the collision. A spokesman for the rental company, The Classic Lifestyle, said the Lamborghini rents for about $1,750 a day and is worth about $250,000. Police said the Corvette and Lamborghini were speeding in the far-left lane of North Central Expressway when they lost control. The Lamborghini went onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing a chain-reaction collision. Four people in the other vehicles were treated for minor injuries. The wide receiver was spotted at Chiefs training camp this week alongside Travis Kelce After his client was seen fleeing the scene of the accident, West said at the time that Rice would 'take all necessary steps to address this situation responsibly.' Rice, a member of the Super Bowl LVIII-winning Chiefs team, is from the Dallas area. He played for Southern Methodist University and grew up in the Fort Worth suburb of North Richland Hills. Kings re-sign F Alex Laferriere to 3-year, $12.3M extension
August 3 - The Los Angeles Kings signed forward Alex Laferriere to a three-year, $12.3 million contract extension through the 2027-28 season, the team announced on Saturday. The new deal has an average annual value of $4.1 million. Laferriere, 23, played his second NHL season in 2024-25 and set career highs in a number of statistical categories, including 19 goals, 23 assists and 42 points. He also posted career-bests with a plus-22 rating, four game-winning goals, 193 shots, 43 blocks, 124 hits and 16:32 average ice time in 77 regular-season games. Laferriere recorded three assists in six playoff games this past season.
