Wichita may soon have its own ID cards
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW)—The City of Wichita could soon have its own form of identification. The City Council is slated to vote on whether to create a municipal ID program.
The municipal ID would be available to anyone. However, it's more targeted toward the unhoused. It would allow them to access more services, and City Council members say it could also help prevent them from being lost in the system.
A municipal ID card would help people who lack easy access to documents like birth certificates or social security cards.
'We've been working on it in the city council for about three years, and we heard need in our community that people need access to IDs,' Tuttle said.
Justice Together is a coalition of nonprofits in Wichita that advocates for municipal IDs, specifically to benefit the unhoused.
'That will allow folks to have the identification to get services in the community in their city and be I-9 eligible for work,' Deann Smith, a member of Justice Together, said.
It can also help ensure that people who are homeless have proper access to housing and wraparound services from the city.
'It's gonna help us be able to track and just make sure everyone is doing what they need to do as far as the work plans that we set up to get them back on their feet,' District 3 Wichita City Council Member Mike Hoheisel said.
He says that includes ensuring unhoused people make it to therapy and doctor's appointments.
Municipal IDs would only be recognized within Wichita city limits. They would not be state IDs, so they cannot be used as voter IDs.
Justice Together says they hope the county takes on a similar form of identification, but that hasn't been discussed.

Forms can be completed online at or by mailing or dropping off a paper form at your municipal board of canvassers office. In Senate District 4, spanning North Providence and a small section of Providence, four Democrats have signaled their intent to run for the open seat left vacant after former Senate President Dominick Ruggerio died in April. There is also one Republican and one independent who have declared they are running, and will compete in an Aug. 5 general election. Senate candidates must submit nomination forms with 100 valid signatures from voters by June 10 to have their name appear on the ballot. Central Falls will hold special elections — without a primary — on July 8 for an open seat on the City Council alongside a ballot question over changes to the structure of the city school board. One candidate, Anthony Solano, will appear on the ballot for the open City Council District 4 seat, having already submitted the required signatures by the May 7 deadline. Close behind the registration deadline is a second key date for primary voters: The deadline to apply for a mail ballot. Applications are already available online, due back no later than 4 p.m. June 17. Applications sent by mail must be postmarked by the Aug. 20 deadline. Another special election is slated for Aug. 5 in Coventry to decide two seats on the Coventry Town Council. Three candidates — Richard Houle, Kathy Farwell and Robert Delellis — have declared their intent to run in the nonpartisan race, for which there is no primary. Coventry voters have until Sunday, July 6, to register to vote. Salt Lake City considers raising costs of metered parking, minimizing free time
SALT LAKE CITY () — Parking in downtown Salt Lake City may start making a bigger dent in your wallet. As part of the city budget for the 2026 fiscal year, the Salt Lake City Council is considering changing the hourly rates for metered parking throughout the city, as well as the collection days and hours. Currently, metered parking is available at just $2.25 an hour. The city collects this fee between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. On Saturday, the parking is free for two hours, while on Sunday, parking is free for the whole day. The proposal would also take away the two free hours on Saturday and extend the collection hours from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Sunday would keep its free parking. The Salt Lake City Council will next meet on Tuesday, June 10, at 1 p.m. for a work session, where the calendar includes considering unresolved issues. A formal City Council meeting will be held at 7 p.m., where council members will consider adopting the proposed budget. ‘America's cop' Bernie Kerik remembered as ‘raw, real' family man at NYC funeral
Thousands of people flooded St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan on Friday to pay their final respects to 'America's Cop' Bernie Kerik, remembering him as a hero who 'took command' on 9/11. The former NYPD commissioner was eulogized by his son, Joey Kerik, as a steadfast family man even during his high-profile career leading the city's police department through the terror attacks. His law enforcement career spanned four decades and involved national security work and helming the NYPD during 9/11, overseeing its response, rescue, recovery and investigative efforts in the aftermath. Kerik is survived by his wife, Hala Matil Kerik, and three children, including a son with ex-wife Jacqueline Llerena.
