Five Melaka PKR division chiefs back Nurul Izzah for deputy president, say party needs her vision and voice
MELAKA, May 7 — Five PKR division chiefs in Melaka have expressed their full backing for Nurul Izzah Anwar to contest the deputy presidency in this month's party elections.
The five are Hang Tuah Jaya division chief, who is also prime minister's senior political secretary, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, Mohd Khuzaire Mohd Kamal Kannan (Alor Gajah), Azlan Osman (Tangga Batu), Jagatheason Ramiah (Jasin) and Md Yusoff Ahmad (Kota Melaka).
In a joint statement, they said Nurul Izzah's nomination is not merely about personality or legacy, but PKR's future as a progressive political party that continues gaining people's trust. They added that she is no stranger to the party's reform movement.
'From the start, she has shown firm principles, courage in speaking out, and relentless commitment in championing the agenda of social justice, human rights and institutional reform.
'Her experience as a vice-president, two-term Member of Parliament and social activist, including her recent recognition in the 'Project Syndicate Forward Thinkers List', reinforces her credibility and readiness to take on a greater leadership role in the party,' the statement read.
They said that in today's dynamic political landscape, the party needs a leader who can serve as a bridge between the founding and younger generations and embodies moderation, principle, progressiveness and vision.
'We are confident that Nurul Izzah possesses all these leadership qualities. She has the ability to revitalise PKR, strengthen synergy with partners in the Unity Government and continue our struggle towards a just, stable and inclusive nation,' the statement read.
In a separate statement, the Tapah PKR Division also proposed and voiced full support for Nurul Izzah's candidacy for the deputy president post.
Division chief Azam Afandi said Nurul Izzah, as a principled, experienced and reform-driven young leader, has proven her ability to champion social justice and advocate change for the people.
'She also brings the values of moderation, firm principles and progressive thinking to inject new spirit into PKR, while further strengthening the party's synergy with its allies in the Unity Government.
'This is not about personality or legacy, but about the future of PKR as a party that remains relevant and trusted by the people,' he said.
Nurul Izzah had earlier announced her intention to defend her vice-president post in the upcoming party polls.
The deputy president post is currently held by Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — The Pahang government has officially banned the use of electronic cigarettes or vape within the state. State Islamic Affairs, Rural Development and Orang Asli Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Seri Syed Ibrahim Syed Ahmad said the ban follows a fatwa issued by the Pahang Mufti Department, according to a report published by Buletin TV3 today. The fatwa was formally communicated to the Pahang State Legal Adviser's Office on March 3 via a memorandum submitted by the Menteri Besar's Office addressing the growing use of vape among the public. 'The state government took note of the fatwa, and it was brought to the Pahang State Executive Council (Exco) meeting on May 14, where it received the royal assent of the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. 'His Majesty had, on several occasions, expressed concern over this matter,' he said. Syed Ibrahim also urged all local authorities to enforce the ban gradually and tactfully, with the aim of educating the public to avoid vaping. On November 18 last year, Al-Sultan Abdullah called for a complete ban on vape, citing growing concern over rising drug abuse in the state, especially among youth, as reported by the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK).

Sabah Umno clarifies cautious stance on coalitions, vows not to repeat past mistakes
KOTA KINABALU, June 12 — Sabah Umno has clarified that Barisan Nasional's (BN) current political stance should not be interpreted as a complete rejection of cooperation with other parties, but rather a cautious approach shaped by past experiences. In a statement released by Sabah Umno information chief Datuk Suhaimi Nasir, the party reiterated that BN is not closing its doors to political collaboration. However, any decision to form a coalition must be rooted in the people's interests, the need for state stability and lessons drawn from past political developments, especially those surrounding the 16th state election (PRN16). The statement comes in response to Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) secretary-general Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun's statement recently, saying the coalition shares the same sentiment regarding Sabah BN's reluctance to team up in PRN17. However, Masidi said they have not made a firm decision on the matter until the Supreme Council meeting, which is expected to take place either this month or early July. 'During the last state election, certain political collaborations led to unfavourable consequences for BN, particularly in terms of integrity, trust and a shared political direction,' Suhaimi said. 'This is not merely about ideological differences, but also about political sincerity and consistency in leadership,' he added. He emphasised that Sabah Umno and BN's current approach is to assess any potential alliance objectively, rationally and strategically, without haste or in response to short-term political demands. 'We will not repeat past mistakes, nor will we allow Sabah Umno to once again be placed in a political position that sidelines the voices of our grassroots members,' Suhaimi added. He also stressed that determining Sabah's future should not be reduced to a numbers game of how many parties can come together at the negotiating table. MACC strengthens anti-corruption education with UK partnership
BANGI: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is committed to strengthening education and training for its enforcement officers through strategic cooperation with Nottingham Trent University (NTU), United Kingdom. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Bak said it is an effort to produce officers with high integrity who are prepared to face the challenges of corruption in the digital era. He said the academic collaboration, which began in 2017, has produced graduates who are not only intellectually excellent but also instilled with strong moral values and ethics. 'This foundational training and academic study not only demand excellence but also emphasise values of integrity, trust, and ethics that are central to our fight against corruption in all its forms. 'Today's graduates are at the beginning of a greater challenge in the real working world of MACC because the world is changing rapidly, marked by technological explosions, artificial intelligence, and social complexities that require not only knowledge but also moral wisdom and strength of principles,' he said at the 2025 MACC-NTU International Law Enforcement Programme Convocation Ceremony held at the Avenue Convention Centre in Bangi, here, today. The convocation ceremony was also attended by Executive Dean, School of Social Sciences, NTU, Prof Daragh Mcdermott and MACC Deputy Chief Commisioner (Operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahya. The programme offers two academic pathways, including the Postgraduate Diploma in International Law Enforcement: Anti-Corruption Leadership (Level 7) and the Professional Diploma in International Law Enforcement: Anti-Corruption Studies (Level 5), both designed to equip officers with knowledge in law, criminal psychology, forensic data, and artificial intelligence applications. A total of 250 graduates successfully completed the programme, comprising 74 from Level 7 and 176 from Level 5, all of whom have now been appointed as newly commissioned MACC officers.
