Adam Adli unworried about GE16 candidacy despite division polls loss
In 2022, deputy youth and sports minister Adam Adli won the Hang Tuah Jaya parliamentary seat in a four-cornered fight with an 8,638-vote majority. PETALING JAYA : Despite his loss at last month's divisional polls, PKR's Adam Adli is not losing sleep over the possibility that he may be dropped as a candidate for the next general election. The outgoing youth chief said there are many factors that the party would need to consider when nominating a candidate. On April 13, Adam failed in his bid for the Hang Tuah Jaya deputy chief post, polling 791 votes. His opponent, Zamzizul Nordin won the contest with 1,905. That loss has sparked concern that Adam may struggle to defend his parliamentary seat. However, Adam said he was selected to contest the Hang Tuah Jaya seat at the 2022 general election despite not being a member of the division. He went on to win a four-cornered fight with an 8,638-vote majority. 'This shows that PKR does not select a candidate based on which division they are from. That is just one factor. 'So the question of whether or not I am still safe (and will be selected to defend the Hang Tuah Jaya seat) does not arise,' he said in an exclusive interview with FMT. The deputy youth and sports minister was responding to a suggestion by political analyst Tawfik Yaakub that he search for a new seat to stand in following his loss at the divisional polls. Tawfik also suggested that Adam make way for Shamsul Iskandar Akin to contest the Hang Tuah parliamentary seat at the next general election. Shamsul, who serves as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's senior political secretary, pulled in 1,995 votes to wrest the division chief's post from incumbent Rafee Ibrahim, who secured 736 votes. Adam stated that while PKR values public opinion, its decisions are not always driven by political strategy. He said that despite his loss at the divisional level, he still retains strong support at grassroot level. 'When I return to the constituency, I always receive words of encouragement from the locals. Many also turned up for an Aidilfitri event I hosted after the polls concluded.' Adam said that for now, his main focus is to serve his constituency. 'My loss (at the polls) has not discouraged me.'

Adam Adli's rapid rise in politics saw him go from student activist to PKR's youth wing chief in 2022. PETALING JAYA : Outgoing PKR Youth chief Adam Adli hopes his meteoric rise in politics would not be cut short at the party elections next week, where he is vying for a spot on the central leadership council. The former student activist, who joined PKR in 2021, was made the wing's chief a year later before being named the party's candidate for the Hang Tuah Jaya parliamentary seat in the 15th general election. In December 2022, he was appointed deputy youth and sports minister in the unity government. 'It is a whirlwind political journey which happened over a few years. 'But I do want to avoid an 'easy-come-easy-go' situation,' he told FMT in an exclusive interview. Commenting on the May 23 polls, Adam admitted he was concerned about his chances of climbing the political ladder after failing in his bid to become the Hang Tuah Jaya PKR division deputy chief last month. Adam lost to Zamzizul Nordin, while the prime minister's political secretary Shamsul Iskandar Akin defeated Rafee Ibrahim – Adam's running mate — for the division chief post. However, he is taking that loss in his stride and would rather focus on the positives, adding that winning and losing was part and parcel of politics. 'Losing isn't the end of the world. Instead it inspires me to work harder. It (losing) also provides me the opportunity to reflect on my identity and weaknesses.' Adam said one of the issues he identified during the divisional elections was a lack of preparation when going up against Shamsul and the latter's team. 'So I need to improve on this to ensure I have sufficient support (in future).' Separately, Adam said he will be banking on his three-year experience as the PKR Youth chief to appeal to the delegates who would eventually have a say in whether he sits on the 20-seat council. Among his achievements, which he hopes will be a pull factor, was stabilising the wing's divisions after the 'Sheraton Move' led to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government in 2020. This was after several of the wing's members defected to other parties. 'Post Sheraton Move, there were around 53 to 57 divisions. Now there are over 200. 'And this was done in such a short span of time as we were scrambling to prepare for a general election.'

Five Melaka PKR division chiefs back Nurul Izzah for deputy president, say party needs her vision and voice
MELAKA, May 7 — Five PKR division chiefs in Melaka have expressed their full backing for Nurul Izzah Anwar to contest the deputy presidency in this month's party elections. The five are Hang Tuah Jaya division chief, who is also prime minister's senior political secretary, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, Mohd Khuzaire Mohd Kamal Kannan (Alor Gajah), Azlan Osman (Tangga Batu), Jagatheason Ramiah (Jasin) and Md Yusoff Ahmad (Kota Melaka). In a joint statement, they said Nurul Izzah's nomination is not merely about personality or legacy, but PKR's future as a progressive political party that continues gaining people's trust. They added that she is no stranger to the party's reform movement. 'From the start, she has shown firm principles, courage in speaking out, and relentless commitment in championing the agenda of social justice, human rights and institutional reform. 'Her experience as a vice-president, two-term Member of Parliament and social activist, including her recent recognition in the 'Project Syndicate Forward Thinkers List', reinforces her credibility and readiness to take on a greater leadership role in the party,' the statement read. They said that in today's dynamic political landscape, the party needs a leader who can serve as a bridge between the founding and younger generations and embodies moderation, principle, progressiveness and vision. 'We are confident that Nurul Izzah possesses all these leadership qualities. She has the ability to revitalise PKR, strengthen synergy with partners in the Unity Government and continue our struggle towards a just, stable and inclusive nation,' the statement read. In a separate statement, the Tapah PKR Division also proposed and voiced full support for Nurul Izzah's candidacy for the deputy president post. Division chief Azam Afandi said Nurul Izzah, as a principled, experienced and reform-driven young leader, has proven her ability to champion social justice and advocate change for the people. 'She also brings the values of moderation, firm principles and progressive thinking to inject new spirit into PKR, while further strengthening the party's synergy with its allies in the Unity Government. 'This is not about personality or legacy, but about the future of PKR as a party that remains relevant and trusted by the people,' he said. Nurul Izzah had earlier announced her intention to defend her vice-president post in the upcoming party polls. The deputy president post is currently held by Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli. — Bernama
