Delhi govt puts off launch of 330 electric buses due to mourning on demise of Pope Francis
The Delhi government on Tuesday postponed its launch of 330 electric buses due to the national mourning on the demise of Pope Francis.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said a new date for the launch under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Interconnector (DEVI) scheme would be announced soon.
In a message on social media site X, CM Gupta said, 'Due to the national mourning declared by the Government of India on the demise of His Holiness Pope Francis, the launch of electric buses under the DEVI scheme has been postponed. The new date will be announced soon.'
The launch of the new fleet of nine-metre green mini-buses was planned to be a major step towards revolutionising the national capital's public transport sector and counter pollution.
The now-postponed launch was to be presided over by Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav.
Before deciding to delay the launch, CM Rekha said in a social media post, 'On this #EarthDay, we are taking a transformative step towards a greener future with the launch of 330 new electric buses under the #DEVI initiative...'
'This is our sincere effort to make Delhi's journey cleaner, safer, and more sustainable for generations to come. Join us today as we celebrate this historic milestone. Your support matters- together, let's drive Delhi towards a greener and healthier tomorrow!' she said.
The green-coloured buses, which were earlier proposed to be named 'Mohalla Buses' by the previous AAP government, will soon hit the road. These buses were undergoing trial runs on half a dozen routes over the past few months.
On the eve of the now-postponed launch, Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Singh said that the free travel facility for women shall continue in the new buses, which will follow the existing fare rates followed in the bigger 12-metre-long buses.
The mini-electric bus service, christened DEVI, promise to offer relief to citizens living in congested areas as these mini-buses are capable of moving easily on narrow roads. Each DEVI bus will have 23 seats and space for 13 standing passengers.
With routes not longer than 12 km and a charging time of less than an hour, the DEVI buses, modelled on Delhi Metro's feeder buses, are likely to bring commuters from interior streets to wider arterial roads that are serviced by Delhi Transport Corporation's longer 12-metre buses.
Officials said the first batch of Devi buses will operate from the Ghazipur, Nangloi and East Vinod Nagar depots.

Youth surveys, air pollution-themed street plays: Delhi schools directed to engage youth in clean air programme awareness
Students above the age of 15, studying in Delhi's schools, should be made aware of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) through the Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat) platform, the Directorate of Education (DoE) asked all Deputy Directors of Education (DDEs) on Wednesday as part of a youth empowerment initiative. In an office memorandum on May 22, the Ministry for Environment, Forest and Climate Change detailed the awareness programme and an outreach initiative by NCAP cities. 'Hon'ble Prime Minister launched 'Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat)' platform to empower the youth (age group 15-29 years) in realising their aspirations and contributing to the creation of a 'Viksit Bharat',' it read. As part of this, year-long awareness programmes have been earmarked with themed campaigns two days in a month as per the scheduling by the urban local bodies. This is to be done through the engagement of youth, schools, colleges and eco-clubs for micro-events, according to the directive. Mega events are also to be organised on special events such as World Environment Day, Air Pollution Awareness Week, Swachh Vayu Diwas, among others. Experiential Learning Programmes (ELP) for at least 120 hours, involving activities related to the NCAP, are also compulsory. On the financial aspect, it stated, 'The…activities…shall be made part of city action plan, and funds provided to cities under NCAP…may be utilised for taking up these activities.' In addition to this, regional directorates of the Central Pollution Control Board, state pollution control boards, and ULBs have been asked to facilitate the maximum registration of youth on the MY Bharat portal, as well as maximise event participation under the NCAP. According to the Centre's annual calendar, the micro events this month include tree plantation drives 'Ek Ped Maa ke Naam 2.0' on roadsides or parks. Apart from this, a student-driven plantation campaign has also been scheduled. For the rest of the months, industry visits, special drives for promotion of cleaner fuels, air pollution-themed street plays, and painting and write-ups on park walls, public places themed on improving air quality, melas with recycled waste products, road cleaning, among others have been planned. Mega events should include workshops, talks by air quality management experts at the school or college level, an air quality improvement hackathon, a documentary screening, and puppet shows. It has also been suggested to confer awards to safai mitras on Swachh Vayu Diwas on September 7. Similarly, a cycling or marathon event may be scheduled on Zero Emission Day on September 21. Surveys are also to be undertaken among the youth for Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan, as per the Centre's directions.

Atishi writes to Delhi CM over private schools fee hike, demands Fee Regulation Bill in Assembly
New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Atishi, on Thursday wrote a letter to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta over the 'uncontrollable' fees of private schools and demanded that the Fee Regulation Bill should be presented in the Assembly during a special session. In her letter to the Delhi CM, Atishi said that the Bill should also be referred to the Select Committee, which will seek the opinion of the parents. 'The Government should immediately call a Special Session of the Assembly and table the Fee Regulation bill. The Bill should then be referred to a Select Committee, with members from both the BJP and AAP. The Select Committee should do a large-scale public consultation involving all stakeholders. Only after this, the final draft of the Bill, after incorporating all changes, should be passed by the Assembly,' Atishi said. 'If the Bill is brought as an Ordinance-without any debate or public consultation- it will just confirm the suspicion of the people of Delhi that the BJP Government is protecting the interests of private schools, not the parents,' the LoP further said. Addressing growing concerns over frequent and unregulated fee increases by private schools, the Delhi Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta cleared the bill, which is expected to apply to 1,677 private schools in the city.
