Dell Rapids, Tri-Valley meet in Game of the Week

Yahoo03-03-2025
DELL RAPIDS, S.D. (KELO) — The class 'A' and 'B' boys basketball playoffs begin in South Dakota on Tuesday and that marks the return of the KELOLAND Sports Game of the Week.
This week's matchup takes us to Dell Rapids, where the Quarriers will meet Tri-Valley in the region 3A playoffs.
The game will air on KELOXTRA (TV) and on KELOLAND.com at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The video player at the top of the screen will update with the game available to watch.
DELL RAPIDS
The Quarriers earned the second-seed in the region 3A standings. Outcomes last Friday helped Dells jump from fourth to second in the standings.
Second place and fifth place are separated by just .6 seed points in the region, as four of the seven teams finished with 11-9 records.
Dell Rapids has been paced by their defense, which is giving up just 46 points per game. That's third best in their region.
Offense has seen some struggles for the Quarriers. They're averaging just 49 points per game, second worst in 3A.
Dell Rapids' magic number on offense appears to be 50 this season. They've scored at least 50 points in 11 games and in those contests, the Quarriers are 9-2. When they score less than 50 points, they're 2-7.
TRI-VALLEY
Tri-Valley had a solid start to the 2024-25 season. They won three of their first seven games to start 3-4.
However, the Mustangs have won just one of their last 13 games.
Tri-Valley scores about a point more per game than the Quarriers, as they average 50 points per game. Their Achilles heel is on defense. The Mustangs allow 60 points per game, worst in region 3A.
The magic number for Tri-Valley defensively should be 55. They've held opponents under 55 points six times this year. They're 4-2 in those games.
That means Tri-Valley has allowed 55 or more points in 14 games and they've lost every one of those contests.
THE MATCHUP
The two teams have already played once this season. Dell Rapids claimed a 57-35 win on February 6.
Tri-Valley trailed 27-22 at halftime, but a costly third quarter saw Dell Rapids push the lead to 44-27 after three on their way to the win.
THE GAME
Tuesday's game will tip-off at 7 p.m. in Dell Rapids and you can watch the game on KELOXTRA (TV) and KELOLAND.com.
Play-by-play and commentary will be provided by KELOLAND's Grant Sweeter and Ian Sacks.

Six West Valley League football teams agree: Their league is best in City Section

It was football media day for six West Valley League teams on Saturday at Granada Hills, and as a unit, the coaches and players are convinced they have a chance to be the best league in the City Section in terms of competition. While defending league champion Birmingham has an overall 49-game winning streak against City Section opponents, Cleveland, Granada Hills, Chatsworth, Taft and El Camino Real hope to be factors in the playoffs. Cleveland is making strides to challenge for second place with a group of talented juniors, including two Nigerian-born players, running back Moyosoreoluwa Odebunmi and linebacker Oluwafemi Okeola. Odebunmi, in his first varsity carry in a scrimmage against Van Nuys on Thursday, ran for a touchdown. "When I scored, I was like, 'Oh wow,'" he said. "But I know it's not going to be easy." Birmingham has an offensive line filled with 300 pounders, and when 6-foot-5, 260-pound quarterback Kevin Hawkins plays tight end, the Patriots are truly giants up front. Coach Jim Rose said of Hawkins running the ball: "It's like tackling a lineman. He's a huge guy out there." Birmingham held a pizza eating contest this past week, and the winner was lineman Pablo Granados, who ate 10 slices in seven minutes. Hawkins was runner-up with seven. Chatsworth offensive lineman Pablo Escobedo is known for riding his horse in his Chatsworth neighborhood. "It's pretty cool," he said. Chatsworth should have one of the league's best running backs in junior Devin Del Toro, who has been playing running back and linebacker since his freshman season. Coach Shawn Johnson said he has made "a huge jump." There are two players in the league who are outstanding two-sport athletes in football and baseball. That's Taft quarterback/catcher Nathan Swinson and El Camino Real defensive back/center fielder Shane Bogacz. Both try to find time to hit the batting cages to stay sharp during football season. Granada Hills will continue to run the double-wing attack, focusing on running the ball, but the midseason availability of transfer quarterback Taiyo Dorio from Crescenta Valley could cause coach Bucky Brooks to try a pass or two. Wingback Myles Cross drew laughter when he said, "I caught a pass." Brooks offered praise to all coaches and players in the City Section. "I applaud all those who opted to stay in the neighborhood and play for neighborhood schools," he said. "I want to salute everyone. I love the competitiveness." Sign up for the L.A. Jeremy Fears Jr., Carson Cooper lead team to Moneyball Pro-Am championship

Add another trophy to the mantle for Jeremy Fears Jr. and Carson Cooper. Fears and Cooper capped off a strong showings in this year's Moneyball Pro-Am with a championship victory on Thursday evening. The two anticipated Spartans starters helped lead Tri-Star to the title over Faygo -- led by Jaxon Kohler and Divine Ugochukwu. Thursday night's semifinals and finals matchups were the last games of this year's event. This was the 20th annual Moneyball Pro-Am, which hopefully will be back again next summer as well. The Moneyball Pro-Am event is historically an opportunity for fans to get a look at the Spartans' offseason growth and itch the basketball scratch in the middle of summer. Cooper was a perfect example of watching offseason growth as he demonstrated an improved three-point shot during the event. Congratulations to Fears and Cooper on winning this year's Moneyball Pro-Am event. We will see if that strong play during the pro-am will continue onto the court this fall as Michigan State looks to defend their Big Ten title next season.
