Vietnam PM: Need for greater Asean unity to tackle global hurdles
KUALA LUMPUR: Greater unity within Asean is urgently needed to confront today's global challenges, says Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the 2025 Asean Leadership and Partnership Forum (ALPF).
He said that no single country can tackle the world's complex issues alone and emphasised the importance of multilateralism and global cooperation.
'No one can solve these global, comprehensive and people-oriented issues alone, not even the United States or China,' he said.
Citing the Covid-19 pandemic as an example, Chinh highlighted the interconnected nature of today's world, where crises quickly impact global systems, livelihoods and public health.
The ALPF was jointly organised by the Asean Economic Club, Asean Business Club, Asean Business Advisory Council and KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific, on the eve of the 46th Asean Summit here.
In a special keynote address read by Cambodian Senior Minister Sok Siphana, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet urged Asean to adopt a more proactive stance amid a fast-evolving global economic landscape.
'We cannot afford to be reactive. By leveraging our Free Trade Agreements, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and strategic ties with key global markets, we ensure that Asean remains a driver of global growth.
'By doing so, we ensure that Asean remains a driver of global growth, rather than a bystander to external economic pressures,' he said.
Hun Manet reaffirmed Cambodia's support for regional cooperation through initiatives such as the Asean Digital Economy Framework Agreement, while warning that a widening digital divide could hinder progress.
'Asean must take decisive steps to ensure digital transformation benefits all member states. This includes expanding digital connectivity, strengthening cybersecurity frameworks and investing in digital skills training,' he said.
Tan Sri Michael Yeoh, founder and chairman of the Asean Economic Club and president of KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific, highlighted the forum's focus on inclusive development.
He stressed the importance of Asean's participation in the global 'great reset' to address change.
'We are living in a world facing a polycrisis, and Asean faces a VUCA environment: volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous,' he said.
Yeoh added that Asean's path forward should focus on centrality, connectivity and climate action, while addressing disruption, digitalisation and division.
Special video addresses were also delivered by Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Asean secretary-general Dr Kao Kim Hourn.
A highlight of the forum was the presentation of the Distinguished Asean Leader Award to Chinh in recognition of his outstanding leadership and contributions to regional cooperation, economic resilience and sustainable development in Asean.
The forum was sponsored by the Kuok Group and Asia Platinum Capital, with Star Media Group Bhd, China Daily and Khmer Times as media partners.

Sarawak offers scholarships to Cambodian students, eyes direct flights
KUCHING: Sarawak is ready to offer scholarships to Cambodian high school and university students while exploring a direct flight route between Phnom Penh and Kuching. Cambodian Senior Minister Oknha Datuk Dr Othsman Hassan confirmed discussions on sending students to study engineering, accounting, and law in Sarawak. He noted that Cambodian scholarship recipients currently study only in Kuala Lumpur, with none placed in Sarawak so far. 'We hope the Sarawak Premier will support the intake of these students... the total number of students has yet to be determined,' he said after meeting Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. After peace deal, MPs to visit Thailand, Cambodia in solidarity
A group of parliamentarians today announced a planned visit to Thailand and Cambodia in solidarity with their counterparts, following the recent peace negotiation mediated by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Fahmi hints at new initiatives for animation sector
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has hinted that new initiatives will be announced for the animation sector. The Communications Minister said the new initiatives would involve the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) and MyCreative Ventures (MyCV). "Next week, I will give a wrapping-up speech in Parliament and there may be a few questions which I will answer officially at the Dewan Rakyat. "My instructions to MyCV and Finas is that aside from preparing funds, we have to look into several aspects of production such as funding from the corporate banking sector," he said at a press conference after announcing the Riuh X Asean event on Thursday (Aug 14). Fahmi said the corporate banking sector is of the view that the creative industry, particularly the animation sector, is profitable. "We want a synergy between the corporate sector and the creative industry. God-willing, MyCV and Finas will facilitate this," he said. At the same time, Fahmi said Finas is currently working hard to strengthen Malaysia's film industry's intellectual property (IP) rights. "Among Finas' efforts are setting up a network which will facilitate locally produced IPs to be brought to the Asean level," he added. Meanwhile, Fahmi said the Riuh X Asean 2025 event would take place from Oct 17 to 26 at a venue to be announced later. Fahmi is expecting 20,000 to 30,000 to attend the event, which is the first of its kind. "This will gather all elements of art, creativity, music and entrepreneurship from Malaysia and Asean, which is true to the theme of Asean 2025 that emphasises unity, inclusivity and sustainability," he said. Among the fringe events taking place over the 10 days is the Riuh X Asean Marketplace. Fahmi said there will be, among others, over 40 stage performances, 30 interactive workshops, 100 food vendors from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. Other events include FrequenSEA, said Fahmi, which is the first Asean music conference that will be held on Oct 21 and 22. Fahmi said admission to the music conference is free and he is targeting over 200 participants including musicians, publishers, and industry leaders to discuss the future of the music industry in South-East Asia.
