Sibbald says Dundee United ‘need to remain confident' in race for Europe

STV News13-05-2025
Dundee United midfielder Craig Sibbald insists confidence remains high despite a losing run putting European qualification under threat.
United sealed a top-six place in the William Hill Premiership with the help of a hat-trick of wins immediately before the split.
But they have since lost three in a row and Saturday's home defeat by St Mirren allowed the sixth-placed Buddies to move two points behind with two games left.
St Mirren have taken ten points from 12 games to pile on the pressure and United might need a result at Ibrox on Wednesday to keep European qualification in their own hands before the final day.
Sibbald said: 'The boys are all confident. We've had a wee blip recently, but every game's tough in the top six and we've been doing really well up until that.
'All in all, I think we've had a really good season and we can be proud of where we are now – not many teams who have been promoted from the Championship have made into the top six straight away.
'Unfortunately, we've not had a good start to the top-six games, but who's to say we can't finish on a high and get maximum points out of the next two games?
'We just need to remain confident and keep believing that we can get something. It's down to us now and we want to finish the season on a high.
'We were disappointed with the result (on Saturday), but it's in our hands and we're sitting in a good position in the table.
'So we just need to learn from our mistakes and try and cut them out them at Ibrox on Wednesday to make sure we can try and get three points.'

Ruben Amorim and Bruno Fernandes in agreement on controversial Man Utd vs Arsenal moment

Arsenal claimed a narrow 1-0 victory away to Manchester United on the opening weekend of the Premier League season but the hosts' manager and captain weren't happy Ruben Amorim insists Arsenal's winner should have been disallowed for a foul on error-prone keeper Altay Bayındır. Manchester United keeper Bayındır got involved in a penalty box tussle and his weak punch allowed Riccardo Calafiori to score the all-important winner. ‌ United boss Amorim said: 'I understand we want goals, but when you touch the goalkeeper that way, I think it's hard. Especially to lose with a goal like this, I think it's hard. It was a strange goal. ‌ 'When you touch the goalkeeper, he needs to use his hands to catch the ball, not push players. He chooses to push players and let the ball pass. But again, it's the rules. If it's allowed, we need to do the same thing.' ‌ Amorim then backed his error-prone keeper - who started with Andre Onana left out of the squad completely - with TV pundit Roy Keane calling Bayındır 'weak and soft.' Amorim said: 'I watch training and I watch games. Tom Heaton and Altay Bayindir did a great job. Andre is going to fight with the other guys.' United captain Bruno Fernandes added: 'Altay was saying in the moment he goes to push the ball, he gets a touch. But we know in the Premier League they don't give much in these type of situations, even if they had a meeting with us saying that if the players are blocking and not looking at the ball, they will whistle more.' Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta praised his players for their hard-fought win even thought new £64m striker Viktor Gyokores drew a blank on his debut and was substituted. Arteta said: 'A big, big result coming into the first game of the season against Old Trafford. I think we did two things very well. One, to take the set-piece and then react to especially mistakes. Some of them are necessary, some of them unusual. 'But the way every single player reacted to that gives us the opportunity to win the game. If not, it's impossible. And that's about how we compete and how much we want to take it. 'Viktor did a lot of things very good. But coming away to Manchester United, winning your first game with Arsenal, it's a good start.' Rasmus Hojlund left out of Man Utd squad for Arsenal game amid exit speculation

Rasmus Hojlund was omitted from the squad for Manchester United's Premier League opener against Arsenal as speculation swirls about his future. The 22-year-old striker has failed to justify his price tag since joining from Atalanta two years ago for £64million plus a potential £8m in add-ons. Hojlund has been linked with a return to Serie A this summer and was an unused substitute in United's final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina last weekend. 🥁 Here it is… Our first #PL starting line-up of 2025/26! 🔴👊 — Manchester United (@ManUtd) August 17, 2025 New signing Benjamin Sesko was presented before that game and appeared from the bench against the Gunners at Old Trafford, where the Denmark international was conspicuous by his absence. United head coach Ruben Amorim said after Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal: 'It is a fight for places. 'We'll see what is going to happen in the market. There are different characteristics. Rasmus has the same characteristics of Benjamin Sesko, so we need to choose.'
