Island athlete competes in World Championships
An Isle of Wight athlete travelled to Florida to compete in the World Masters Indoor Championships.
Representing Great Britain, Emily Fry was one of 40,000 master athletes from 80 countries who competed in the event in Gainesville.
The event was open to athletes aged 35 and over.

The indoor venue had a raised platform for the long jump, which was different to what most athletes are used to.
In her first two jumps, Emily fouled and recorded no jumps. This put pressure on her to readjust the length of her run-up. A jump of 4.77m secured her three further jumps.
The top two medals were never in doubt, but the bronze medal was hotly contested. Emily recorded her best of 4.91m twice, which is her season's best jump. She finished in fifth place.

Matildas add A-League Women champ to coaching staff
The Matildas have poached Central Coast's championship-winning coach Emily Husband to join new coach Joe Montemurro's staff as an assistant. Husband departed the Mariners on Monday, after two incredibly successful years at the helm, to take up a full-time role with Football Australia. The Englishwoman was A-League Women (ALW) coach of the year in her first season in 2023-24 when she built the Mariners' squad from scratch, then led them to the semi-finals. She backed up by claiming the club's first ALW championship this year. Husband reunites with Montemurro as his first backroom appointment after serving as his assistant for last year's ALW All Stars game against Arsenal. "Emily is an astute, modern coach who's already proven her quality at the domestic level," Montemurro said. "Her work with the Central Coast Mariners has been phenomenal and demonstrates the qualities she will bring to the Matildas. "Emily has a deep understanding of the game, an ability to connect with players, and a fresh perspective that will be invaluable to our set-up. I'm looking forward to working closely with her once again." Husband was involved in Tom Sermanni's last camp against Argentina as part of FA's 'Team of Coaches' development initiative. The former Canberra United assistant will start ahead of Montemurro's first games against Slovenia on June 26 and 29, then Panama on July 5 and 8, in Perth. Island athletes shine at county championship event
Athletes from the Isle of Wight performed well at a county championship event. Athletes competed at the Portsmouth Mountbatten Centre at the Hampshire County Championship. This includes athletes from the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands. Jacob Patey had a notable weekend. The winner was Nic Ackermann from Guernsey, setting up an anticipated Island Games rematch in Orkney this summer. On May 11, Jacob won another silver in the high jump, achieving a personal best of 1.75m. This performance also qualifies him to compete in the same event at the upcoming Games. His standout performance of the weekend came in the 110m hurdles, where he clinched gold with a time of 16.74 seconds into a headwind. Archie Pearson claimed bronze in the U20 men's 800m, finishing with a time of 2:00.90 in a closely contested race. He is set to compete in middle-distance races at the Games in Orkney. Lucy Rann took home bronze in the women's shot put with a throw of 10.02m and finished fifth in the discus with 26.83m. Lucy is currently ranked Britain's No. 2 W40 athlete in these events. Veteran athlete Emily Fry, despite missing the 100m sprint on the first day due to a foot injury, managed to secure a bronze medal in the long jump with her best jump of 5.07m in two years. Other athletes also delivered commendable performances. Sophie McCallum, who is also set to compete in Orkney, finished second in her 100m heat and raced well to finish fifth in the final, despite battling strong headwinds. Holly Whitter came fifth in the senior 100m and fourth in the javelin. Noah Patey achieved a personal best of 4:21.95, finishing ninth in the senior 1500m. The Foster brothers, Seb and Theo, finished tenth and fifth in their respective 1500m and 800m races. In the U15 boys' shot put, Ben McCormack came fourth, and Noah Gartell finished seventh in the javelin with a personal best. Lastly, Ollie Donovan finished fifth in his 800m heat.
