Focus on waste audit, segregation and management in 100-day municipal action plan

Waste audit of assessing the quantity and types of waste generated in a specific area, waste segregation and sustainable waste management practices will be the main focus of the 100-day action plan initiated by the government for improving conditions in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs, apart from the GHMC) across the State on the Telangana State Formation Day from June 2. The plan cleared by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who also holds the municipal administration and urban development department, includes identifying gaps in segregation, reducing waste reduction, recycling and better disposal practices. The audit will be to assess waste composition, identify gaps in segregation at every major source like a school, market, commercial area etc., informed top officials. It is to help in recommending strategies for waste reduction, recycling, and better disposal practices. Householders will also be encouraged to separate wet and dry waste at the source itself with separate bins. Local bodies have been directed to promote composting of organic waste to reduce landfill problem burden and also generate compost at the household/community level. Composting units will be set up in schools to process organic waste like food and garden waste, they said. Sanitary workers at all levels will be profiled to ensure they get their dues, including ESI/PF benefits, even as health camps will be held. The action plan also involves fixing iron mesh over open drains to prevent the entry of solid waste – a major issue of municipalities - reduce blockages and enhance cleanliness. Desiltation of storm water drains, removal of debris to prevent water logging is also on cards. Apart from reworking the street vending units and testing for food quality, street food festivals are to be conducted. The ULBs have been told to promote urban greenery and beautification efforts like development of at least one traffic junction and a park. The 'Bhuvan' survey for identification of unassessed and under assessed properties to bring them in tax net is being revived as part of the drive in association with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC). Identifying commercial and mixed properties lacking trade licences and collecting fee, door-to-door survey of all water supply house service connections for ward wise enumeration, and so on are among the activities earmarked during this period, they added.

Mumbai metro launches battery swapping for electric vehicles at 31 stations

Mumbai has taken a major step towards clean and efficient urban travel by introducing battery-swapping stations at 31 Metro and Monorail locations. This initiative is a collaboration between Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL) and Honda Power Pack Energy India Pvt Ltd, and was launched just ahead of World Environment this project, Honda's advanced E: swap technology has been installed at 25 Metro stations on Lines 2A (Yellow Line) and 7 (Red Line), as well as six Monorail stations. These battery-swapping kiosks allow users of Honda-compatible electric two- and three-wheelers to quickly exchange their depleted Mobile Power Pack for a fully charged one in less than two minutes. This system eliminates the long wait times associated with traditional charging and helps tackle range anxiety, making EV use much more convenient for daily commuters, delivery personnel, and fleet of searching for charging points or waiting for hours, riders can now simply stop at a designated Metro or Monorail station, swap their batteries, and continue their journey without interruption. Stations like Gundavali, Andheri West, Malad West, Dahisar East, Goregaon East, and Monorail stops such as Chembur, Wadala, Naigaon, and Mint Colony are among the locations equipped with these facilities. This initiative not only supports environment-friendly commuting but also brings economic benefits. MMMOCL expects to generate about Rs 30 lakh in non-fare box revenue from this partnership, helping to strengthen the financial sustainability of Mumbai's mass transit project is part of MMMOCL's broader Electric Vehicle Policy, approved at its 29th board meeting under the leadership of Metropolitan Commissioner and MMMOCL Chairman Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee. Dr. Mukherjee emphasised that this partnership with Honda is a significant step towards creating a sustainable, low-emission urban environment and building future-ready public transport the first E: swap station already operational at Dahisar East, Mumbai is now among the first Indian cities to integrate battery swapping with its public transport network, setting an example for sustainable mobility across the country.

Jagan Mohan Reddy accuses police torture of youth in Guntur district, slams public assault

New Delhi: YSRCP chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Tuesday launched a scathing attack against the Guntur district police, accusing them of 'torturing' three youth over three days and threatening them with electric shocks. Reddy visited the family of Chebrolu John Victor, one of the victims who was publicly assaulted by the police on April 25. e alleged the three youth—Victor, Karimullah, and Doma Rakesh—were humiliated by being made to sit on the road and beaten with batons in full public view. A video of the incident, which surfaced on May 26, triggered widespread outrage. It showed policemen kicking and stamping on the victims, sparking sharp criticism over police excesses. Reddy claimed that the youth were targeted for questioning a local constable who allegedly tried to take Victor's phone and motorcycle keys. The YSRCP leader further alleged that a group of policemen picked up Chebrolu John Victor and Karimullah from Mangalagiri on April 25 and beat them while transporting them to Tenali. Both were detained at a police station that night, where they were subjected to further custodial violence. The following day, they were publicly assaulted on a roadside in the Ithanagar area of Tenali, near a police station. The opposition leader also alleged that, after three days of continuous torture, the police planted a knife in Victor's pocket and summoned two local village revenue officers (VROs) to falsely document that Victor was carrying a deadly weapon. He said a fabricated attempt-to-murder case was subsequently registered against the trio at the behest of the same constable they had earlier confronted. On April 28, Reddy said the police produced the trio in a local court. He urged people to join a protest on June 4, which the YSRCP plans to observe as 'Betrayal day,' marking one year of the TDP-led government in office. Reddy said the police was acting as 'collection agents' for TDP leaders, extorting kickbacks from sectors like liquor, sand, mining, and clubs. He further claimed that false cases are being indiscriminately filed against former YSRCP ministers, MLAs, party leaders, and grassroots workers as part of a larger political vendetta. Meanwhile, TDP MLA N Anand Babu hit back at Reddy, saying he should be ashamed of defending alleged ganja (marijuana) dealers, drug peddlers, and criminal gangs. 'When YSRCP MLC Anantha Babu murdered a Dalit driver named Subrahmanyam and had his body delivered at the doorstep, Jagan didn't even react,' Babu told reporters, recalling a case during the YSRCP regime.
