Why didn't the Broncos sign Von Miller?

USA Today2 days ago
Von Miller agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Washington Commanders earlier this week. Terms of the deal are not yet known, which is probably a sign that it's a team-friendly deal (agents are often quick to publicize the details of player-friendly contracts).
If the assumption that Miller did not receive a massive salary is accurate, the Denver Broncos probably could have afforded to sign him (OverTheCap.com estimates Denver has more than $12.6 million in salary cap space). So, why didn't the Broncos sign Miller for the 2025 season?
Miller has made it clear that he loves the team and wants to retire as a Bronco, so it's clearly not a matter of the player not being interested in a reunion. Instead, it seems to be a matter of numbers.
Denver already has Nik Bonitto (a second-team All-Pro last year) and Jonathon Cooper (who totaled 10.5 sacks last year, more than Miller has recorded in any year since 2018). The Broncos also used a third-round pick to select Jonah Ellis last year, and he was productive as a rotational rookie with five sacks. Denver also found a UFL gem in Dondrea Tillman last spring, and he also recorded five sacks last fall.
So the top four pass rusher spots are set, and the Broncos used a fourth-round draft pick to select Que Robinson in April. Denver also signed high-profile undrafted free agent pass rusher Johnny Walker. That's at least five and possibly six outside linebackers who could end up on the 53-man roster.
The Broncos' rotational pass rushers also play on special teams, and Miller has acknowledged that's not something he's looking to do at 36 years old (and it wouldn't make sense to ask him to). At this point in his career, Miller is a luxury piece -- a situation pass rusher who makes sense for a contender that doesn't have a packed depth chart at his position.
Denver's OLB room is packed, and the team wants to continue developing its young pass rushers. So while Miller will undoubtedly return to retire as a Bronco one day, there just wasn't room for him on the squad in 2025.

Sports Fans Saddened By Barron Trump's Announcement

Sports Fans Saddened By Barron Trump's Announcement originally appeared on The Spun. The President of the United States continues to get invested in the sports world. On Sunday, President Trump, 79, announced that he wants the Washington Commanders and Cleveland Guardians to "immediately" return to their old names, the Redskins and Indians, respectively. President Trump made his demand on his social media platform, Truth Social. He referred to the Washington Commanders as the Washington "Whatevers." "The Washington 'Whatever's' should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a big clamoring for this. Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past. Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them. Times are different now than they were three or four years ago. We are a Country of passion and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!" he wrote on Truth Social. But while President Trump is getting involved in the sports world, his youngest son, Barron Trump, does not appear to be doing the same. Barron Trump, a 6-foot-7 freshman at NYU, was reportedly asked by some classmates if he wanted to play pickup basketball. He reportedly told them that he was not "allowed" to play pickup hoops on campus. It's a sad admission. 'He's sort of like an oddity on campus,' Kaya Walker, the president of NYU College Republicans, told Vanity Fair. 'He goes to class, he goes home.' Sports fans are saddened by the announcement. Barron Trump played soccer growing up and he was reportedly quite good. He could be an impact player for an intramural basketball team at NYU, that's for sure. "She needs to working on turning Barron into a hooper," one fan wrote of Melania Trump. "Been saying Barron should've been a hooper," one fan added. "He better be a hooper next year," one fan added. It'd be nice to hear of Barron Trump's intramural performances next year, if he's actually allowed to play. Trump threatens Washington Commanders' stadium plans if franchise doesn't change name

The Washington Commanders have had a busy offseason. They've traded for left tackle Laremy Tunsil and wide receiver Deebo Samuel to bolster one of the top offenses in the NFL from a year ago. On defense, they added decorated pass rusher Von Miller in free agency. There's been news off the field as well with the franchise announcing plans to build a new stadium in Washington D.C. The franchise hopes to build on the site of RFK Memorial Stadium where the team played from 1961 to 1996 and is two miles east of the U.S. Capitol building. Washington may be facing a challenge as well from the highest-ranking elected official in the country. President Trump posted on Truth Social that he may restrict the team from building on the old RFK Stadium site if it doesn't change its name. "I may put a restriction on them that if they don't change the name back to the original 'Washington (name),' and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, 'Washington Commanders,' I won't make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington," Trump posted. He continued: "The Team would be much more valuable, and the Deal would be more exciting for everyone." He went on to state that the Cleveland Guardians should do the same and change the franchise name back to its former name. Washington also faces some question marks with getting that deal with Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser needing to get approval from the D.C. Council. "I would put my level of concern – because when you're a big city mayor you're concerned about everything – I'll put it at a four [out of five]," Bowser said earlier this month. Washington started out as the Boston Braves back in 1932 before changing its name in 1933. The franchise kept its now-former name when it relocated from Boston to Washington D.C. in 1937 and it remained for decades. WASHINGTON UNIFORMS: Commanders reveal alternate uniforms that nod to their Super Bowl glory In July 2020, the franchise dropped the name and logo. "We are announcing we will be retiring the (former) name and logo upon completion of this review," the team said in a statement at the time and that team officials were "working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years." The franchise went by the name Washington Football Team for the 2020 and 2021 NFL seasons before rebranding as the Washington Commanders ahead of the 2022 season. This isn't the first time Trump's voiced his dislike for the Commanders name. When asked about the stadium plans earlier in July, Trump said he wouldn't have changed the name in the first place. "It just doesn't have the same, it doesn't have the same ring to me," he said. 'But, you know, winning can make everything sound good. So if they win, all of a sudden the Commanders sounds good, but I wouldn't have changed the name.' A new stadium is one of the top priorities of the Commanders' new ownership group led by Josh Harris. That group finished a deal to buy the team in May 2023 and are hoping to finish construction by the 2030 NFL season. In the meantime, the team would continue to play its home games at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland. The team has not released a statement in response to Trump's comments at time of publishing. Indiana Fever update Caitlin Clark injury status, availability vs New York Liberty

With the 2025 WNBA All-Star break concluded, the Indiana Fever provided an injury status update to star Caitlin Clark entering their Tuesday night matchup against the New York Liberty from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Clark, who suffered a right groin injury late in the Fever's July 15 victory over the Connecticut Sun, missed Indiana's blowout loss against the Liberty last Wednesday and opted out of the entire All-Star weekend to focus on her recovery. According to head coach Stephanie White, the Fever do not anticipate Clark being made available when they take the floor in Brooklyn on Tuesday. "I haven't seen C [Clark] since the game last night, but I think she's progressing. I think that we're continuing to address everything that needs to be addressed. She's going to see some doctors and get some more tests done early in the week. "I don't expect her to be available on Tuesday, so we're just going to continue to take it one day at a time and let her get her evaluation early this week. Once we've done that, hopefully we'll have more of a clear mind of what it looks like," White said of Clark's status. With Clark most likely unavailable for Indiana, the team will need to rely heavily on Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston to bear the load on offense with impactful contributions off the bench for the time being. Indiana's Tuesday night clash with New York will tip off at 7 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN.
