American tourists in popular vacation spot face increased risk of being killed, robbed
Officials are warning Americans to "exercise increased caution" when traveling to a popular summer tourist destination in light of violent crime rates and a lack of law enforcement resources throughout the country.
The United States Department of State has issued an updated travel advisory for the Dominican Republic, according to the agency's website.
"Violent crime is a concern in the Dominican Republic despite more police presence in areas often visited by tourists," the department said in a statement. "Do not display wealth and be wary of meeting individuals from online in secluded locations."
The warning, which previously listed the Caribbean vacation destination as a Level 2 advisory, was posted on June 12 following a periodic update, according to a State Department spokesperson.
Countries are assigned advisories from Level 1-4 based on the area's risk factors, such as civil unrest and natural disasters.
A Level 2 advisory is considered mid-level and advises travelers to "exercise increased caution" while traveling abroad, according to the State Department. A Level 3 advisory cautions visitors to "reconsider travel," while a Level 4 advises against traveling altogether.
The warning also noted that "criminals are rarely caught and prosecuted," with instances of robbery, homicide and sexual assault prevalent throughout the country.
The State Department encourages visitors to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program and make a plan for emergency situations.
In a security report released in December 2024, the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) pointed to the Dominican Republic's heightened levels of organized crime, such as drug trafficking and money laundering.
"The wide availability of weapons, the use of drugs, and the developing criminal justice system all contribute to the high level of criminality in the country," the OSAC previously said in a December 2024 security report, adding that "a lack of law enforcement resources, poorly paid and trained police officers, and corruption exacerbate the situation."

10 pounds of marijuana, $22K in cash seized from bust of Macomb County hookah shops
The Macomb County Sheriff's Office seized about 10 pounds of marijuana and arrested two people in connection with a drug bust of a pair of hookah and tobacco shops. On Monday, members of the Macomb County Sheriff's Enforcement Team served search warrants at Area 51 Hookah and Tobacco shops in Clinton Township and Mount Clemens, as well as at a home on Holland Avenue in Eastpointe. Authorities say they seized about 600 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, approximately 10 pounds of marijuana, two rifles with magazines, three pistols with magazines and $22,756 in cash, as well as a Jeep Wagoneer and a Chevrolet Silverado. A 44-year-old Eastpointe man and a 33-year-old Clinton Township man were arrested. The two men are lodged at the Macomb County Jail and are expected to be arraigned Tuesday.

IHG to Debut Kimpton Brand in Malaysia
The Singapore Tourism Board said there were 1.37 million tourist arrivals in May, up 7.6% year-over-year. That brings the year-to-date total to 7.09 million visitors, up 2.3% in the first five months of the year versus those same five months in 2024. China retained its position as the top source market from January to May, but still only at 91.2% of 2019 levels. The top five source markets in May were China, with 242,010; Indonesia, with 197,800; and India, with 154,400. Of the 7.09 million visitors in the first five months of 2025, 73.6%, or 5.22 million, were the important overnight visitors. That represents 87.9% of that result in 2019. The World Travel & Tourism Council is predicting a record-breaking year for Singapore's international arrivals, potentially reaching almost 16 million visitors. That would be up 9.6% over 2019. IHG Hotels & Resorts announced it will debut its luxury lifestyle brand, Kimpton, in Malaysia with the opening of Kimpton Naluria Kuala Lumpur in Q4 2025. The new landmark will be within the Tun Razak Exchange, Malaysia's first international financial district and Kuala Lumpur's Central Business District. Namhae County in South Korea announced that construction of the Sol Beach Namhae Hotel and Resort, a major private investment project led by Daemyung Sono Group, is nearly complete and set to open on July 5th. The project started full-scale construction in 2023 and was 98% complete at the end of May. The resort includes a 451-room hotel and facilities such as an infinity pool, banquet hall, year-round ice rink, and various dining and leisure spaces.

Vance Boelter , 57, was charged with federal murder and stalking, along with state charges, following a nearly two-day search that culminated in his capture in the woods near his home.
