‘You look hot,' she told the Italian stranger. For both of them, it was love at first sight
It was summer 2022 and California-based model Ambika Mathur was 'feeling kind of stagnant' after breaking up with her partner and moving back in with her parents.
The Netflix show, 'Emily in Paris,' inspired her to set off on her own European adventure, which is how weeks later she found herself cat-sitting in Milan.
Then, out of the blue, came an invite to a party on the Amalfi Coast. That's how she opened the door to an intriguing fellow guest.
'He was glowing and glistening,' she says of the Italian man, 'all tan and blue eyes.' Within days they were talking about marriage.
Here's what happened next.
There was an immediate attraction, too, when American Kerri Cunningham met Hugh Grant-haired Brit Dirk Stevens on a ferry to France in the summer of 1993. The problem was, they were only teenagers on vacation with their families.
More than a quarter of a century after their teen romance had concluded and their lives were overtaken by marriage, bereavement and family ups and downs, they reunited in Ireland.
'It felt like some divine intervention that we were there for each other,' says Kerri. Before she left for the airport to return to the States, Dirk asked her, 'Maybe we can make this work?'
British pubs have their own set of unwritten rules that it pays for international visitors to know.
For example, flat-roofed pubs should be approached with caution, bags of crisps (not potato chips) must be split open on the table, and warning bells ring out twice at the end of the night.
Find out more in our 21st-century guide to the great British boozer.
One chain of 800 British pubs requires further introduction for outsiders. Wetherspoon pubs are a cult-like institution in the UK, both among admirers, who love the real ale and 'pub grub' sold at incredibly low prices, and detractors, who see them as everything that's wrong with the country at large.
Here's the astounding story of the 'Spoons' empire.
At the other end of the scale, and on the northern edge of the island, Scotland's 'ghost' whisky distilleries are coming back to life. The reborn Port Ellen distillery on the Isle of Islay offers a luxury visitor experience, which includes, surprisingly, Chinese tea service.
California man Cameron Mofid has struggled with obsessive compulsive disorder since childhood, but the one thing that's helped him cope is traveling the world.
Earlier this year, he became one of a handful of people in the world to have visited all 195 UN-recognized countries and territories.
'Visiting every country wasn't just about geography,' he tells CNN. 'It was about learning how to live with uncertainty, find calm in discomfort, and connect with people from every walk of life.'
Music is the message for Danny Kean, who has been traversing North America for 20 years, improvising on a piano in the back of his pickup. On each of his outings, he invites passersby to tickle the ivory for themselves.
'I love the idea of strangers becoming less afraid of each other,' he says. 'This love for humanity drives me to keep doing good.'
Writer Kim Davis lost 10 years of her life to illness, injury and personal tragedies, which spurred her to seize the moment and set off to travel the world for a year.

Giada De Laurentiis says she cried after this famed chef credited her success to 'big boobs' in cookbook foreword
In a recent interview, the Food Network star said her editor had to completely rewrite the introduction before her 2005 debut cookbook was published. Giada De Laurentiis recently recalled crying after she read the disparaging comments that, she says, chef Mario Batali wrote about her in a foreword for her first cookbook. The Italian-born chef, cookbook author and Food Network regular joined host Samah Dada on her YouTube show On the Menu on July 29. In a clip from the episode shared on TikTok on Aug. 11, De Laurentiis told Dada she had a story about a person she was 'not supposed to talk about' but was 'going to.' That person was Batali, who De Laurentiis worked with at the Food Network early in her culinary career. De Laurentiis explained that she had asked Batali to write a foreword to her first cookbook, Everyday Italian, which debuted in 2005, as Batali was 'a legend in the Italian space' at the time. She said his 'stamp of approval' would have been 'huge' for her, and she was happy when he agreed to write it. 'When I read it, I cried because I realized, 'Oh, he's basically saying that I've gotten to where I've gotten, and I've had this little bit of success that I had, because I have big boobs, and that if he had boobs, he would even be much further,'' De Laurentiis recalled. 'Because I'm like, a joke, right? Like, to him, it was like a little bit of a joke.' De Laurentiis said she called her editor 'in tears,' knowing she could not use what Batali allegedly wrote in the intro of her book. Her editor said they would rewrite his foreword and send it to him for approval, which they did. 'So we rewrote it, but I will never forget that,' she said. 'That's basically what a lot of people figured: cute girl with big boobs, so that's why they're watching her.' The final version of De Laurentiis's foreword is flattering toward the author and focuses on her talents in the art of Italian cuisine. 'It turns out that Giada is smart, Italian-speaking, and family-oriented — the three qualities my grandma hoped I'd find in a girl to marry. (Too late for that.) She's also a great cook, highly knowledgeable about food, and a huge amount of fun to be around — the three qualities I'd hope to find in a television partner,' Batali's foreword reads. Batali has not commented on De Laurentiis's account of what he wrote. Batali is a famed American chef, known for his Italian cooking style. He previously had multiple restaurants across the globe and was a co-host of ABC's The Chew from 2011 to 2017. In 2017, Batali was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women in an article on the food website Eater. Following the allegations, Batali stepped away from his restaurant empire and was asked by ABC to take leave from the talk show. In 2018, De Laurentiis appeared on the podcast Eater Upsell and stated that she was not surprised to learn of the allegations against Batali. 'I did not have those exact experiences with him, but it doesn't come as a huge shock,' she said at the time. 'Anybody who's ever hung out with Mario knows he's a very charismatic person,' she continued. 'We drink too much and sometimes … I'm not legitimizing it by any means. I know I've been through my own issues in this business. I think any woman in any business goes through stuff. It's just sad, you know? It's time, but it's also sad. It's a combo, and I think we all feel both.' Solve the daily Crossword

Antony Starr Bids Farewell to Homelander as THE BOYS Wraps Final Season: 'We Created a Monster' — GeekTyrant
After years of gleefully wreaking havoc as one of the most unhinged characters in modern television, Antony Starr has officially hung up the cape. With The Boys wrapping production on its fifth and final season, Starr took to Instagram to reflect on his journey playing the terrifying and twisted Homelander. 'Difficult (for me) to put into words what an incredible ride this has been. How much life and growth has occurred. How amazing the team is. It's truly been the highlight of my career,' Starr wrote. 'When we began, I had no idea what was coming. This juggernaut left the station and never stopped. Except for that Covid moment. Oh and the strikes. That was a thing too. 'But apart from those two times, it never stopped, boldly making its mark on the television landscape. There's nothing else like it. It lives in its own lane.' Starr shared a handful of behind-the-scenes photos and thanked just about everyone who made the show possible. 'To the incredible Canadian crew. The amazing production team. The insanely talented cast. 'The people at Amazon and Sony that took a chance on this insane thing (and made the great choice in casting me😂) and all the other people that contributed in some way, big or small, to this beautiful, complex, warped, delicious show.' Homelander has been one of TV's most compelling villains, and Starr clearly relished every moment of portraying him. 'This complicated character allowed the space and range to discover and push boundaries in a way I never expected and I will always be grateful for this experience,' he said. He also gave a heartfelt nod to showrunner Eric Kripke, saying, 'We created a monster, sir. And I will miss him, and you. Til we roll out the last season. When I'll see you. But this creative chapter is closed, and I'll miss it, brother.' And of course, there was a shoutout to the fans: 'Massive thank you to the fans. You are the life blood. Without you, we don't get to do this. And our fans are second to none. Mad love to you…. and deepest respect for your taste.' He signed off with: 'Okidoke people. We cooked for the last time. Can't wait to show you what we made. TIL that day, Homelander, signing off.' The Boys debuted in 2019 and quickly became a major hit for Amazon Prime Video, earning critical acclaim and multiple Emmy nominations including Outstanding Drama Series. While Season 5 won't arrive until next year, fans can dive back into the twisted world of supes with the second season of the spinoff series Gen V , which premieres September 17. So get ready one last time. The final chapter of The Boys is coming, and Homelander's going out with a bang.
