University launches cutting-edge degree to equip students for global challenges: 'The world is changing around them'
The University of Sussex was quick to respond. Starting in 2026, it will be offering the United Kingdom's first bachelor's degree for climate justice. It aims to educate students on "climate politics, activism, and environmental human rights," per the Guardian.
Formally named the Bachelor of Arts in Climate Justice, Sustainability, and Development, the degree aligns with the university's existing values. It has a forest food garden on campus, which, according to the Students' Union, "mimics a young forest with a number of edible plants" and will be incorporated into prospective students' coursework.
Tending to the garden is just one portion of the program's more practical education.
Will Lock, an anthropology lecturer and degree co-convenor, teaches an environmental justice module focused on public communication. He told the Guardian, "Rather than having a 5,000-word essay at the end of the module, we have a podcast that students are working on in groups … "
The goal is to help students explain complex case studies to wider audiences outside the climate sphere. This module will also be incorporated into the new degree.
The University of Sussex is taking notes from Future Forum's survey. Students criticized current climate education in U.K. secondary schools, claiming that the general stats and science they learned seemed too far removed from their own lives. They wanted more hands-on courses that showed climate education's relevance in their day-to-day.
Lock saw where they were coming from. "Now the world is changing around them, and it feels urgent … " he told the Guardian. "They feel like they want to be involved."
In a world where extreme weather events are rapidly intensifying and endangered species are near total collapse, it's easy to feel hopeless. The University of Sussex isn't the only institution using climate education as a solution.
In an interview with the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Professor Fernando Reimers, author of the book "Education and Climate Change," said, "Too many of our youth experience unproductive and debilitating anxiety about climate change." He cited climate education as a necessary component of cultivating hope.

On a more practical level, it will also train students for the changing job market. The University of Sussex's renowned Development Studies Association found that those with "green skills" were more likely to find jobs than those without. It calls this education "crucial for policymakers, NGOs, activists, and businesses."
The University of Sussex is proud to be at the forefront of this growing field. One proud alumnus, upon learning about the new degree, said he wasn't surprised. "This is awesome!"

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard stumbled in an appearance on Fox News when offered a layup to explain why she has accused the Obama administration of a 'treasonous conspiracy.' Trump's intelligence chief claims top Obama officials manufactured intelligence that Russia meddled in the 2016 election to frame her boss and has referred her findings to the Justice Department to pursue criminal charges. But in an appearance on Fox News, when asked about her claim that she has 'irrefutable evidence' that former President Barack Obama was the mastermind, Gabbard on Tuesday delivered a garbled word salad of an answer. 'What is that irrefutable evidence for our viewers tonight?' pressed conservative host Laura Ingraham. 'Laura, you know, as you were playing those clips of these people like Morning Joe seemingly befuddled saying that by no account is any of this true, I would challenge them to see if they have actually read the documents, every single page of the documents that we've released over the last couple of weeks,' Gabbard said. She then plugged the website where the DNI has been posting documents, claiming: 'It's all right there for anyone to see.' What Gabbard did not deliver in her response was that 'irrefutable evidence,' instead resorting to the blanket accusations she has been making for weeks. 'Those who go in and read this will see how President Obama directed that a National Security Council meeting be called to talk about Russia,' Gabbard said. She went on to say that the report that came out of the meeting was filled with tasks directed by the president to former CIA Director John Brennan and others in the intelligence community. Gabbard argued that, 'they were tasked to create an intelligence assessment that detailed how Moscow tried to influence the election, not if but how, and this was the beginning of this manufactured intelligence assessment.' The DNI also argued that Obama officials 'knowingly wrote things in this assessment that were false.' She did not point to any specific evidence to back her claim that they knew specifically new information was 'false' despite weeks of peddling her accusations. Gabbard has been posting documents on the DNI government website for weeks, including emails from Obama administration officials as well as a declassified House report written by Republican staff. The findings all show that Russia was not able to specifically hack the U.S. election infrastructure and change votes, but Moscow did carry out a campaign to influence the 2016 election. The emails discuss how Russia meddled in the election, but there is no evidence that officials knowingly wrote in the assessment information they knew was false or that the president was a mastermind behind 'manufactured' intelligence. The separate declassified report from House Republicans on Russian election interference that Gabbard released also found that Russia interfered in the U.S. election. Where that report did not align with other bipartisan assessments was that the meddling was done specifically to help Donald Trump. However, Gabbard has accused Obama officials of trying to 'subvert' Trump's presidency and carrying out a years-long 'coup.' Attorney General Pam Bondi has taken Gabbard's claims and run with them. She ordered a grand jury to potentially hear evidence in the case. On Tuesday, Gabbard confirmed on Fox News that the Justice Department was asking for more documents, further undermining Gabbard's own claim that she had already delivered 'irrefutable evidence.' Gabbard said she spoke with DOJ investigators, and they were committed to leaving 'no stone unturned' but had more questions. Obama's office issued a rare statement in response to the Trump administration's accusations when Gabbard first started making them. His office called them 'bizarre' and a distraction.

'We will send you packing': Govt vows to deport foreign criminals immediately after sentencing
Foreign criminals will be deported from the UK immediately after they are sentenced, the justice secretary has said. The law change proposed by Shabana Mahmood could save taxpayers an average of £54,000 a year per prison place. The changes would apply to prisoners serving fixed-term "determinate" sentences. Authorities would also retain their power not to deport a criminal but instead keep them in custody - with examples including if an offender is planning further crimes against the UK's interests or national security. The justice secretary's announcement goes further than a change to the law in June - expected to come into force in September - meaning prisoners face deportation rather than the current 50%. The government will need parliament to greenlight its proposal to bring this down to 0%. Foreign national offenders make up around 12% of the prison population. Ms Mahmood said: "Our message is clear - if you abuse our hospitality and break our laws, we will send you packing." She added: "Deportations are up under this government, and with this new law they will happen earlier than ever before." Almost 5,200 foreign national offenders have been deported since July 2024, a 14% increase on the 12 months prior, according to the government.
