Panthers' Jesse Puljujarvi suspended 2 games for headshot

Reuters17-04-2025

April 17 - Florida Panthers forward Jesse Puljujarvi received a two-game suspension Thursday for an illegal check to the head of Tampa Bay Lightning forward Mitchell Chaffee.
Puljujarvi had a disciplinary hearing with the NHL on Thursday after being assessed a match penalty in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Lightning.
His hit on Chaffee came with 11:32 remaining in the third period. Chaffee took the puck in the offensive zone before being blindsided with a shoulder to the head by Puljujarvi. Chaffee crumpled to the ice as a scrum ensued between the teams.
With the Panthers' regular season over, Puljujarvi's suspension will cover the first two games of Florida's playoff series with the Lightning. Game 1 is Tuesday and Game 2 is next Thursday, both in Tampa, Fla.
Puljujarvi, 26, was playing in just his fifth game with Florida after joining the team's AHL club on a professional tryout in February. He played in 26 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins before having his contract terminated. He has 10 points (four goals, six assists) on the season in 31 games.
The former No. 4 overall pick of Edmonton in the 2016 draft has 128 points (58 goals, 70 assists) in 387 career games with the Oilers (2016-23), Carolina Hurricanes (2023), Penguins (2023-25) and Panthers.

FIFA World Cup to be guarded by ICE and DHS agents as fans are warned to expect ‘suited and booted' security

FIFA Club World Cup will be guarded by 'suited and booted' ICE and DHS agents, officials have warned. The mammoth event's opening ceremony takes place at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday. 4 4 4 The countdown is officially on until the FIFA Club World Cup kicks off, with a curtain-raiser between Inter Miami and a team from Egypt, Al Ahly. The Department of Homeland Security has revealed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) personnel will provide security at the game. On its Facebook account, CBP posted last week: 'Let the games begin. "The first #FIFAClubWorldCup games start on June 14th in Miami, FL at the Hard Rock Stadium. "CBP will be suited and booted and ready to provide security for the first round of games. #CBPxFIFA #FootballUnitesTheWorld.' The post has since been deleted. However, NBC said the post had prompted questions about whether the presence of federal agents was "just part of the overall security team, which is normal for a big event?" This follows demonstrations nationwide, including Dallas and Austin in Texas, and Chicago and New York, after federal immigration raids arrested dozens of workers in Los Angeles. It also comes as Donald Trump continues his huge immigration crackdown and travel ban. And Vice President JD Vance last month warned World Cup travellers not to overstay their welcome. The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will see the World's best players decide which club is the greatest The broadcaster said it was not clear whether the agents will also be checking papers and detaining fans arriving for the game. FIFA today held a press conference to publicise the Club World Cup - the winning side of which will earn up to $125 million. NBC noted, "It's obvious that Fifa would rather focus on the games instead of outside issues." FIFA president Gianni Infantino urged fans to buy tickets despite concerns about the presence of federal agents. He told fans, 'Be part of history, football is such an important sport all over the world. we'll have billions of people watching this from home who would love to come and attend.' BOOSTING SECURITY Infantino was asked whether he had any concerns about ICE and border officials being present at the games. He replied, 'No I don't have any concerns on anything in the sense that we are very attentive on any security questions. "Most important for us is to guarantee security for our fans who will come to the games, this is our priority.' The station stressed that it is normal for local police to partner with federal counterparts and law enforcement agents to provide security at big events. The broadcaster said it had spoken to ICE agents - who had confirmed its officials will be at the games - to provide security. NBC - citing ICE advice - told viewers intending on attending games that all non-American citizens need to carry proof of their legal status. This is particularly vital after the debacle last year, when 7,000 unticketed supporters broke into the Copa America final. Some fans climbed over fences, while others were incredibly seen trying to enter via a ventilation system at the Hard Rock Stadium. More on the Club World Cup 2025 The Club World Cup 2025 will begin on Sunday, June 15, in the UK and Saturday, June 14, in the US. The tournament will run until Sunday, July 13. It is being held across 12 different cities and stadiums in the United States. The whole tournament will be broadcast by DAZN in the UK and US. Matches can be watched on DAZN TV or via the website/app. In the UK, Channel 5 will also air select games on terrestrial TV. But, Thomas Kennedy of the Florida Immigrant Coalition said the federal agents' now-deleted social media warning had caused confusion. He said, 'The messaging that CBP is using is a bit cryptic. "It's sort of alluding that people should have their paperwork in order to attend the games. 'It creates an environment where people are less likely to come watch the games because of just sheer intimidation.' When asked about the security arrangement, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said, 'We're here to make sure people are safe, that's our focus, to work with all of the law enforcement personnel, our safety personnel, and make sure they have a seamless experience." 4

Jaguars WR Brian Thomas Jr. 'fine' after injury scare

June 11 - Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. is "fine" after he absorbed a hard fall during practice at minicamp, head coach Liam Coen said Wednesday. Thomas appeared to injure his shoulder following a collision with cornerback Tyson Campbell during team drills. Thomas exited the field with trainers before returning to the sideline, however he did not go back into practice. "He's fine. He absolutely could've gone back and played -- just bruised it a little bit," Coen said. "Said he had great range of motion, strength. He's all good. No issues, just precautionary. "(If) he didn't come back out, he'd be really hurt. He was completely cleared to play." Thomas, 22, recorded 87 catches for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns in 17 games (16 starts) in his rookie season last year. He was selected by the Jaguars with the 23rd overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft. --Field Level Media

Jack Grealish is left out of Man City's Club World Cup squad - along with Kyle Walker - as £114m of new talent is included

Jack Grealish 's absence from Manchester City 's squad for the Club World Cup has been confirmed after Pep Guardiola 's side announced their 27-man travelling party. City will head to the United States for the start of their tournament, which begins on June 18 against Moroccan side Wydad. They will also play Juventus and Al Ain in the group stage. The transfer window ahead of the tournament has been closed as of 7pm BST on June 10, with some clubs scrambling to make moves to bolster their squads for the competition. City, who will be based in Florida, did just that, bringing in Ryan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli ahead of Wednesday's deadline. All four of those players will travel, but England duo Grealish and Walker were notable absentees from the options Guardiola will have to choose from in the States. Grealish is understood to have been left out so he can find a new club to join this summer. Guardiola has already acknowledged he may leave, and England manager Thomas Tuchel has told the forward that he must be playing more often in order to earn a call-up. Grealish started only seven times in what was a poor season for City by their own standards. While he has two years remaining on his £300,000-a-week contract, a repeat would do neither City nor the player any favours. Clubs in England and Europe are expected to be interested in the playmaker, although the fact that many are grappling with profit and sustainability issues may point to the likelihood of a loan deal, rather than a permanent move for a man who cost City £100m when he signed from Aston Villa for a British record fee in 2021. After Grealish was left out of City's final Premier League fixture at Fulham, Guardiola said that officials would work with Grealish and his representatives to find a solution that suited both sides. Walker, meanwhile, won't play for City again after leaving the club on loan in January, joining AC Milan. His contract runs until the end of next season, but it is understood he will leave this summer after he fathered two children with Lauryn Goodman while being married to Annie Kilner. City have, meanwhile, included nearly £114million worth of fresh blood in their squad after their four signings in their first transfer window of the summer. Left back Air Nouri was the first player through the door, with the former Premier League champions forking out £33.7m to sign the Algeria international from Wolves. Ryan Cherki arrived from Lyon for £34m and will bolter Guardiola's attacking midfield options Elsewhere, Bettinelli joined from Chelsea on deadline day for a small fee, along with the arrivals of Cherki and Reijnders. The former joined from Lyon for £34m and is expected to add depth in City's attacking midfield area. Reijnders, a deeper midfielder, signed on the dotted line for £46m, arriving from AC Milan. Grealish, meanwhile, has hit out at critics of his form. Responding to a post from talkSPORT which claimed that Villa favourite Gabby Agbonlahor is 'not happy' with Guardiola for unfairly treating Grealish, the winger wrote: 'What u want me to do score a [hat-trick] in 20 [minutes]?' He also waded into a discussion between two users discussing his form for City this term. 'Dude, Jack has been bad lately and I'm not surprised Pep did that,' wrote one user on X. Another replied: 'Lately? Lol, been too long to be called lately. Let these people talk s***.' The England international chimed in with a defense of his recent displays, adding: 'Haha, I've been bad lately? Score 3 goals in my last 3 appearances over 45 mins but okie dokie love x'.
