Bogus fifties found at Woodway Walgreens, man arrested

Woodway, Tx (FOX 44) – Counterfeit $50 bills used to buy a prepaid cash card in Woodway were traced back to a Waco man, leading to his arrest. Syngin Jon Chaffee was booked into the McLennan County Jail on forgery charges Wednesday after surveillance photos of the transaction were used to identify him. The original incident occurred April 5 when a man with a beard entered the Walgreens at Estates Drive and Woodway Drive and used four fifty-dollar bills to load $200 onto a prepaid card. An arrest affidavit said it was not initially noticed that the bills were counterfeit until after the transaction was complete and he had left the store. The incident was reported to the Woodway Public Safety Department by Walgreens who also provided the counterfeit bills along with the surveillance video of the transaction. The affidavit stated that after the investigator shared a still photo of the suspect in a county investigator e-mail, he got a tip on a possible ID of the man. He then searched the name on Facebook and was able to find an account and match that photo with those on the site and on a Texas ID belonging to Syngin Chaffee. Man faces animal cruelty charge after kitten thrown on roof The affidavit stated the investigator contact Chaffee who met with him at the police station. The affidavit said he gave a statement about making the transaction, but claimed he did not know the bills were counterfeit. The affidavit stated that of the four bills used in the transaction, one was real and three were bogus. Chaffee was then arrested and transported to the jail where he remained Thursday. Metrolink breaks weekend ridership record

March proved to be a historic month for Metrolink, the regional passenger rail line that services six counties in Southern California. On Thursday, Metrolink said it recorded the highest number of weekend boardings for a single month in the agency's entire history. In total, 122,693 weekenders boarded Metrolink trains in March, eclipsing the previous record figure of 117,348 set in September 2018. It's an important milestone for the rail system, which is attempting to evolve from a strictly commuter-based service to a general purpose passenger rail line. Late last year, Metrolink released an updated service schedule that includes more trains and shorter transfer windows at Los Angeles Union Station. After a 'bumpy start,' the schedule was retooled earlier this year to better accommodate existing rider schedules. Metrolink also extended its popular Student Adventure Pass, which allows students from kindergarten through college to ride for free, through at least June 2025. Deals on weekend passes, free weekend rides for kids, and the SoCal Explorer rewards program are among the coordinated efforts launched by Metrolink to attract more riders. Board Chair and Orange County Supervisor Doug Chaffee credits these 'innovative campaigns and promotions' for the record-breaking weekend ridership, and a growing and evolving customer base. 'Today's riders know that, in addition to traveling to and from work, Metrolink is a great option for exploring regional destinations like Orange County's famous beaches, visiting friends and family, and connecting with new experiences,' Chaffee said. The weekend ridership record also represents a pivotal moment in Metrolink's recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. It's the first time that the rail line has exceed a pre-pandemic milestone, officials said. Metrolink, like many transit systems and other industries, have struggled to bounce back from the steep decline brought on by the pandemic. Officials said the spring of 2020 and related COVID-19 mitigation measures brought fundamental changes to Southern California travel and transit systems. Now, five years later, Metrolink says weekend ridership has fully recovered from the pandemic. Monday-through-Friday ridership, however, still has ground to make up. Year-over-year weekday ridership was around 65% as of March, officials said. But the rail line says it continues to see recovery; overall ridership on Metrolink in March was 71% of pre-pandemic highs—the highest recovery figure to date. And since debuting its updated schedule, Metrolink says 'off peak' service has seen massive growth, up 74% year-over-year through March. Several high-profile events across Southern California in March contributed to the ridership milestone, including the International Women's Day Protest and Rally in downtown Los Angeles, Swallows Day Parade in San Juan Capistrano, and the Beyond Wonderland festival in San Bernardino. Panthers' Jesse Puljujarvi suspended 2 games for headshot

April 17 - Florida Panthers forward Jesse Puljujarvi received a two-game suspension Thursday for an illegal check to the head of Tampa Bay Lightning forward Mitchell Chaffee. Puljujarvi had a disciplinary hearing with the NHL on Thursday after being assessed a match penalty in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Lightning. His hit on Chaffee came with 11:32 remaining in the third period. Chaffee took the puck in the offensive zone before being blindsided with a shoulder to the head by Puljujarvi. Chaffee crumpled to the ice as a scrum ensued between the teams. With the Panthers' regular season over, Puljujarvi's suspension will cover the first two games of Florida's playoff series with the Lightning. Game 1 is Tuesday and Game 2 is next Thursday, both in Tampa, Fla. Puljujarvi, 26, was playing in just his fifth game with Florida after joining the team's AHL club on a professional tryout in February. He played in 26 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins before having his contract terminated. He has 10 points (four goals, six assists) on the season in 31 games. The former No. 4 overall pick of Edmonton in the 2016 draft has 128 points (58 goals, 70 assists) in 387 career games with the Oilers (2016-23), Carolina Hurricanes (2023), Penguins (2023-25) and Panthers. --Field Level Media Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles., opens new tab

Rhoden to offer new way to counter property taxes

PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — Gov. Larry Rhoden isn't saying yet what he has in mind. But he told Capitol news reporters on Thursday that he plans to suggest a new source of revenue that local governments could choose to offset rising property taxes. The Republican governor said he'll suggest it in the coming days for consideration later this year by a special task force the Legislature has established to study property taxes. Rhoden said the concept of a new revenue source came together late in the 2025 legislative session. He decided it was too late to try to jam something new through in the session's closing days. It won't be a county sales tax, however, Rhoden said. He described it as 'an alternative funding source, something that's viable, something that goes to the heart of the need in areas, understanding that the majority, the vast majority of our counties have not had issues or huge issues with owner-occupied taxes.' 'So it's a fairly targeted group,' Rhoden continued. 'And again, you know I talk about a rifle shot solution rather than a shotgun solution, and that was the problem with a lot of the legislation that failed and that I couldn't have supported, because it was affecting the entire state. I don't think people realize just how bad some of the legislation was. 'One proposal that went back to 2020, that would have been a huge, huge tax shift, and we would have been shifting taxes from the few counties that have issues onto every county in the state. So property taxes for the majority, the vast majority of the land mass in South Dakota, the taxes would have gone up as a result of that legislation,' Rhoden said. 'So there's a lot of things to be considered when you're dealing with property taxes, so many moving parts within the formula that you don't even consider — it's pretty easy to get lost in the weeds — and one of the reasons we're kind of holding off until we got a lot of that better in focus for ourselves, before we release it to that committee,' he said. The legislative task force includes a slot for the governor or his designee. Rhoden said that Kirk Chaffee will be representing him. Fire danger, severe weather and snow all possible the next 48 hours Chaffee was the longtime director of equalization in Meade County and later served as a state legislator. Rhoden said Chaffee was invaluable as an advisor when the Legislature including Rhoden worked with the Rounds administration and changed South Dakota's system of valuing agricultural property to the current production-based approach. Chaffee later served on and chaired a special oversight committee that the Legislature assigned to continue to fine tune the new approach. Rhoden joked that Chaffee would find out via news conference that Rhoden wants Chaffee's help again. Earlier Thursday, Rhoden signed into law . It's intended to reduce the growth in the assessed value of owner-occupied property, limit increases in property tax revenues, revise provisions regarding school district excess tax levies, and revise eligibility requirements for a property tax assessment freeze. The House of Representatives gave its approval 53-16 on Monday after the governor compromised on a sticking point. The Senate agreed with the House version the next day 29-6. Joining Rhoden in the Capitol rotunda for the bill-signing ceremony were some of the senators and representatives who had worked with him in developing the legislation, including Republican Rep. Trish Ladner. She has tried for years to address the challenge of rising owner-occupied property values in some growing areas of South Dakota. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
