Metrolink breaks weekend ridership record
On Thursday, Metrolink said it recorded the highest number of weekend boardings for a single month in the agency's entire history.
In total, 122,693 weekenders boarded Metrolink trains in March, eclipsing the previous record figure of 117,348 set in September 2018.
It's an important milestone for the rail system, which is attempting to evolve from a strictly commuter-based service to a general purpose passenger rail line.
Late last year, Metrolink released an updated service schedule that includes more trains and shorter transfer windows at Los Angeles Union Station. After a 'bumpy start,' the schedule was retooled earlier this year to better accommodate existing rider schedules.
Metrolink also extended its popular Student Adventure Pass, which allows students from kindergarten through college to ride for free, through at least June 2025. Deals on weekend passes, free weekend rides for kids, and the SoCal Explorer rewards program are among the coordinated efforts launched by Metrolink to attract more riders.
Board Chair and Orange County Supervisor Doug Chaffee credits these 'innovative campaigns and promotions' for the record-breaking weekend ridership, and a growing and evolving customer base.
'Today's riders know that, in addition to traveling to and from work, Metrolink is a great option for exploring regional destinations like Orange County's famous beaches, visiting friends and family, and connecting with new experiences,' Chaffee said.
The weekend ridership record also represents a pivotal moment in Metrolink's recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. It's the first time that the rail line has exceed a pre-pandemic milestone, officials said.
Metrolink, like many transit systems and other industries, have struggled to bounce back from the steep decline brought on by the pandemic. Officials said the spring of 2020 and related COVID-19 mitigation measures brought fundamental changes to Southern California travel and transit systems.
Now, five years later, Metrolink says weekend ridership has fully recovered from the pandemic.
Monday-through-Friday ridership, however, still has ground to make up. Year-over-year weekday ridership was around 65% as of March, officials said.
But the rail line says it continues to see recovery; overall ridership on Metrolink in March was 71% of pre-pandemic highs—the highest recovery figure to date. And since debuting its updated schedule, Metrolink says 'off peak' service has seen massive growth, up 74% year-over-year through March.
Several high-profile events across Southern California in March contributed to the ridership milestone, including the International Women's Day Protest and Rally in downtown Los Angeles, Swallows Day Parade in San Juan Capistrano, and the Beyond Wonderland festival in San Bernardino.

Perseus's Chairman Rick Menell praised Mr Quartermaine's outstanding contribution in leading and shaping Perseus into the company it is today, saying: ' On behalf of the Board, I would like to express my most sincere gratitude to Jeff for his leadership and guidance over the years. Jeff has transformed Perseus and has been pivotal in turning it into one of the most profitable gold producers in the world. He has built extremely solid foundations for the Company to keep growing and we cannot thank him enough for such a positive legacy .' Outgoing MD and CEO, Mr. Quartermaine said: 'It has been an honour and a privilege to have had the opportunity to serve at the helm of Perseus Mining over the past 12 years. Not only has the Company been transformed into a credible ASX 100 organisation, but during this time we have generated significant benefits for all of our stakeholders, including many in our host communities in Africa whose lives have been significantly improved through Perseus's endeavours. I am deeply indebted to all our staff, both past and present, who along with their families have given their friendship, hard work, and commitment in helping transform Perseus. Along the way we have faced a myriad of challenges including events such as the global COVID pandemic, but we have emerged stronger than ever, and the company is now well positioned to continue our success into the future. In reflecting on the last 15 years at Perseus, I must acknowledge the enormous contribution made to my career and indirectly to the success of Perseus, by my own family whose unwavering support has made the journey so much easier.' Mr. Quartermaine will be replaced as MD and CEO by Craig Jones, who will commence work with Perseus on August 18, 2025 and will assume the positions of MD and CEO with effect from October 1, 2025. Mr Jones joins Perseus with more than 25 years of global experience, having worked across Australia, Papua New Guinea (PNG), Indonesia and Canada. He was a member of Newcrest's executive team from 2012, having originally joined in 2008, and ultimately serving as Newcrest's global COO, with broad responsibility for five operating assets spread across multiple jurisdictions. In that capacity, he played a critical role in the development of organisational strategies, due diligence and investor relations. Mr Jones also led high-level engagement with governments, communities and First Nations groups across PNG, Canada and Australia. Beyond his executive roles, Mr. Jones was a Newcrest nominee director on the Boards of SolGold and Lundin Gold and was Newcrest's representative on Joint Venture Committees including the Morobe Mining Joint Venture in PNG and the Red Chris Joint Venture in British Columbia, reflecting extensive global resource-sector connectivity and governance experience. A values-driven leader recognised for enhancing safety and fostering a strong organisational culture, Mr Jones is known for his consistent, empathetic and principled leadership style, which has earned the respect of peers, governments and communities alike. Mr Menell said: 'We are delighted to welcome Craig to the Perseus team as Managing Director and CEO. Craig brings a wealth of strategic, operational and technical expertise, a deep understanding of complex operating jurisdictions and stakeholder management and a clear commitment to sustainable practices. We look forward to working with Craig and the rest of the Perseus team to bring the Company even further.' Mr. Jones will be based in Perseus's head office in Perth, Western Australia. July jobs report expected to show a labor market slowing to a crawl
Hiring is expected to show a sharp slowdown in July, even as Federal Reserve policymakers insist the labor market is still in solid shape. Nonfarm payrolls likely grew by just 100,000 for the month, according to a Dow Jones consensus estimate. That would be the lowest gain since October 2024. Payrolls rose 147,000 in June and averaged 130,000 a month in the first half of the year. The unemployment rate also is expected to nudge up to 4.2% when the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the report Friday at 8:30 a.m. ET. If the estimates are correct, it will reinforce the notion of a slowing jobs picture , though not necessarily one that will require a response from the Fed. "You do see a slowing in job creation, but also in a slowing, slowing in the supply of workers. So you've got a labor market that's in balance," Chair Jerome Powell said at a news conference Wednesday following the Fed's policy meeting that saw it hold its benchmark interest rate where it's been since December. "The labor market looks solid." Aside from the headline number, markets will pore through the report for the source of hiring. For much of the post-Covid recovery, restaurant, health care and leisure and hospitality have provided the bulk of the gains. "What I'm really looking to is the breadth of employment gains across industries," said John Velis, Americas macro strategist at BNY. "If you see cyclical industries continue to not generate jobs, and you see acyclical industries losing jobs, that's a sign that the labor market is really weakening." The monthly jobs reports have had a habit of surprising, primarily to the upside. That's what TS Lombard expects to happen Friday. The firm said high-frequency data indicators from LinkUp point to a nonfarm payrolls number that could hit 199,000.
