Proposal to ban sale of vape to be discussed in MMKN
He said Public Health and Environment Committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin had been instructed to do so following an integrated meeting held with the agencies involved.
'I have instructed that a paper be made and presented to MMKN for us to consider because any decision by the state government must be made comprehensively by looking at all aspects so that it can guarantee the health of current and future generations,' he said.
He said this at a press conference after the handover ceremony of the Raw Water Guarantee Scheme (SJAM) Package A and Package C Project here today.
Earlier, Jamaliah in a statement announced that the integrated meeting with the Menteri Besar's Office involved the Selangor State Health Department (JKNS), the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) and the Local Authorities (PBT).
According to Jamaliah, the meeting was held to obtain a comprehensive overview of the enforcement, legal and socio-economic aspects related to the sale of vape.
On April 24, the media reported that the Terengganu state government will enforce a ban on the sale of electronic cigarette products at all premises in the state starting August 1.

AEDs may be required in new development projects
A guideline is being developed in Selangor to ensure new developments are equipped with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for emergency situations. State public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said they were looking at other states that had adopted a similar guideline, including Penang. 'If we manage to enforce a clear standard on where AEDs must be available, it becomes easier for people to recognise and locate them wherever they may be. 'We are exploring how it can be implemented in phases,' she said after the handover of an AED unit from Rotary Club of Ara Damansara to Masjid Al-Makmuriah in Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara in Petaling Jaya. Jamaliah said Selangor was gathering feedback from all local councils, as each might have different processes and licensing requirements. The guidelines, she said, would apply to new buildings that fell under relevant categories, such as sports venues, public parks and places of worship. 'There have been many incidents that occur in private sports venues such as pickleball and badminton courts, so we want safety measures like AED installation to be in place. 'Heart attacks remain the leading cause of death in Malaysia. 'Every minute without cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or AED assistance reduces survival chances by about 7%.' Stating that ambulances might take five to 10 minutes to arrive at the location of the emergency, she added: 'There needs to be an initiative to help the victim before the ambulance arrives.' Jamaliah thanked some commercial premises, such as malls, that have installed AEDs on their own initiative. An AED is a portable, battery-powered device that delivers an electric shock to a person in cardiac arrest, to resuscitate the heart into beating again. When used in conjunction with CPR, it can significantly increase the chances of survival. The handover ceremony also featured a demonstration of proper usage of AED along with CPR. Jamaliah, who is Bandar Utama assemblyman, said the mosque was an ideal location for the AED as it was a key gathering point for the community. Rotary Club of Ara Damansara president Siraanjivi Ganasan said the handover concluded its 'A Lifesaver in Every Home' programme, which sought to train more Malaysians in CPR and use of AEDs. Masjid Al-Makmuriah chairman Ustaz Mhd Nadzrui Mhd Tajudin said that in the spirit of National Day, it was a reminder that saving lives transcended religion or ethnicity.

Nancy Shukri shares final stages of Malaysia's strategic care plan with focus on ageing population and long-term care services
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — The Strategic Framework and Care Action Plan in Malaysia 2026-2030, currently being developed by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), is now in its final stage of preparation. Its Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said that various engagement sessions have been held to ensure the plan aligns with the country's current and long-term needs, including the National Ageing Action Plan 2025-2045, which is currently being drafted. 'One of the key areas KPWKM will focus on is the establishment of an efficient and sustainable long-term care (LTC) service ecosystem. 'At the same time, the ministry is also planning to launch the National Action Plan for Senior Citizens 2026-2030, which will include elements such as safety and protection, lifelong learning, and intergenerational engagement and cohesion,' she said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. She was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari (PH-Gombak), who asked the ministry to state the number of informal workers registered in the care economy sector and the ministry's policies and preparations to address an ageing population. Commenting on the number of informal workers in the care economy sector, Nancy said currently, no official data has been collected on care services provided by either formal or informal carers in the country. However, she said data collection on care services will be one of the core components of the Strategic Framework and Care Action Plan 2026-2030. 'For the record, to date, KPWKM has recorded a total of 6,744 individuals who hold the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) in Care and Community Services, while another 43,869 individuals possess professional skills in child care. 'These individuals have the skills and qualifications to offer formal care services,' she said. Meanwhile, Nancy said the official data available that can be used to identify informal caregivers is based on recipients of monthly assistance provided by the Social Welfare Department (JKM). 'The government, through JKM, provides monthly welfare assistance to ease the burden of individuals caring for bedridden or critically ill family members under the Bedridden Patient Assistance scheme. As of April 2025, the government has disbursed RM59.6 million to 31,138 recipients,' she added. — Bernama

Selangor pushes for mandatory AEDs in public spaces
PETALING JAYA: Selangor is currently developing a comprehensive guideline to ensure new developments are equipped with automated external defibrillators (AEDs), says state exco member Jamaliah Jamaluddin. 'Looking ahead, the state hopes to expand the presence of AEDs by making them mandatory in key public areas,' said Jamaliah, who is state public health and environment committee chairman. 'The focus is on locations with high foot traffic and risk of cardiac incidents, such as sports venues, public parks, places of worship and recreational centres.' She observed that there had been a rise of incidents during sporting activities held at badminton and pickleball courts, hence the need for AEDs as a public safety measure. Jamaliah said Selangor is currently refining its guideline and is studying models from other states, with Penang being one of the few to have implemented something similar. 'We want to ensure the guideline is effective, as it may involve specific conditions. We are also exploring how it can be implemented in phases. 'The state government will be gathering feedback from local councils to tailor the guideline effectively,' she said, while acknowledging that each local council may have differing licensing procedures. 'The goal is to ensure proper coordination between all agencies and local councils.' Jamaliah noted that heart attacks remain the leading cause of death in Malaysia, and every minute without cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or AED intervention reduces the victim's chances of survival by approximately 7%.
