More than enough water in Selangor and Kedah, say authorities
PETALING JAYA: Seven dams in Selangor and Kedah are running low, but domestic users in the two states need not worry. There is more than enough water supply to last for months, say authorities. In fact, levels of the dams in the Klang Valley have gone up after recent rains and there is enough to last for the next 90 days, said Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. 'The Selangor Water Management Board reported that all dams in the state have reached capacities of more than 82%. 'This means all dams have sufficient water supply for the next 90 days even if there is no rain during that period. 'We also have groundwater reserves that can last us for another 60 days. 'However, we expect heavy rainfall by October when the monsoon transition occurs,' he said. Amirudin said supply had been low previously because off-river storage was used to meet the needs of a water treatment plant after pollution was detected. 'This was part of the new Raw Water Guarantee Scheme. It is aimed at preventing polluted water in the river from entering the water treatment plant,' he said. On Monday, four dams in Selangor – Langat, Sungai Selangor, Tasik Subang and Sungai Tinggi – were in the red zone. Another dam, Semenyih, was in the orange zone, which is considered a warning stage. As of yesterday, Sungai Selangor dam was at a capacity of 83%, Sungai Tinggi (82%), Langat (87%), Semenyih (99%), Batu (84%), Tasik Subang (90%), Klang Gates (92%). Sungai Labu off-river storage is at 99% capacity. In Kedah, the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (Mada) said there was ample water supply from the Pedu, Muda and Ahning dams for irrigation and domestic purposes. 'Water from the dams is being released at a rate of 3,500 cubic feet per second to meet the needs of padi cultivation in the Muda area, as well as domestic and industrial needs in Kedah and parts of southern Perlis,' it said. Current reservoir capacity at Mada's dams is 53.34% (Pedu), 33.84% (Muda) and 58.58% (Ahning). 'The 789.06mil cubic metres available yesterday is higher than the 633.42mil cubic metres on Aug 5 last year. 'We have sufficient water to meet the irrigation needs of the first main padi planting this year (in September) and for domestic and industrial needs in the Muda area,' said Mada.

Amirudin: Selangor plans RM1mil fine, jail term for polluters
KUALA LUMPUR: The Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) Enactment will be strengthened to ensure environmental polluters can be punished, including fines of up to RM1 million and mandatory imprisonment of up to three years. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said this includes adding provisions that empower state enforcement authorities to conduct thorough investigations, including prosecution. He said that although the sources of pollution were often identified, weaknesses in evidence gathering had resulted in many offenders escaping legal action. "For example, odour pollution takes between 18 and 24 hours to reach the Selangor dam. If something happens in Batang Kali, it takes about 15 to 16 hours to get here, and the evidence is gone by then. That is one of the challenges we face. "Sometimes we detect pollution, but cannot trace the source because it has already stopped – the culprit may have been 'responsible' enough to shut it down. "So, while we manage to contain the issue, unfortunately, we are unable to catch or prosecute the offender," he said when met by reporters after the handover ceremony of the Raw Water Guarantee Scheme (SJAM) Package A and C project yesterday. He also said very few polluters have been prosecuted under the amended LUAS Enactment, as the prosecution process falls under the Attorney-General's Chambers. "Some cases have been prosecuted under the Environmental Quality Act or other existing laws in the country. Investigations were conducted, and the public prosecutor carried out prosecution. "The public prosecutor has their discretion on which laws or regulations to apply, whether to use the Act or the Enactment. So far, no charges have been brought under the LUAS Enactment." Amirudin added that a comprehensive water master plan is being developed to address all issues related to water supply in Selangor. He said the plan would serve as a guideline for managing drought and excess rainfall. "The plan is expected to be completed within a year and will cover aspects such as water storage, locations of retention ponds, and long-term flood control systems, with over 100 ponds identified across the state."

MB: S'gor water plan in the pipeline
KUALA SELANGOR: Work is underway in Selangor to develop a master plan for the state's water supply such as storage and catchment pond locations. The master plan, which includes a long-term flood control system, will also function as a guideline to deal with both dry and rainy seasons, said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. 'Too little water means supply issues; too much means floods. This master plan will look comprehensively into both aspects,' he said. The plan is scheduled to be completed within a year, he told reporters yesterday after the handover ceremony of the Raw Water Guarantee Scheme (SJAM) Package A and C project to Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd. Amirudin said that more than 100 water catchment ponds have been identified throughout Selangor, with most of them currently being gazetted as storage areas. He said SJAM, which will be part of the master plan, is meant to ensure sufficient water supply for the next 50 years at least. Amirudin said the two packages would guarantee continuous water supply to four million residents in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. He said that RM320mil has been spent on SJAM to ensure water supply to 1.2 million consumer accounts.

Support PKR election allegations with evidence, not sentiment

He said the Central Election Committee (JPP) had done its best to ensure that the leadership election for the 2025-2028 term is conducted fairly and transparently. 'The JPP has already conducted re-elections in several divisions where irregularities were found, and that itself is proof that the committee is trying its best. However, allegations on the matter continue to be made by those who are disappointed or still dissatisfied. 'A full report and audit of the division-level elections has already been presented to the central leadership recently,' he said at a press conference after officiating at the handover of the Raw Water Guarantee Scheme (SJAM) Project Package A and Package C here today. Meanwhile, in Kelantan, state PKR chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Suparadi Md Noor has urged party members to be mature and not sow discord among leaders. 'Anyone can contest, but we should support leaders who are capable of driving the party forward, especially during state or national elections. 'In my view, PKR members are mature enough to vote and choose those who are truly qualified to lead,' he told reporters after the 'Jom Masuk U' programme and the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) Excellence Awards Ceremony for the Tanah Merah parliamentary constituency today. The central leadership elections on May 23 will run from 8 am to 5 pm and will be conducted using two methods: physical voting by delegates of the Central Congress, the Central Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) Congress and the Central Women's Congress, taking place at Berjaya Waterfront Hotel and Danga Bay Convention Centre in Johor Bahru. For Sabah and Sarawak, physical voting will take place at the International Technology and Commercial Centre (ITCC) in Penampang and the Penview Convention Centre in Kuching. Regular and additional delegates for the Central, Central AMK and Central Women's Congresses will not need to attend in person as voting will be conducted online at the same date and time via the ADIL app. The PKR National Congress, including the AMK and Women's Congresses, is scheduled to be held from May 22 to 24 in Johor Bahru.
