Source: Kremlin-aligned Russian news agency TASS, as reported by European Pravda
Details: Russian leader Vladimir Putin signed a decree on 6 March appointing Darchiyev as Russia's ambassador to the United States and Russia's permanent observer to the Organisation of American States in Washington.
Russia's previous ambassador to the United States ended his tenure in October 2024.
The intention to appoint ambassadors as soon as possible was announced after talks between the US and Russian delegations in Saudi Arabia on 18 February. Washington handed Moscow an agrément (a note of acceptance) for Darchiyev's appointment after another round of talks on 27 February in Istanbul.
Prior to this role, Darchiyev, 64, headed the North Atlantic Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Over his diplomatic career, Darchiyev has spent a total of 10 years working at Russia's diplomatic mission in Washington, serving as an embassy counsellor from 1997 to 2002 and as an envoy counsellor from 2005 to 2010.

China could have as many ICBMs as the US or Russia by 2030, weapons watchdog says

China could achieve parity with the US and Russia in terms of the number of intercontinental ballistic missiles it has by 2030, per an estimate by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. The European think tank said in a report on Monday that China has the world's fastest-growing nuclear arsenal. It added that the country has at least 600 nuclear warheads and has been adding about 100 warheads to its arsenal every year since 2023. Last year, SIPRI said China increased its number of nuclear warheads from 410 in 2023 to 500 at the start of 2024. SIPRI's estimate is similar to that of the Pentagon's, which said in its China Military Power Report last year that China has over 600 operational nuclear warheads. The Defense Department said China is on track to grow its arsenal to 1,000 warheads by 2030. SIPRI said in its report on Monday that China could have as many ICBMs as the US or Russia by 2030, but will lag behind in the number of warheads. It estimates that China will have a maximum number of 1,500 warheads by 2035. In comparison, the US has 5,177 warheads while Russia has 5,459, per SIPRI estimates. The countries' combined stockpile makes up almost 90% of the world's nuclear weapons. In February, President Donald Trump said he wanted to engage Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in denuclearization talks in the "not too distant future." "China is trying to catch up because they're very substantially behind, but within five or six years, they'll be even," Trump said of China's burgeoning nuclear arsenal. Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, said in a press briefing in February that China's nuclear strategy "focuses on self-defense" and it "always keeps its nuclear strength at the minimum level required by national security." The US and Russia should "make drastic and substantive cuts to their nuclear arsenals, and create necessary conditions for other nuclear-weapon states to join in the nuclear disarmament process," Guo said.

Trump: The war between Israel and Iran should end

President Trump said after a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday that the war between Israel and Iran needs to end. Why it matters: Trump's call for ending the war comes less than 48 hours after Israel launched its attacks against Iran and shows the amount of concern at the White House from the escalating fighting. What he's saying:"President Putin called this morning to very nicely wish me a Happy Birthday, but to more importantly, talk about Iran, a country he knows very well. He feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end, to which I explained, his war should also end," Trump wrote on his Truth Social account. Driving the news: The nuclear talks planned for Sunday in Muscat have been cancelled due to the Israeli attack against Iran, the foreign minister of Oman Badr al-Busaidi said. "While there will be no meeting Sunday, we remain committed to talks and hope the Iranians will come to the table soon," a U.S. official said. The fighting between Israel and Iran continued to escalate on Saturday with Israel saying the Israel Defense Forces have achieved full freedom of operation in the airspace around Iran 's capital Tehran. The White House is concerned about the escalation and is trying to press the Iranians to go back to the negotiations table. "Whatever happens today cannot be prevented. But we have the ability to negotiate a successful peaceful resolution to this conflict if Iran is willing. The fastest way for Iran to accomplish peace is to give up its nuclear weapons program," a White House official told Axios. State of play: Trump told Putin in their phone call on Saturday that White House envoy Steve Witkoff is ready to resume nuclear talks with Iran's foreign minister, the Russian president's foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said. Putin, in previous phone calls, proposed that Trump help in the nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran. Context: The current crisis between Israel and Iran will be a test case for Trump's strategy of mending relations between the U.S. and Russia in order to solve crisis around the world together. Trump and Putin both spoke on Friday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Putin spoke to Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian. Putin told both Netanyahu and Pezeshkian that he is ready to mediate between the parties to prevent further escalation of tensions, the Kremlin said. Trump also spoke on Saturday with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the war between Israel and Iran. Erdogan said he told Trump that an uncontrolled escalation in the region must be prevented. Behind the scenes: Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi told the EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Saturday that Iran will not continue its negotiations with the U.S. as long as the Israeli attack on Iran continues. He claimed the U.S. directly supports the Israeli strikes, the Iranian foreign ministry said. But two sources with direct knowledge said Araghchi told several foreign ministers in the last 36 hours that Iran will be willing to resume negotiations with the U.S. once its retaliation for the Israeli attack is over. The bottom line: Putin told Trump in their 50-minute call that Russia is ready to continue direct negotiations with Ukraine after June 22, Putin's adviser Yuri Ushakov said. Trump said he asked Putin to end the war in Ukraine and noted that Russia and Ukraine are moving forward with a large prisoner swap.

Pence says Trump shouldn't take advice from Putin on Iran-Israel conflict

Pence says Trump shouldn't take advice from Putin on Iran-Israel conflict Show Caption Hide Caption As Iran and Israel tensions escalate, President Trump issues warning As the conflict with Israel and Iran escalates, President Trump warned Iran not to strike any U.S. targets. WASHINGTON ― Former Vice President Mike Pence said his ex-boss, President Donald Trump, should not be taking advice from Russian President Vladimir Putin about the conflict between Israel and Iran. Pence's June 15 remarks on CNN's "State of the Union" came after Trump said he discussed Iran and Israel in a phone call with Putin on Saturday, as the two countries have traded attacks following Israel's widespread June 13 air strikes targeting Iran's nuclear program. "As Vladimir Putin continues his brutal and unprovoked invasion in Ukraine using drones provided by Iran," Pence said. "I would say respectfully to the administration, we ought to be looking elsewhere than Vladimir Putin for advice on how to deal with this situation." Trump presidency: Trump says Putin called to wish him a happy birthday ‒ and talk about Iran Detailing his one-hour June 14 call with Putin, Trump said Iran is a "country (Putin) knows very well." Trump added that Putin "feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end, to which I explained, his war should also end." Trump has embraced a friendly relationship with Putin, a stark departure from former President Joe Biden, who helped rally much of the world to condemn Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Trump has blamed both Putin, long considered a U.S. adversary, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for Russia's war in Ukraine. 'Full strength and might': Trump warns Iran against attacking the United States Pence, a staunch defender of Israel, said the United States needs to continue supporting Israel "with the support they need." He also applauded Trump for the president's statement earlier on Sunday, warning that the "full strength and might" of the U.S. military would be used if Iran attacks the United States "in any way, shape or form." Pence ended his political relationship with Trump following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. As vice president, Pence refused to act on pressure from Trump to reject electoral votes submitted by states before certifying Joe Biden's 2020 election victory. In the 2024 election, Pence declined to endorse Trump's presidential bid. Reach Joey Garrison on X @joeygarrison.
