Gogoi, CM engage in battle of words

Guwahati: War of words between Congress' Assam president Gaurav Gogoi and CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is gaining momentum ahead of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections. Participating in an election rally at Koklabari, Gogoi said Congress wants to give scholarships to the children of the state, but Sarma wants to lift guns and patronise violence. Gogoi added that during the Congress regime, peace and harmony began in BTC through the Bodo Accord. However, to safeguard his chair, CM Sarma want unrest in BTC and violence across Assam. He urged people to remain alert against this conspiracy. He alleged that United Peoples' Party Liberal (UPPL) and Bodoland Peoples' Front (BPF) are silent now, unwilling to oppose because their remote controls are in Sarma's hands. "Himanta keeps three phones — one to call Amit Shah, another to call BPF leader Hagrama Mohilary, and the third in his back pocket to talk to UPPL chief Promod Boro. He keeps a secret phone so that if Congress forms govt after assembly polls, he can use it to approach Congress after dumping BJP to save himself," he added. Reacting to Gogoi, CM Sarma told the media that Gogoi is worried after seeing a sea of people at Sarma's meeting compared to a smaller gathering at Gogoi's meeting. "Nobody should take any learning from a person who praises Pakistan in Parliament," he added. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). 21 deported to Bangladesh, says Assam CM

Synopsis Assam has deported 21 individuals to Bangladesh for allegedly entering Sribhumi district illegally, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. This action is part of ongoing efforts to identify and deport illegal migrants, with approximately 400 people having been pushed back recently. Guwahati: Security forces in Assam have deported 21 people to Bangladesh who allegedly illegally entered the state's Sribhumi district earlier in the week, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said."Freedom at midnight? Quite literally!" Sarma posted on 'X' on Friday. He said the process of identification and pushback of illegal migrants would continue. Authorities have, of late, pushed back some 400 people who have tried to enter the state from neighbouring Bangladesh. Of these, around 58 were alone in Sribhumi senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the state, Debabrata Saikia, has written to home minister Amit Shah, urging that security along the Assam-Bangladesh border should be strengthened."I am writing to bring to your kind attention the recurring "pushback" operations being undertaken by the Assam Police along the Assam-Bangladesh border since May 2025," he said in his letter, a copy of which ET has reviewed. "The state government has on multiple occasions, acknowledged such operations and deportations of undocumented Bangladeshi nationals, which raises critical questions about the efficacy of our border management framework and the current coordination mechanisms." He wrote that as per official statements, a new strategy of pushback was announced on May 10 this year. It was followed by operations starting on May 23, in which over 50 individuals were apprehended. The subsequent operations on May 31, June 8, June 27, July 6, and August 3 led to the repatriation of over 300 said these operations, despite the deployment of the Border Security Force across the 267.5-km stretch of the Assam-Bangladesh border, suggest that infiltration continues to be a serious challenge.

Assam, Meghalaya CMs meet in Guwahati, discuss various issues

Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma at his office here on Saturday and held discussions on various issues. Assam, Meghalaya CMs meet in Guwahati, discuss various issues "Today, in Guwahati, I had an excellent discussion with the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya Shri @SangmaConrad Ji," Sarma posted on X. "We discussed a wide gamut of issues to strengthen the mutual growth of both our sister states," he said. Sarma, however, did not elaborate on the issues discussed by the chief ministers of the two neighbouring states. The two CMs had last met on June 2 and agreed to erect border pillars in five among the six of the total 12 disputed areas, by Independence Day. The two states had signed an agreement in March 2022 to resolve the border dispute in six areas. Border pillars were decided to be constructed in five areas and not in the sixth at Pilingata as there were some "difference of interpretation", because of which the deputy commissioners of both the states were scheduled to discuss the matter. Meghalaya was carved out of Assam as a separate state in 1972 and it had challenged the Assam Reorganisation Act, 1971, leading to disputes in 12 areas of the 884.9-km-long border between the two states. Sarma, on becoming Assam's chief minister in May 2021, had announced that his priority was to resolve long-standing boundary disputes with the neighbouring states. Subsequently, three regional committees were set up in August 2021 to resolve the issues in a phased manner. The regional committees submitted their recommendations which were handed over to Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi by the two chief ministers, followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on March 29, 2022 to resolve disputes in six of the 12 areas. According to the agreement, 36.79 sq km of the disputed area was taken up for settlement in the first phase, with Assam getting full control of 18.51 sq km and Meghalaya 18.28 sq km of land.
