CM orders swift paddy procurement and monsoon preparedness

Time of India6 days ago

Hyderabad: With the monsoon arriving 15 days early, chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Tuesday directed senior officials and district collectors to expedite the remaining 10% of paddy procurement to avoid loss to farmers and disruption due to rains.
He also urged officials to prevent any loss of life or property, and to control seasonal diseases and potential Covid-19 resurgence.
Addressing a video-conference with ministers and collectors at the command control centre, Revanth congratulated the agriculture and civil supplies departments and farmers for a record paddy yield of 2.75 crore metric tonnes. He highlighted that the Congress govt had procured 21.5 lakh metric tonnes more than the previous year, crediting Rs 12,184 crore directly into farmers' accounts within 48 hours.
So far, 64.5 lakh metric tonnes—90% of the season's yield—have been procured. "Ensure that every grain is collected. If needed, hire local godowns to prevent rain-related delays. Farmers must not suffer due to storage issues," he said.
Revanth also addressed politically motivated misinformation campaigns, warning against false projections of farmer deaths as procurement-related suicides. "Such malicious claims should be countered effectively.

Book cases if necessary," he directed.
Health readiness
Anticipating heavy rains, the CM directed GHMC, police, traffic, electricity, and disaster response teams to stay alert. Due to early rains and a 29% rainfall surplus forecast, Revanth ordered timely availability of seeds and fertilisers.
"Take strong action against black marketing and those selling spurious seeds. If needed, book habitual offenders under the PD Act," he said.
District collectors must visit fields, raise farmer awareness, and appoint special officers to monitor stocks.
Housing and land reforms
Revanth asked officials to create awareness about the Bhu Bharati Act through public meetings, and to conduct the third phase of revenue sadassus (meetings) from June 3 to 20.
On the Indiramma Indlu housing scheme, he said: "District collectors must oversee implementation. Mandal-level price control committees should monitor construction material costs."
He directed in-charge ministers to tour districts on May 29–30 and submit reports by June 1.

Met dept extends rain, storm warning; AQI improves

New Delhi: A day after strong squally winds hit the city, the weather department issued a warning of another thunderstorm with rain in the region for an additional day. A yellow alert was issued for storms and gusty winds reaching up to 60kmph on Monday and Tuesday. However, until 8pm, no major weather activity was observed on Monday. A weather scientist noted that as per the radar imagery around 5pm, a cloud cluster moved towards Delhi. "But the latest imagery suggests that the cloud cluster has moved southeast of Delhi and is currently causing hailstorm activity over Nuh, Alwar, Bharatpur, etc," said Krishna Mishra, a scientist at India Meteorological Department, adding that there were chances that Delhi might also experience strong winds. Rain is expected on Wednesday, too, but no colour-coded warning has been issued yet. "Very light to light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 40-50kmph, temporarily reaching up to 60kmph, is likely over many places in Delhi," forecast IMD. On Monday, the city's base station, Safdarjung, recorded the maximum temperature at 36.1 degrees Celsius, four notches below normal, against 37.9 degrees on Sunday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo The minimum temperature was 22.6 degrees Celsius, four notches below normal, against 27.2 degrees a day before. The humidity oscillated between 95% and 46%. The winds remained southwesterly, with the speed up to 15kmph. According to IMD, the maximum temperature on Tuesday is expected to be 35-37 degrees Celsius. On Sunday, the city logged 16.8mm rainfall, with very strong winds that reached up to 92kmph at Palam, resulting in the delay and diversion of several flights. The weather department expects southwesterly winds to bring additional moisture, which may lead to a thunderstorm and squally winds. Meanwhile, the city's air quality improved within the moderate category. The air quality index, on a scale of 0 to 500, was 158 against 197 a day earlier. According to the advance weather early warning system, AQI is likely to remain moderate till June 5. In the next six days, the air quality is likely to be in the moderate to poor category, EWS predicted.

Northern lights set to shine over Canada tonight; Millions could witness rare solar storm display

A powerful solar storm is set to light up the skies over Canada on Monday night(June 2), offering a rare opportunity for millions to witness the mesmerizing aurora borealis . Cities where you can watch the northern lights tonight The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA ) has forecasted that the northern lights will be visible directly overhead across nearly all of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon , and the Northwest Territories, including cities like Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Yellowknife, and Whitehorse. Large parts of Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada may also catch a glimpse of the lights overhead or on the northern horizon. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Undo Timings and conditions The celestial display is expected to peak overnight between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. EDT. However, viewing conditions will depend on clear and dark skies, away from city lights. In areas near the southern edge of the aurora's visibility, such as parts of Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and southwestern Ontario, an unobstructed view of the northern horizon will be essential. This heightened aurora activity is due to a coronal mass ejection (CME) that occurred on May 31, originating from the highly active sunspot region AR4100. Live Events The CME reached Earth on June 1, leading to a G4-class geomagnetic storm, one of the more severe classifications. Such storms can cause disruptions in satellite operations, communication systems, and power grids, but they also produce spectacular auroras, with the northern lights potentially visible at lower latitudes than usual. While the northern lights are typically confined to regions like Alaska and Northern Canada, stronger solar activity in recent years has extended visibility farther south. In 2024, the lights were visible as far south as Texas, a rare occurrence. Although the current forecast does not confirm if Texas is included this year, past events raise the possibility that the state could again witness the aurora. Places away from city lights are ideal For those hoping to catch a glimpse of this natural wonder, it's advisable to find a location away from city lights with a clear view of the northern horizon. Even in areas where the lights could be visible directly overhead, avoiding light pollution and having clear conditions will provide the best viewing experience. The northern lights will also be visible on Tuesday night(June 3), but with a more limited range. As always, the best viewing conditions depend on clear, dark skies and minimal light pollution.
