Gharial population rises to 372 in Bihars Gandak river, up by 113 in 5 years
The gharial congregation sites are currently being monitored by local nest watchers and project experts of the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) in the state, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department's Additional Chief Secretary Harjot Kaur Bamhrah said.
'The number is significant and has enthused forest department officials and environmentalists. The number of gharials was 54 after release in the river in 2015, and it has now increased to 372 this year," Bamhrah told PTI.
A total of '62 adult gharials (males), 98 sub-adults, 110 juveniles and 102 yearlings were observed" during the survey conducted from February 24 to March 4, covering a 326-km river stretch, from the Gandak Barrage to the Sonepur-Hajipur bridge, she said.
The survey showed a 43.6 per cent increase in the number of gharials observed in the river as compared to the previous highest of 259 in 2020, WTI Chief Ecologist Samir Kumar Sinha told PTI.
'This is, of course, a major success in gharial conservation efforts in Bihar, particularly in the Gandak river, the second successful breeding site for the fish-eating crocodiles in India after the Chambal Sanctuary area," Bamhrah said.
Concerted conservation efforts by the forest department officials of the Bihar government and WTI experts in the last ten years to revive gharial breeding in the Gandak river in West Champaran district have yielded results as '372 long-snouted crocodiles have been sighted in the river", Prabhat Kumar Gupta, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, told PTI.
The gharial population survey was conducted in the Gandak river covering six sections: Gandak Barrage-Paniahawa, Paniahawa-Ratwal, Ratwal-Mangalpur, Mangalpur-Dumaria, Dumaria-Rewa and Rewa-Sonepur this year.
'The sighting of 372 gharials of all sizes is a matter of great satisfaction. Our Gharial Conservation Project, launched in association with WTI, is now bearing the fruits," Gupta said.
Sinha said, 'Our project has achieved the anticipated result. Almost a 400 per cent increase in the number of gharials in the Gandak river since 2015 was noticed. Before we launched this project, the river was not known for gharials".
Of the total gharials observed in the survey, 92.7 per cent of them were photo documented, he said.
The congregation of adult male and female gharials was observed at six sites, Sinha said. PTI PKD BDC

South Delhi family finds two civet cats inside house
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 18 (PTI) A south Delhi family were found two Asian Palm Civets inside their house on Monday morning. The animals were picked up from the house and released back into their natural habitat, an NGO working to rescue wild animals said on Monday. A response team from the NGO identified the civets as a mother-child pair. when a family in Greater Kailash-II, South Delhi, found two civets inside their home, they reached out to the Wildlife SOS Delhi helpline, the NGO said in a statement. The team took them to the Wildlife SOS transit facility for observation and care. After being declared healthy by the veterinary team, the civets were released back into their natural habitat, the statement said. Kartick Satyanarayan, Co-founder and CEO of Wildlife SOS, said, 'Incidents like this remind us how habitat loss is pushing wild animals closer to human habitation. Our priority is to ensure their safe rescue and release, while also raising awareness about the importance of coexistence with wildlife." He added that Asian Palm Civets are harmless and shy creatures, but urban development has left them with limited options for food and shelter. 'It is crucial that citizens call helplines like ours instead of trying to handle such situations themselves," he said. Asian Palm Civets are nocturnal mammals that play a vital ecological role by controlling insect populations and aiding in seed dispersal. However, with shrinking forest cover and rapid urban expansion, these animals are increasingly straying into human settlements, leading to frequent conflict situations, Wildlife SOS said. Pisciculture transforming lives of farmers in UP
Lucknow, Aug 18 (PTI) A traditional banana farmer in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki district, who adopted fish farming in 2018 with three ponds on 27,000 sq ft of land, has now turned into a supplier of fish seeds for more than 350 farmers, owning 24 ponds and employing at least 10 people. Aslam Khan, 40, a resident of Bakrapur village in Barabanki, and many other farmers have become the flag bearers of the government's scheme to promote pisciculture, according to an official statement. "Through fish farming, young men and women are scripting new success stories that showcase the true strength of central and state government schemes. These stories prove that change is happening at the grassroots," N S Rahmani, Director of UP Fisheries Department, said in the statement. At present, Aslam carries out fish farming on eight acres with 24 ponds and two nurseries. This year, he stocked three lakh Pangasius fish seeds, of which 2.20 lakh have already yielded 162 tonnes of fish sold. Aslam's farms have 40,000 fishes, each weighing 400-500 grams, ready to be sold in December. Since January 2019, he has been supplying over 350 farmers across Barabanki, Lucknow, Sitapur, Unnao, Ayodhya, Bahraich, and Gonda. Ascribing his success to the support he received from the state fisheries department, Aslam said that the handholding by the department has been commendable. Sharing his journey since 2018, Aslam said he was first intrigued by fish farming when he visited a fish farm at Gangwara village, which was being run by Mohammad Asif Siddiqui. After facing continuous losses in banana cultivation, he began learning pisciculture and started with three ponds on 27,000 sq ft of land, raising Pangasius fish. Initially, Aslam suffered losses due to poor fish seeds and lack of knowledge. Without losing hope, he again stocked his ponds with 35,000 Pangasius fingerlings and produced 21 tonnes of fish within six months. Each fish weighed about 700 grams. The first produce from his farm earned an income of ₹ 8,40,000. Buoyed by his achievement, in 2018 Aslam made another pond on a one-acre land in which he kept Indian major carp fish along with Pangasius. Aslam has also installed a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) at his farm. The RAS unit would help him in rearing Pangasius seeds during winters, so that by February and March, fish seed can be provided to other farmers. To further benefit the farmers, Aslam also aims to register a farmer producer organisation (FPO). Since 2017, Pangasius farming is being done in about 25 hectares in Nindoora block (in Barabanki), while each farmer like Aslam is providing direct employment to at least ten people. "Under the leadership of the state government, the benefits of every scheme are reaching the communities and every household. By embracing opportunities like fish farming, people are not only becoming 'atmanirbhar' (self-reliant), but are also driving the economic growth of the entire state," Rahmani said.

Kerala LSGD Minister visits centenarian digital literate
Kochi, Aug 18 (PTI) Kerala Local Self Government Department (LSGD) minister M B Rajesh on Monday visited M A Abdullah Moulavi, a 104-year-old man who achieved digital literacy through a government programme, and said he is the 'hero of the real Kerala story". He said Moulavi, a native of Asamannoor panchayat in Ernakulam district, has proved that age is not a barrier for learning. 'Maulavi is Kerala's pride. He is the hero of the real Kerala story," he told reporters here. Stating that Kerala is becoming the first digitally literate state in the country, the minister said Maulavi is the protagonist in the history of that change. He also said achieving digital literacy at this advanced age is proof of his willpower and determination. 'Age is not a barrier for anything," Rajesh said, pointing out Maulavi's rare achievement. This centenarian is one among nearly 22 lakh persons in the state who have become digitally literate in Kerala through the path-breaking 'Digi Keralam" programme rolled out by the state government, which eventually paved the way for a digital revolution in the southern state. Maulavi"s son Faizal said recently that his father chooses his favourite social media reels and watches important news on YouTube without anyone's help after receiving training under the initiative. With the passing of 99.98 per cent of total learners who achieved basic digital skills through the massive initiative, Kerala is now all set to be declared as the 'first digital literate state" in the country. Launched on September 22, 2022, by the Local Self-Government Department (LSGD), Digi Keralam is the drive to attain complete digital literacy in the state on the lines of the total literacy campaign mode in 1991, according to authorities. As part of the drive, digitally illiterate people in the society were identified through a survey, and they were given training from switching on and off a smartphone to using various digital tools and accessing government services online. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will officially declare the state as totally digitally literate in a function to be held at the Central Stadium here on August 21, official sources said.
