PM Anwar calls for laws to protect copyright, local creativity amid AI boom

The Star4 days ago
SHAH ALAM: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has proposed the introduction of legal provisions to safeguard the copyright and authenticity of local creative works in light of the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
Anwar said the Communications Ministry and the Digital Ministry must take immediate action to ensure that local works are protected from risks and vulnerabilities arising from the advancement of AI technology, such as plagiarism.
"On the issue of copyright, the protection is not limited to cartoonists but also covers films, poems and other creative works, which at times face copyright challenges due to the development of AI,' he said at the launch of 'Melukis Dengan Hati: Biografi Perjalanan Seni 50 Tahun Karya Zunar' at Pustaka Raja Tun Uda on Tuesday (July 22).
"This legal protection is to ensure that creativity and the artistic abilities of creators are not stifled by copyright disputes or questions over the authenticity of their works,' he added.
Present at the launch were Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
Also present were the Prime Minister's wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail; Selangor Public Library Corporation director, Datin Paduka Mastura Muhamad; and renowned cartoonist Zulkiflee Anwarul Haque, better known as Zunar. – Bernama

Digital Ministry drafting AI bill to combat deepfake videos

PETALING JAYA: The Digital Ministry is presently drafting an Artificial Intelligence (AI) bill to regulate the fast-evolving technology and combat deepfake videos as well as AI-related crimes, said Minister Gobind Singh Deo. 'The legislative draft is currently being refined through a comprehensive and inclusive engagement process involving various stakeholders. 'This approach is taken to ensure that the forthcoming legislation is holistic, balanced, and aligned with current technological developments as well as the nation's needs,' he said in a written parliamentary reply to Wong Chen (PH-Subang). Gobind added that the government has introduced the National AI Ethics and Governance Guidelines (AIGE), which outline seven core principles, including fairness, transparency, accountability and privacy protection, that must be observed by AI developers and users. Last month, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said Malaysia is studying to develop AI legislation to address legal complexities in the digital age. She further said that she has formally written a letter to Gobind, proposing a meeting between the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) and the Digital Ministry to initiate a discussion on drafting new AI laws. According to Azalina, at present, Malaysia has no specific laws focused on AI because, unlike traditional technologies, AI operates on an entirely different platform.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 (Bernama) -- The Bursa Malaysia Technology Index inched up 0.04 of a point to 52.36 while most of the other sectoral indices remained in negative territory. This may be due to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement yesterday that the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS), launched in May 2024, has attracted RM63 billion in investments, comprising RM58 billion in foreign direct investments and RM5.2 billion in domestic direct investments. 'Malaysia's transition from a back-end assembly base to a design-to-packaging semiconductor hub remains a work in progress.

"Malaysia's transition from a back-end assembly base to a design-to-packaging semiconductor hub remains a work in progress. "However, we are encouraged to see that the NSS is gaining investor traction, institutional support, and regional momentum. With RM63 billion in committed investments, an increase in local champions, and stronger ASEAN alignment, Malaysia is positioning itself as a neutral, indispensable node in the global chip supply chain,' it added. CIMB affirmed that this is one of the key advantages in ensuring Malaysia remains an attractive destination for semiconductor manufacturing globally. At lunch break, Vitrox shares went up 20 sen to RM3.99, Infomina was 11 sen better at RM1.07 and SMRT was 6.5 sen higher at 90.5 sen. - Bernama Trading ideas: MMAG, Keyfield, KAB, Rimbunan Sawit, Jentayu, AYS, Country Heights, Metronic, Nestle, ViTrox, Oriental Interest, KIP REIT, Luxchem, Betamek
