(Reuters) -Stock and crypto trading platform eToro beat Wall Street views for profit in the second quarter on Tuesday, as retail investors maintained a firm risk appetite despite broader macroeconomic uncertainty due to new tariffs.
Shares of eToro rose nearly 1% in premarket trading after results.
Retail trading activity has been strong this year, buoyed by gains in U.S. equity markets and renewed interest in high-risk assets such as cryptocurrencies and tech stocks.
Analysts say volatility from geopolitical tensions and shifting trade policies has done little to deter individual investors, who have been quick to capitalize on market swings and look for opportunities to "buy the dip".
Net contribution, which deducts the cost of revenue from cryptoassets and margin interest expense, jumped 26% to $210 million from the year-ago quarter, driven primarily by increased trading activity.
New-age fintech platforms have chipped away at the dominance of Wall Street incumbents in recent years, luring younger and tech-savvy investors with low fees, slick mobile apps and access to a wider range of assets.
Funded accounts, referring to customers with deposited money, increased 14% in the quarter to 3.63 million, eToro said.
A combination of accessible trading apps, volatile price moves and a steady flow of market news has kept retail engagement high, helping these platforms sustain growth.
The financial technology company's assets under administration grew by 54% year-on-year to $17.5 billion.
The company went public in May in a bumper U.S. initial public offering, with its shares surging on debut after pricing above the marketed range. They had ended the previous session about 6.3% above their IPO price.
eToro posted an adjusted profit of 56 cents per share in the three months ended June 30. Analysts, on average, had expected 50 cents, according to estimates compiled by LSEG.

Brazil offers $5.6 billion credit to exporters hit by US tariffs

BRASILIA: Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Tuesday said his government would provide 30 billion reais ($5.55 billion) in credit as part of a plan to support companies that export goods and are affected by steeper tariffs imposed from Washington. In an interview with local news outlet BandNews, Lula said this was an initial amount to help the exporters, adding the package will also include support through government purchases. The government is set to announce on Wednesday the highly anticipated plan at an event 11:30 a.m. (1430 GMT) in the capital Brasilia, according to the office of Lula's chief of staff. Reuters had reported last week, citing sources, that Brazil's government was mulling shifting some 30 billion reais from a fund managed by state development bank BNDES to support local firms hit the tariffs. The U.S. hiked the levies imposed on the imports of Brazilian goods to 50% from 10% earlier this month, although products including orange juice and aircraft were exempted from the increase. Petronas to expand LNG exports to new Asian markets

Published on: Tuesday, August 12, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 12, 2025 By: Bloomberg Text Size: The company plans further exploration to maintain domestic production levels after hitting peak output. (Reuters pic) Kuala Lumpur: Petroliam Nasional Bhd is seeking to expand its liquefied natural gas exports to growing Asian markets while also supporting Malaysia's rising energy needs, which are partly driven by a data-centre boom. The state-owned company's diversified portfolio – which includes a newly operational export plant in Canada – will enable it to meet overseas demand for gas, said Adif Zulkifli, chief executive officer of Petronas' gas and maritime business. The firm plans to expand beyond its traditional markets – Japan, China and South Korea – to countries in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam and the Philippines, he said in an interview. But the gas-producing country is also eyeing more imports because its reserves are dwindling at a time when its energy requirements are growing thanks to a proliferation of power-hungry data centres serving the artificial intelligence industry. Malaysia imported about 3.3 million metric tonnes of LNG in 2024, up from 2.1 million tonnes in 2021, according to Bloomberg's vessel-tracking data. Petronas will continue exploration for more resources to sustain its domestic production, which has already peaked, Adif said. It operates one of the world's largest LNG terminals in Bintulu on the Sarawak coast and has enough gas to fill up its plant there 'for as long as we need', he added. 'We have brought in a number of upstream projects to make sure that we are able to deliver gas and sustain that for the next 20 to 30 years,' Adif said at the company's headquarters on the 42nd floor of the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday. 'We are also gearing up to bring in more imports into Peninsular Malaysia.' Traditional gas suppliers in Asia are being forced to rethink their export strategies as they try to reconcile rapid economic growth with falling domestic reserves. Malaysia, which was the world's fifth-largest shipper of the super-chilled fuel last year, usually meets domestic demand by topping up with cargoes from Australia. Petronas CEO Muhammad Taufik said in June that Malaysia is set to be increasingly dependent on LNG imports in the next five years. In a bid to appease US President Donald Trump and secure a lower tariff from Washington in August, the Asian nation agreed that Petronas would buy US$3.4 billion of US LNG annually. Malaysia leaning into imports to support its energy needs highlights a broader trend of once hefty producers having to turn to buying the fuel from overseas. Traders are also seeing more opportunity to sell gas to traditional exporters in the future. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? US Treasury criticises India's stance in trade negotiations

WASHINGTON: U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday said several large trade agreements were still waiting to be completed, including with Switzerland and India, but the South Asian country had been 'a bit recalcitrant' in talks with the United States. Bessent told Fox Business Network's 'Kudlow' he hoped the Trump administration could wrap up its trade negotiations by the end of October. 'That's aspirational, but I think we are in a good position,' he said, adding ' I think we can be, we will have agreed on substantial terms with all the substantial countries.' - Reuters
