Maoist leader arrested in AP's Alluri Sitharama Raju district
1 2 Visakhapatnam: The G Madugula police in Andhra Pradesh's Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district have arrested Chaitho alias Naresh alias Santhu, a divisional committee member and secretary of the Pedabayalu-Korukonda Area Committee of the banned Maoist outfit. The arrest was made during a search operation in the forest area between Rasarayi–Burralapanuku–Chintaguppa villages of Killamkota panchayat in G Madugula mandal. Chaitho, a native of Bhaliaput village in Koraput district of Odisha, was drawn into the outfit in 2011 at the age of 15 through revolutionary songs. According to ASR district superintendent of police (SP) Amit Bardar, Chaitho had a long history of involvement with the Maoists, having joined the Jana Natya Mandali (JNM) and secured party membership in 2012. He worked with the technical wing of the Andhra–Odisha border special zonal committee (AOBSZC) from 2013 to 2016 and was promoted to divisional committee member in 2025. Chaitho was allegedly involved in eight exchanges of fire with police personnel and was found in possession of firearms and Maoist literature. India-Maldives Bilateral Trade Jumps 3-Fold In Last 7 Years
New Delhi: Bilateral trade between India and the Maldives has registered a more than 3-fold jump over the past seven years from $223 million in 2017–18 to $680 million in 2024–25, according to official figures. India's exports to the Maldives rose from $217 million in FY 2017-18 to $561 million in FY 2024-25, while imports from the Maldives expanded from $6 million to $119 million during the same period. The trade between the two countries is expected to increase further with Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing a Rs 4,850 crore line of credit to the Maldives during his recent visit to the island nation last month. Additionally, PM Modi announced that discussions for a free trade agreement have also started between the two countries. India has decided to promote renewable energy in the Maldives and will share its experience in this sector with the Indian Ocean neighbour. PM Modi visited the Maldives at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu and attended the country's 60th Independence Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour. This also represented a turnaround in relations with the Muizzu government, which came to power in 2023. The turnaround in the bilateral ties assumes significance as President Muizzu, known to be close to China, was known for his anti-India rhetoric while in the opposition as part of his political strategy to oust the earlier government. The Maldives is one of India's key maritime neighbours in the Indian Ocean Region, and the overall bilateral ties, including in areas of defence and security, witnessed an upward trajectory under the previous governments in Male. This sentiment is embedded in India's Neighbourhood First policy and the MAHASAGAR vision, which recognises that the security and prosperity of the region are inseparable. India's approach is grounded in the belief that small island nations are not peripheral actors in global affairs but are frontline states in the fight against climate change, guardians of critical sea lanes, and partners in maritime security. The Maldives, straddling vital shipping routes, occupies a central place in India's Indian Ocean strategy.

NYC mayor elections: Anthony Weiner makes wild prediction on Zohran Mamdani — here's what he said
Anthony Weiner (Image credit: X/@TheView) and Zohran Mamdani (AP image) Ex-congressman Anthony Weiner on Sunday predicted that top Democratic leaders will eventually have no choice but to endorse socialist Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani for New York City mayor elections. Speaking in a radio program, Weiner said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries will ultimately back Mamdani as the party's nominee. 'Some people can stay on the sidelines, and I think you're going to see a lot of people do that. but the leaders of the party, which Chuck and Hakeem are, are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea,' he said. 'They've got the Democratic Party, who's now chosen their nominee.' Weiner said top Democrats such as Schumer and Jeffries have delayed endorsing Mamdani to avoid hurting moderate party members in the 2026 midterm elections. ' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo The reason Chuck and Hakeem have been so slow to endorse Zohran is because they don't want to harm their moderate candidates all around the country, which are the ones they need to take back the House and Senate,' he said. 'That's a political question for them.' Republicans are using Zohran Mamdani's candidacy to attack Democrats, hoping to paint the entire party as too far left. At the same tine, Weiner has also predicted that Mamdani is likely to win the mayoral race as the Democratic nominee, as reported by New York Post. 'Unfortunately, or fortunately … I think we're going to have Zohran Mamdani as the mayor in New York City,' he said. Two other Democrats, incumbent Mayor Eric Adams and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, are also running as independents in the upcoming November elections. However, Weiner had dismissed their chances of defeating Mamdani. Weiner whose career collapsed amid sex scandals, recently attempted a political comeback by running for a City Council seat in Manhattan's District 2. He was soundly defeated by Assemblyman Harvey Epstein. Weiner's political downfall began in 2011 when he resigned from Congress after admitting to sending explicit photos to several women. In 2017, he was convicted of sexting with a minor after prosecutors said he pursued an online relationship with a 15-year-old girl. He served prison time for the offense.
