Sikh Regiment In British Army Soon? Here's What We Know

Is the United Kingdom considering having a Sikh regiment in its forces? Several media reports have emerged recently hinting that the British Army is considering a proposal to induct a Sikh regiment.
However, the UK's Ministry of Defence has denied, saying there are no such proposals in this regard. 'We want to do something to recognise Sikh contributions in some way, but not through a Sikh regiment," sources in the defence ministry told Times of India .
The issue came into the limelight after Lord Sahota, a member of the House of Lords, asked UK defence minister Lord Coaker in the House of Lords on July 7 regarding the progress on having a Sikh regiment in the British Army.
Coaker said, 'Let me consider that request from my noble friend. I am quite happy to meet him and see what more we can do to recognise the contribution of soldiers such as Sikhs."
Coaker's remark led to media headlines like 'UK considering to have Sikh Regiment."
Lord Sahota's grandfathers have served in the British Indian army, including the 15th Punjab Regiment.
Speaking to TOI , he said he does not think this proposal will not against the UK Equality Act, highlighting the Staffordshire Regiment, Brigade of Gurkhas, the Royal Yorkshire Regiment, Royal Welsh and Royal Regiment of Scotland.
As per the TOI report, there are around 200 Sikhs in the British Armed Forces at present.

The Sikh Regiment's origins are found within the British East India Company Army. Sikh soldiers were notably recruited following the First Anglo-Sikh War (1845–46) and even more extensively after the Second Anglo-Sikh War (1848–49).
Serving with distinction as part of the British Indian Army, the Sikh Regiment played a significant role in both World War I and World War II. During the First World War, over 100,000 Sikhs were part of the British Indian Army, with a number of Sikh soldiers receiving the Victoria Cross, the highest British military honour. 'Farm laws introduced in 2020': Arun Jaitley's son reacts to Rahul Gandhi's accusations of his father
NEW DELHI: Arun Jaitley's son, Rohan Jaitley, on Saturday rebutted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's claim that the late Finance Minister had been sent to 'threaten' him for opposing the Modi government's now-repealed farm laws. Speaking at the Congress-organised Annual Legal Conclave 2025, Gandhi recalled a tense exchange, saying, 'I remember when I was fighting against the farm laws, Arun Jaitley was sent to threaten me. He said, 'If you continue down this path, opposing the government and fighting us on the farm laws, we'll have to take action against you.' I replied, 'I think you don't know who you're talking to. We're Congress people, we're not cowards. We never bend. The British couldn't bend us.'' Gandhi's remark quickly drew a sharp rebuttal from Jaitley's son, Rohan Jaitley, who accused the Congress MP of misrepresenting facts and politicising the memory of the deceased. 'Rahul Gandhi now claims my late father, Arun Jaitley, threatened him over the farm laws. Let me remind him, my father passed away in 2019. The farm laws were introduced in 2020,' Rohan Jaitley said in a statement. Calling the claim factually incorrect and in poor taste, Rohan further added, 'More importantly, it was not in my father's nature to threaten anyone over an opposing view. He was a staunch democrat and always believed in building consensus.' He described his father's approach to politics as one that welcomed open discussion rather than confrontation. 'If at all such a situation was to occur, as it often does in politics, he would invite free and open discussions to arrive at a mutually acceptable solution to all. That was simply who he was and that remains his legacy today.' Rohan Jaitley also urged Gandhi to exercise caution while speaking about deceased public figures. 'I would appreciate Rahul Gandhi being mindful while speaking of those not with us,' he said, recalling a previous instance where Gandhi had allegedly politicised the final days of former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. 'He attempted something similar with Manohar Parrikar ji, politicising his final days, which was in equally poor taste. Let the departed rest in peace,' he added. Gandhi's broader speech at the conclave included allegations of voter fraud in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, criticism of the Election Commission of India, and remarks about constitutional decline under the current government.

ANI "I don't think you have an idea...": Rahul Gandhi claims Arun Jaitley sent to "threaten" him Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday claimed that the NDA government had sent the late Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to "threaten" him for trying to fight against the farm laws that were introduced by the Narendra Modi government earlier."I remember when I was fighting the farm laws, Arun Jaitley was sent to me to threaten me. He told me, 'If you carry on opposing the government, fighting the farm laws, we will have to act against you. ' I looked at him and said 'I don't think you have an idea who you are talking to,'" Rahul Gandhi said. The Congress leader addressing the Annual Legal Conclave 2025 also launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging its complicity in large-scale voter fraud."The truth is that the election system in India is already dead. The Prime Minister of India holds office with a very slim majority. If 15 seats were rigged, we suspect that the number is over 70 to 80, he would not have been the Prime Minister of India. We are going to prove to you in the coming few days how a Lok Sabha election can be rigged and was rigged," Gandhi said. The Congress leader went on to credit lawyers, among others, for obtaining freedom from British rule, saying that the freedom movement was fought legally in actuality. However, he alleged that the constitutional architecture built by lawyers was being "destroyed". In the annual legal conclave titled 'Constitutional Challenges - Perspectives & Pathways' organised by Congress, Gandhi said that all talks about the constitution wouldn't happen if it weren't for lawyers. "You (lawyers) are the people who started Congress. Congress was essentially (made up of) lawyers. We wouldn't have got freedom if the lawyers of this country had not fought for freedom. All this talk about the constitution, the constitution would not be here if it had not been for lawyers," Gandhi said while addressing the gathering here. Crediting lawyers for envisioning the constitution, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) Lok Sabha said that the entire constitutional architecture is a result of a legal mind and fraternity, since it would have been impossible for people who don't understand law to frame the constitution. "Freedom movement was actually fought, in large measure, legally. You are the backbone of the Congress party. You are also the people who envisioned the constitution. It would have been impossible for people who don't understand the law to frame this (constitution). It was the legal mind, fraternity that built the entire architecture," he added. Gandhi asserted that the architecture built by lawyers was being "destroyed" systematically at every front. "I am telling you this, that it is the architecture that you build, which is being destroyed today. It is being systematically unravelled on every front. Some of it is visible while the other is hidden," he said. Speaking on the Rafale deal, Gandhi claimed that a document clearly mentioned that the PMO and the National Security Agency (NSA) interfered with the deal. He said that the document would have brought down any government in any country of the world, but nothing happened. "We had a document on the Rafale deal. The document said clearly, black and white, that the Prime Minister's office and the NSA have interfered in the Rafale deal and damaged it. This document itself would have brought down any government in any country of the world. Nothing happened. You know where the document went. You know where the document died," he top leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, KC Venugopal, Abhishek Singhvi, Ajay Maken, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mukul Wasnik, Jairam Ramesh, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, Telangana CM Revanth Reddy, Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Ashok Gehlot, Bhupinder Hooda, Prithviraj Chavan, Digvijaya Singh, Bhupesh Baghel, Gaurav Gogoi, Salman Khurshid, DK Shivakumar were present at the conclave.
