2025 Emmy Predictions: Outstanding Television Movie

Yahoo17-07-2025
We will update this article throughout the season, along with all our predictions, so make sure to keep checking IndieWire for the latest news from the 2025 Emmys race. The nomination round of voting takes place from June 12 to June 23, with the official Emmy nominations announced Tuesday, July 15. Afterwards, final voting commences on August 18 and ends the night of August 27. The 77th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are set to take place on Sunday, September 14, and air live on CBS at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.
The State of the Race
This is not meant to be rude to the film 'Am I Ok?,' a Sundance 2022 premiere that finally made it onto HBO Max last summer, but do voters know that it's an Emmys contender? There are actual Outstanding TV Movie contenders that have campaigned so much harder, so it is a surprise to see the Dakota Johnson-led comedy still place so high on prognosticators' lists. In fact, HBO Max itself has never been nominated in this category before. HBO proper hasn't even been nominated for TV Movie the past two years.

That is likely set to change with new HBO contender 'Mountainhead,' which continued the risky strategy of premiering at the very end of the Emmys eligibility window, but did so in a smarter way, putting it on voters' radars the second Emmys season started, and impressing them with how quickly it was made. It is also written and directed by 'Succession' creator Jesse Armstrong, who already has several Emmys to his name.
'Mountainhead' is one of four films that are on just about every nominations predictions list, with two other contenders being obvious enough for the general public to guess. First is 'Rebel Ridge,' one of the biggest Netflix films of the year, which has taken star Aaron Pierre to a new level of success where he's even getting James Bond casting rumors leveled at him. Interesting too that the streaming service did not submit 'Carry-On,' a similarly popular hit action film that premiered closer to the holidays, as it would have probably cannibalized Netflix's chances of winning this category.
The other movie that seems bound for an Emmy nomination is 'Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,' the fourth Bridget Jones film starring Renée Zellweger. Though it premiered on Peacock in the United States, the movie was actually a big hit abroad. The Emmy race for Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie is pretty thin too, so Zellweger, who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in the first film, is likely to have an Emmy nomination that will draw more voters toward watching the sequel.
Less on the public's radar, but a staple of the most recent TV awards is the film 'Out of My Mind,' streaming on Disney+. The YA novel adaptation about a young girl with cerebral palsy trying to find her voice was a sleeper hit at Sundance 2024, and has since won a Peabody Award and been one of the Television Academy honorees this year. The film especially has great word-of-mouth, eliciting tears from the majority of the audience at its official for your consideration event at the Academy Museum.
In terms of what could actually be nominated in the slot people predict 'Am I Ok?' will be in, look no further than Tina Mabry's 'The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat.' Not only does it star Uzo Aduba, who is a TV Academy favorite, it comes from reigning category winner Hulu.

Itzhak Perlman's NYC townhouse has sold for $8.18M

No strings attached to this deal! Violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman and his musician wife Toby Perlman have sold their historic, turn-of-the-century Upper West Side townhouse for $8.18 million, according to city property records filed on Monday afternoon. That's less than half of the home's original $17.5 million asking price in 2022. Advertisement 8 Perlman has long been known as one of the greatest violinists in history. The listing was last asking $11.9 million. Itzhak Perlman, an Israeli-American who won 16 Grammy Awards and four Emmy awards, along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, is known for his brilliant breadth of work, which includes performing the haunting solo violin passages in the Oscar-winning score for 'Schindler's List.' 8 When you are one of the world's greatest musicians, a concert grand piano is key. Rise Media Advertisement At 20 feet wide, the 8,000-square-foot dwelling is aptly close to Lincoln Center. It comes with five to six bedrooms, five baths, four powder rooms and six fireplaces — along with 1,500 square feet of outdoor spaces featuring a roof deck, a landscaped terrace and a garden. Design details through the home, which was built in 1901, include the generous use of bold, happy colors like yellow, intricately patterned hardwood floors and lots of custom woodwork. On the parlor level, a gracious layout includes 12-foot ceilings and a great room, while the main floor eat-in chef's kitchen is extra large and anchors the property. There's also plenty of room for a concert-sized grand piano — as well as a light-filled dining room with skylights and access to the garden, plus a wood-paneled library. The Perlmans loved raising their kids on the Upper West Side, but they are empty-nesters now and it's time for the next family to build their dreams here, friends told Gimme Shelter. The listing brokers were Richard Steinberg, Alexander Mignogna and Charles Beda, of Compass.

Jessica Williams returns to 'The Daily Show' to roast Trump

"The Daily Show" is welcoming back a familiar face. Host Jon Stewart threw cameras mid-monologue to Jessica Williams, a famed alum of the political satire program, on Monday, July 28. Williams, fresh off an Emmy nod for her role in Apple TV+'s "Shrinking," served as a regular correspondent on "The Daily Show" from 2012 to 2016. Back at her old stomping ground, Williams, 35, took aim at President Donald Trump, joking that he was using notable Black people to distract from a refusal to release the "Epstein Files." "Trump is trying to throw every Black person he can think (of) in front of the scandal to distract us," Williams quipped. "First, he released the Martin Luther King Jr. files. Then he accused Obama of treason. And now he wants to prosecute Oprah and Beyoncé?" How did new 'Daily Show' host do? Our quick take on Josh Johnson's debut Williams' comments come as the Trump administration continues to weather a scandal over the investigation into convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Throughout his run for office, the president speculated that the government was withholding key evidence after the financier died by suicide in a New York jail cell before making it to trial. Now in office, however, the president has opted not to release further information, and the Department of Justice has maintained that there was no elusive "client list," with notable names who associated with Epstein. The move has angered some of Trump's most loyal supporters, and provided fodder for over a week of late-night monologues. Trump, Williams joked, was targeting "all of our greatest Black people," in order to distract from the scandal. "Who's next? Michael Jordan? Michael B. Jordan? Michael C. Jordan?" she continued. "We're about a week away from him saying that Urkel did 9/11. Urkel? Did he do that?" She then wondered aloud if she would be next, quipping that recent Emmy nominations might just make her famous enough to be a target. Williams, who has since ventured into more serious dramatic roles, occasionally swings by "The Daily Show" to remind audiences of her comedic prowess. She is one of several comics and actors who arrived in Hollywood after a stint on the Comedy Central program.
