ED's first-ever raids in Andaman & Nicobar linked to cooperative bank fraud
The case pertains to the Andaman Nicobar State Cooperative Bank (ANSCB) and its vice chairman Kuldeep Rai Sharma. Sharma, a 57-year-old Congress leader, is a former MP of the UT (2019-24).
Nine places in and around Port Blair and two in Kolkata were raided by the officials of the central probe agency under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said.
This is the first time that the agency has undertaken searches in the Union Territory located in the Bay of Bengal, they said.
Sources said the agency has recovered some documents pointing towards "large-scale" irregularities in the grant of loans and overdraft facilities by ANSC Bank.
The role of former Congress MP Sharma is also under the scanner of the ED, according to the sources.
They alleged that a group of about 15 entities/companies were created by suspects for the benefit of Sharma and loan facilities of more than Rs 200 crore were fraudulently taken by these entities from the ANSCB.
The sources said documents collected indicate that loan facilities were extended to various shell companies/ firms by ignoring the laid down procedures and guidelines of the bank.
The money laundering case stems from an FIR of the Crime and Economic Offences Wing of the Andaman Nicobar Police.

Congress to stage protest outside Assembly against slum demolitions
The Congress's Delhi unit on Sunday said it will stage a protest outside the Assembly on the first day of the Monsoon Session on Monday, primarily against the demolition drives carried out in slum clusters across the city. The party said it will raise other issues such as the 'deteriorating law and order' situation, the 'false promise' of ₹2,500 per month to the women, and waterlogging. It will also protest against the school education Bill for being 'anti-parent and anti-education'. He [Rahul Gandhi] urged the Delhi government to clarify its intentions towards the slum dwellers, instead of playing with the lives of the poor people,' Mr. Yadav said. Alleging that the Arvind Kejriwal government has locked thousands of flats constructed by the Congress under the Rajiv Rattan Housing Scheme, aimed at providing better living conditions for the poor, for 11 years, Mr. Yadav said, 'Those houses should be repaired and allotted soon to the residents of slums.' Meanwhile, on Saturday, Ms. Gupta inspected government flats built for economically weaker sections (EWS) in 2011 in Sultanpuri, which are in a dilapidated condition. She said that the government is working to meet the demand for one million houses.

Two awarded life term for 2022 murder of Dalit youth in Ambedkar Nagar
Lucknow: A court in Ambedkar Nagar on Saturday sentenced two men to life imprisonment for axing a 28-year-old Dalit youth to death in 2022. Special judge Ram Vilas Singh convicted the duo under IPC's sections 302 (murder) and 34 (liability in criminal act) and section 3(2)(v) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 each. Special public prosecutor Sudip Mishra told TOI that the incident occurred in Gaya Ghat Pipri village under the Alapur police station area on the night of July 31, 2022. According to the FIR filed by Ramvriksha, the incident unfolded after former village pradhan Ranu Tiwari visited his younger brother Jalandhar, an electrician, to request a repair. Jalandhar agreed to do the work the following morning and subsequently left for the nearby Khajhapur. Around midnight, his wife heard noises and alerted the family. "When Ramvriksha tried calling up Jalandhar, the phone was answered by an unknown person who told them to come to the fields. Upon reaching, the family found Jalandhar lying severely injured. He was rushed to the govt hospital in Baskhari and then referred to the district hospital in Akbarpur, where he died during treatment," said Mishra. During the investigation, the police collected testimonies, scene maps, postmortem reports, call detail records, and video evidence. A charge sheet was filed, and the case was tried in the special SC/ST court. Hearing the case, the special judge found both the accused guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. "Despite the defence's plea that the accused were first-time offenders and came from impoverished backgrounds, the court sided with the prosecution, which highlighted the caste-based nature of the crime and the gravity of the offence. While the defence argued that there were no eyewitnesses and the case was a result of village enmity, the court held that the evidence — including the victim's dying statement, witness testimonies, and supporting forensic materials — was consistent and credible," the special public prosecutor said. "The judge concluded that the crime was intentional, caste-motivated, and brutal in nature," Mishra said.
