Nothing Phone (3): Cool, capable—but with several flaws, not quite a flagship

Minta day ago
Nothing has built its identity around being unconventional—transparent designs, quirky glyph lights, and now, a dot matrix display. With the new Phone 3, priced at ₹79,999, the company is attempting a leap into flagship territory. But while it's the best phone Nothing has made so far, it still falls short of being a true flagship.
Let's be clear: the Phone 3 doesn't come with the most powerful Snapdragon chipset, nor does it pack top-tier camera hardware. It lacks an IP69 rating, Qi2 wireless charging, and several other premium features. In fact, the glyph lights from earlier generations have been replaced by a minimalist dot matrix display. This phone might offer solid upgrades over the Phone (3a) Pro, but it doesn't quite justify its premium price in the Indian market.
Realistically, the Phone 3 is trying to compete with base models of flagship series like the iPhone 16, Galaxy S25, Pixel 9, Vivo X200, and Oppo Find X8—a tough crowd to stand out in.
Unusual design choices
The new Glyph Matrix features 489 individually firing LEDs that form a dot matrix display for basic animations and 'Glyph Toys" like a clock, stopwatch, volume/battery indicators, spin the bottle, and more. A button on the back lets you cycle through these. It's more fun than functional, but does add personality—something Nothing excels at.
The rest of the back design is divisive. The asymmetrical camera layout, with individually ringed lenses, has triggered mixed reactions. That said, the design eliminates table wobble, and it has grown on me over time. At 218g, the Phone 3 is on the heavier side. Flat sides and an aluminium frame give it a solid in-hand feel, and the Gorilla Glass Victus back adds durability. Up front, there's a 6.7-inch OLED display with slim bezels, 1.5K resolution, and 120Hz refresh rate. It hits 1,600 nits brightness in auto mode. However, the front uses Gorilla Glass 7i—a downgrade from Victus—and there's no LTPO panel, just a standard LTPS one. Still, the display is crisp, colourful, and vibrant.
Under the hood
Nothing's Carl Pei recently dismissed the industry's obsession with chipsets, and perhaps that's why the Phone 3 uses Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, instead of the higher-end 8 Gen 3 Elite. For everyday users, the difference is negligible—everything feels snappy and responsive. But push it with gaming or benchmarks, and it runs noticeably hot.
Where it really impresses is battery life. The 5,500mAh battery easily lasts over a day, even with heavy use. I watched videos, took hundreds of photos, made calls, and still ended each day with charge left. There's no charger in the box, but it supports 65W fast charging via USB PD 3.0, delivering 50% in 22 minutes and a full charge in about an hour.
Android skin
Running on Android 15, Nothing OS 3.5 continues to be one of the best Android skins out there. It's clean, fluid, customisable, and free of bloatware—head and shoulders above the likes of FunTouch OS and HyperOS. New this time is Essential Space, an AI-powered universal search tool that debuted with the Phone (3a) series. It can search through your entire device and, if needed, perform web searches. It's genuinely useful, but privacy-conscious users may hesitate since it requires deep permissions. Overall, the UI experience is one of the Phone 3's biggest strengths.
The Phone 3 features four 50MP sensors: a primary, ultra-wide (114°), periscope telephoto (3x zoom), and a selfie camera. The camera UI is minimalist—no clutter or unnecessary filters, just simple shooting modes and toggles.
Photo quality has improved significantly. In good lighting, images are detailed, colour-accurate, and natural—without the oversharpening common in mid-range phones. Low-light shots were surprisingly good too, with minimal noise and strong contrast.
That said, it's still not up to the level of the top camera phones of 2025. And oddly, the Phone (3a) Pro has a better telephoto lens, even though the Phone 3 has better image processing overall.
The verdict
So, should you buy it? Well, the truth is, despite its strengths, the Phone 3 doesn't offer great value at ₹79,999. It's trying to do a bit of everything but doesn't truly excel in any one area. The optical fingerprint scanner is less secure and awkwardly placed. The Gorilla Glass 7i and LTPS display are mid-range components. USB 2.0 port feels outdated. No IP69 rating or Qi2 wireless charging. All these choices raise eyebrows for a phone priced this high.
There's no denying that it is a bold and polished product—the best Nothing has produced. It's got an innovative design, fantastic Android experience, good cameras, usable AI tools, and excellent battery life. But at this price, there are just too many better options—OnePlus 13 being one of them, offering stronger specs at a lower price.

Weekend Drive by Hormazd Sorabjee: Green ride, grey area

Copenhagen, with its clean air and green credentials, was a fitting backdrop to drive Mercedes-Benz's newest electric car, the CLA Electric. Compact, stylish and packed with tech, it's aimed at buyers who want to go electric without sacrificing luxury or brand cachet. And when it arrives in India by the end of the year, it could be (at around ₹60 lakh) one of the most desirable EVs. The stylish Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric arrives in India by the end of the year. What makes the CLA Electric special is not just its badge or sleek design, it's how cleverly it's been engineered. The platform, designed primarily for electric cars, is also flexible enough for hybrids or petrol engines. That's a nod to real-world buyer behaviour: Even in developed countries, not everyone's ready to go fully electric just yet. The version we drove, the CLA 250+, uses a single electric motor at the rear and an innovative two-speed gearbox, rare for EVs. This helps it achieve an astonishing claimed range of up to 792km. We managed over 730km on a single charge. That's good enough for a Mumbai-Goa trip. Mercedes-Benz's CLA Electric is one of the most aerodynamic cars ever made. It's one of the most aerodynamic cars ever made. Every crease, curve and flush surface, hidden door handle and smooth underbody panel is designed to reduce drag and stretch efficiency. The trade-off? Ground clearance. At just 107mm, the European model is too low for Indian roads. Hopefully, Mercedes will up the clearance on the India-bound models. Inside, the cabin is minimalist and modern. A wide glass panel stretches across the dashboard which houses two screens: 10.25 inches for the driver and a 14-inch central display. A third passenger-side screen is available for Europe. Given our love for tech, Mercedes would be wise to include that option for India. There are a few quirks. Adjusting the air-con fan still requires navigating through two steps, something that would've been simpler with a fixed icon or button. But the steering-mounted controls, long a sore point in modern Mercs, now offer tactile feedback and feel far more precise. Even the seat adjusters now deliver a reassuring, well-engineered click. There's mood lighting in 64 colours, a thumping optional Burmester 3D sound system, and a nifty 'frunk' under the bonnet. However, like many EVs, it lacks a spare tyre, something Indian buyers may want to retrofit given our roads. There's mood lighting in 64 colours, and a nifty 'frunk' under the bonnet. In the back seat, taller passengers may find legroom tight, and the battery under the floor raises your knees awkwardly — not ideal for long chauffeur-driven journeys. The fixed panoramic glass roof adds a bright, airy feel but could become a heat magnet in the Indian summer. Mercedes claims it offers UV-protection. On the road, the CLA is smooth, quiet, refined. It's quick without being wild, and the handling feels confident and balanced. The new brake system feels more natural than in earlier electric Mercs, and regenerative braking (used to charge the battery while slowing down) is now easier to control. Ride quality has also improved, with a much softer edge than the previous petrol CLA. The CLA Electric isn't trying to be a Tesla rival or a track monster. Instead, it's a compact luxury EV that focuses on style, tech, and range. For those who value design, efficiency and a quiet, high-tech cabin, it makes a strong case. Google loses U.S. appeal over app store reforms in Epic Games case

Alphabet's Google on Thursday failed to persuade a U.S. appeals panel to overturn a jury verdict and federal court order requiring the technology company to revamp its app store Play. The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in a unanimous ruling, rejected claims from Google that the trial judge made legal errors in the antitrust case that unfairly benefited "Fortnite" maker Epic Games, which filed the lawsuit in 2020. Epic accused Google of monopolising how consumers access apps on Android devices and pay for transactions within apps. The Cary, North Carolina-based company convinced a San Francisco jury in 2023 that Google illegally stifled competition. U.S. District Judge James Donato in San Francisco ordered Google in October to restore competition by allowing users to download rival app stores within its Play store and by making Play's app catalog available to those competitors, among other reforms. Donato's order was on hold pending the outcome of the 9th Circuit appeal. The court's decision can be appealed to the full 9th Circuit and ultimately to the U.S. Supreme Court. In a statement, Lee-Anne Mulholland, Google's vice president of regulatory affairs, said the appeals court's ruling "will significantly harm user safety, limit choice, and undermine the innovation that has always been central to the Android ecosystem." The company said it would continue to focus on "ensuring a secure platform as we continue our appeal." Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said in a social media post: "Thanks to the verdict, the Epic Games Store for Android will be coming to the Google Play Store!" Google told the appeals court that the tech company's Play store competes with Apple's App Store, and that Donato unfairly barred Google from making that point to contest Epic's antitrust claims. The tech company also argued that a jury should never have heard Epic's lawsuit because it sought to enjoin Google's conduct — a request normally decided by a judge — and not collect damages. Epic has defended the verdict and court injunction, telling the 9th Circuit judges that the Android app market has been "suffering under anti-competitive behavior for the better part of a decade." In the trial court and in the appeal, Epic disputed arguments by Google that changes to its app business ordered by the court would harm user privacy and security. Microsoft filed a brief backing Epic, as did the U.S. Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission. Epic separately is battling Apple over a U.S. judge's order requiring the iPhone maker to give developers greater freedom to steer consumers to make purchases outside its App Store. Apple has appealed a ruling that said it violated a prior injunction in a lawsuit that Epic filed in 2020.
