CSIR‑CFTRI, Mysuru, is commemorating its 75th year with platinum jubilee celebrations that began in October 2024.
Honouring the institute's journey, a book named 'The Living Campus' was formally unveiled by the dignitaries during an event recently. It captures the institute's rich heritage, scientific accomplishments, and vibrant campus culture. This publication reflects CFTRI's longstanding contributions to food science and its evolving significance in national development.
Sridevi Annapurna Singh, Director, CSIR‑CFTRI, Mysuru, traced the institute's origins back to the 1950s and underscored its longstanding legacy in technological innovation and industrial collaboration.
Drawing on her decades of experience as both an innovator and institute leader, she shared personal insights on her research journey and the evolution of CFTRI. Stressing the importance of industry–academia synergy, she advocated for deeper collaborative efforts to drive mutual growth and development. The Director also highlighted on impactful technologies developed at CFTRI, aimed at benefiting both industry and national priorities.

Drilling for innovations, IISER-Bhopal pioneers India's first CO2 storage well

Bhopal: IISER Bhopal and CSIR-NGRI launched a well-drilling initiative in India as part of the DeCarbFaroe programme, exploring CO₂ mineralisation in basalt for carbon storage purposes. The collaboration encompasses nine countries across Europe and Asia, facilitating the exchange of scientific expertise and advancing sustainable energy transitions. India serves as a key participant in broadening these endeavours. The department of science and technology, govt of India provides financial support for both PERBAS and DeCarbFaroe initiatives. "Our lab was at the forefront of understanding the science of CCS in basalt formations," said Dr. Jyotirmoy Mallik, the lead researcher of this project. "Our recent studies reveal that factors like temperature, porosity, and local mineralogy are pivotal for rapid and secure CO₂ mineralisation, and our models help optimise site selection for future storage projects," added Dr. Mallik. CO₂ emissions, primarily from fossil fuel use, remain the main driver of climate change, impacting weather systems and biodiversity. As India becomes the third-largest carbon emitter globally, with significant coal reliance, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) offers a vital solution, allowing continued coal usage until 2060. The Geodynamics and Petroleum Geology Lab, led by Dr. Jyotirmoy Mallik at IISER Bhopal's department of earth and environmental sciences, is establishing India's first CO₂ injection well in the Deccan Traps basalt. "CCS technology extracts CO₂ from industrial emissions before release into the atmosphere. The captured CO₂, mixed with water, is injected deep underground for permanent storage in geological structures, specifically saline aquifers or Deccan trap basalt rocks," said Dr Malik. The Deccan Basalt, covering 500,000 sq. km with considerable depth, presents distinctive CCS opportunities in India. Compared to traditional storage in porous sandstones, basalt enables swift CO₂ mineralisation when combined with water, creating stable carbonate minerals within years. This mineralisation ensures minimal escape risk, securing carbon storage for millennia. The Deccan Trap's mineral composition, abundant in plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene, supports effective CO₂ transformation, although regional basalt properties require detailed assessment. This project extends PERBAS, an international programme evaluating carbon storage safety in flood basalts. PERBAS incorporates lessons from successful trials in Iceland and the United States, where CO₂ mineralisation occurred within two years, applying this knowledge to improve storage approaches in the Deccan Trap. IISER Bhopal and CSIR-NGRI are commencing well drilling under DeCarbFaroe, concentrating on basalt CO₂ mineralisation for scalable carbon sequestration. "This multinational partnership promotes knowledge exchange and supports clean energy adoption, positioning India as a crucial partner," said Dr Mallik.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jammu, on Sunday formalized a collaboration by signing a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM) and three pioneering start-ups here to accelerate translational research, foster technology-driven entrepreneurship and bolster regional economic development, an official said. The MoU was inked by IIT Jammu Director Manoj Singh Gaur and CSIR-IIIM Jammu Director Jammu Zabeer Ahmed in the presence of senior scientists, faculty and officials from both institutions. The MoU will also help streamlining pathways for laboratory innovations to reach commercial deployment in healthcare, sustainable materials and agri-biotech sectors, he added. The collaboration would be jointly governed by senior leadership from IIT Jammu and CSIR-IIIM in close partnership with the three start-ups, fostering an ecosystem where science, technology and entrepreneurship intersect to drive India's innovation-led growth, the official said. Senior officials from both organizations underscored the MoU's potential to transform Jammu into a hub of scientific and entrepreneurial excellence. Gaur said 'this tripartite alliance exemplifies IIT Jammu's commitment to bridging cutting-edge research with societal impact'. 'By combining our engineering capabilities with CSIR-IIIM's life-science expertise and dynamic start-ups, we will fast-track the development and commercialization of solutions that benefit our region and beyond,' he added.
