Investors poured nearly Rs 12,000 crore into midcap and smallcap funds in July despite market weakness. Here's why
In July, mid-cap and small-cap funds saw record inflows despite elevated valuations and market caution. Experts warn of higher correction risks, urging staggered SIPs or STPs over lump sum investments. Conservative investors may wait, while disciplined allocation remains crucial for navigating volatility and maximising long-term potential in these segments.
ETMarkets.com Despite mid- and small-cap indices ending in the red in July, investor interest in these categories remained surprisingly strong, with nearly Rs 12,000 crore poured into them. According to the latest data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), mid-cap funds recorded a 38% surge in inflows, while small-cap funds saw an even sharper 61% jump compared to June.Experts attribute this surge to strong earnings growth, favourable economic indicators, and a notable rise in retail investor participation.'It is crucial for investors to strategically adjust their portfolio allocations based on their risk profiles. These categories should only make up a specific portion of their equity portfolios to avoid being overly exposed to current valuations, which can be high, especially for small-cap funds,' said Rajesh Minocha, Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Founder of Financial Radiance, in an interaction with ETMutualFunds.

On the other hand, the Nifty Smallcap 100 – TRI and Nifty Smallcap 250 – TRI declined 5.61% and 3.37%, respectively, during the same period.
'Other than these, flows into other categories were quite similar. It appears investors are now allocating to all categories of equity MFs without too much bias towards a single category, though the tilt is still more towards smallcaps,' said Dr. Vikas Gupta, CEO & Chief Investment Strategist at OmniScience Capital.Gupta added, 'Indications are that investors are getting savvier and paying attention to the PE ratios of the indexes linked to different fund categories before allocating. If not, they should start considering this parameter. Of course, revenue and earnings growth expectations for these categories are also relevant but not easily accessible to retail investors.'In July, small-cap funds recorded the third-highest inflow among the 11 equity sub-categories, with Rs 6,484 crore, compared to Rs 4,024 crore in June. Mid-cap funds saw an inflow of Rs 5,182 crore in July, up from Rs 3,754 crore in June. These two categories have been witnessing a steady surge in inflows for the past two months. This resilience comes despite valuations in these segments already being elevated and market participants cautioning about possible volatility ahead.According to AMFI's monthly note, both mid-cap and small-cap funds recorded their highest-ever monthly inflows within their respective sub-categories.With this surge in inflows, the question arises: are there risks to be aware of, and should investors enter now or wait for a correction? Minocha responded that investors must recognise the inherent risks of high valuations, which significantly increase the chances of a sharp market correction in these segments. Additionally, mid-cap and small-cap funds carry higher liquidity risks compared to large-cap options.

Investors with a moderate risk profile should keep their portfolio mainly in flexi-cap and large & mid-cap type funds,' he further recommended. On the performance front, mid-cap funds on average lost 1.92% in July. There were 30 funds in the category, with Edelweiss Mid Cap Fund losing the most at around 3.78%, while Helios Mid Cap Fund delivered the highest positive return of 0.17%.During the same period, small-cap funds on average lost 1.23%. Out of 30 funds in this category, JM Small Cap Fund saw the steepest decline of around 3.25%, while PGIM India Small Cap Fund offered the highest positive return of around 0.92% in July.Given the negative and minimal positive returns, Minocha recommends that in the current environment, a staggered Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is undoubtedly the superior choice, as it effectively minimises timing risk and balances out inherent market volatility.'Those with a lump sum amount can park the money in a liquid fund and then do a Systematic Transfer Plan (STP) into equity funds weekly. On the other hand, a lump sum investment at this stage carries a significant risk of short-term drawdowns in the event of a market correction.''Mid-caps and small-caps can provide higher returns in the long run, driven by the Indian growth story. However, near-term returns could be low due to stretched valuations. Selective investing and disciplined allocation will be key to navigating this phase successfully,' he added. One should always invest based on their risk appetite, investment horizon, and financial goals.

South Korea Is Offering A Workation Visa For Indians But There's A Catch
If you have ever dreamed of sipping coffee in Seoul while sending emails to your boss back in India, South Korea's F-1-D Workation Visa - also called the Digital Nomad Visa - might just be your ticket. Launched on 1 January 2024, as a pilot project, this visa allows remote workers to live in South Korea for up to two years while working for companies based outside the country. The catch? It's not for everyone - the eligibility rules and income requirements are strict. But if you meet them, you could spend the next year (or two) working from the Land of the Morning Calm. The Digital Nomad Visa The F-1-D visa is issued for 1 year initially and can be extended once for another year, allowing a maximum stay of 2 years. The processing time is around 10-15 days, although in some cases it can take a little longer. Applicants need to show an annual income exceeding USD 66,000 (roughly Rs 58 lakh) - which is about twice South Korea's per capita Gross National Income. The Eligibility To apply for the digital nomad visa, you've to be: Be at least 18 years old Have at least 1 year of experience in your current industry Be employed by a company outside South Korea or own an overseas business Only work remotely - you cannot take up employment with a South Korean company or do profit-making activities in the country Have your employer's approval to work remotely from overseas Medical insurance is mandatory and must cover at least Rs 83 lakh for medical treatment and repatriation. The cover must be valid for your entire visa period. Documents Needed For Indian Applicants If you are applying from India, you'll need: Visa application form (Form No. 17) with passport photo Passport with at least 6 months validity Employment verification letter stating your role is remote, for at least 3 months in South Korea Proof of income - at least two of the following: employment certificate, salary slips, 3 months' bank statements, Income Tax Return, or pay stubs Indian criminal record certificate (issued within 6 months, apostilled or notarised by the Korean Embassy) Criminal records from any other country you've lived in for 1+ years in the past 5 years Medical insurance certificate meeting the coverage criteria Where And How To Apply Indians can apply at South Korean embassies or consulates in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, or Kolkata. If you are already in South Korea on a tourist visa (B-1, B-2, or C-3), you can apply at local immigration offices. Here's a step-by-step process: 1. Check eligibility - income, age, work type, and experience 2. Gather and translate documents into English or Korean; apostille Indian documents 3. Schedule an appointment at the nearest Korean embassy/consulate (some accept walk-ins) 4. Submit the application with the visa fee (around USD 45) - your passport will be held during processing 5. Wait for processing (10-15 days, no express service) 6. Once approved, enter South Korea within the visa validity and apply for an Alien Registration Card (ARC) within 90 days Btw, spouses and children under 18 can join you. You'll need marriage and birth certificates (apostilled if issued outside Korea) along with company or school letters confirming work or leave arrangements. Remember, The F-1-D visa does not lead to permanent residency in South Korea. Once your 2-year period ends, you must leave or switch to another eligible visa category. Bottomline For well-earning Indian professionals and entrepreneurs who want to experience life in South Korea without giving up their existing jobs, the Workation Visa is a golden opportunity. The high income threshold will keep it exclusive, but for those who qualify, it's a chance to blend work and travel in one of Asia's most dynamic destinations.

Unions to protest demanding sand, laterite stone policy on Aug 18
Mangaluru: A massive rally of workers in the construction sector and other labour organisations affiliated with CITU and AITUC will be held from Ambedkar Circle in the city and proceed to stage a protest in front of the Mini Vidhana Soudha on Aug 18. Vasanth Achari, general secretary, Construction Workers Federation, Dakshina Kannada, said the rally and protest will be held to demand the govt to ensure the supply of sand and laterite stones in Dakshina Kannada. He told reporters on Thursday, that for the past three months, construction activities in Dakshina Kannada nearly came to a halt. The authorities' actions to curb illegal laterite stone and sand extraction resulted in a shortage of raw materials for this sector. The Karnataka state govt failed to organise legal sand mining and laterite stone quarrying. Due to the current issue, the construction sector is at a standstill as red stone and sand are unavailable in the district, he said. "Various types of workers in this field are left without jobs and are struggling to make ends meet. Ordinary people are facing difficulties as their plans to build homes have been put on hold," Achari said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3BHK Transformation Possible for ₹4.5 Lakh? The question of the livelihood of construction workers, who are already on the streets, should also be a priority," said Achari. "A coastal sand policy should be formulated to ensure smooth and straightforward sand supply in the coastal districts. Opportunities should be provided for environmentally friendly sand mining and regulated laterite stone quarrying. Construction workers who are facing difficulties without jobs should be provided financial relief of Rs 10,000 per month," he added.
