Detroit Lions UDFA taking first-team reps at training camp
The Detroit Lions are continuing training camp as they prepare for their second preseason game versus the Atlanta Falcons on Friday, and one undrafted free agent is standing out.
According to Tim Twentyman of Lions.com, undrafted free agent defensive lineman Keith Cooper Jr. has had an impressive camp and has a legitimate shot of making the 53-man roster. Cooper has been taking first-teams reps at practice and has the versatility to play multiple positions on the defensive line.
"Keep an eye on rookie defensive lineman Keith Cooper Jr. out of Houston," Twentyman wrote. "He's gone from tryout player to getting some first-team reps along Detroit's defensive front."
"He's lined up at just about every position along the defensive line during camp and has made his fair share of plays. Detroit loves versatile players and Cooper's versatility could ultimately land him a job on the on the initial 53-man roster out of camp."
Cooper played three seasons at Tulane from 2021 to 2023 before transferring to Houston for his senior season in 2024. In his four-year college career, Cooper tallied 14 sacks and played multiple positions, including defensive tackle, outside linebacker, and edge rusher.
During the Lions' Hall of Fame game loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last Thursday, Cooper posted two tackles and two defensive stops in 38 defensive snaps.
Due to his versatility and size at 6-foot-5 and nearly 300 pounds, Cooper has a solid chance of making Detroit's roster and earning some playing time on special teams. The 22-year-old could also eventually find his way into the defensive line rotation, as the unit could use extra depth.

David Bednar goes longer than expected for his 1st Yankees save to end their 5-game skid
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — David Bednar got his first save for the New York Yankees after going a little longer than expected, and ended their five-game losing streak before going home. Bednar got the final five outs, all on strikeouts, in their 3-2 win at Texas on Wednesday. Bednar, already at a season-high 36 pitches and with cleanup hitter Adolis García headed to the plate, initially didn't see his new manager walking toward him. 'I was just kind of getting my mind right to face García,' Bednar said. 'I told (Boone) I wanted him and, you know, he agreed. And I just wanted to bear down and get that last one.' Bednar struck out García, finishing with a season-high 42 pitches for his most since 43 in an eight-out save for the Pirates at St. Louis on June 15, 2022. It was the third time this season Bednar recorded five outs, and the second in his week with the Yankees. Broncos salary cap update after Courtland Sutton and Zach Allen extensions
Going into training camp two weeks ago, the Denver Broncos had a little more than $12.5 million in salary cap space. After making four roster moves and giving contract extensions to wide receiver Courtland Sutton and defensive lineman Zach Allen, the team has around $5,545,012 remaining, according to an estimate from Allen will have a salary cap hit of $14.345 million this season and Sutton will have a cap hit of $13.9 million. Allen's cap charge will skyrocket to $28.625 million in 2026 while Sutton's will take a small jump up to $13.975 million. Allen and Sutton are the team's third- and fourth-biggest cap hits this year, only behind guard Ben Powers ($17.425 million) and right tackle Mike McGlinchey ($23.775 million). The team's biggest cap bargains this season include running back J.K. Dobbins ($2.065 million), safety Talanoa Hufanga ($3,411,765) and quarterback Bo Nix ($4,230,265).
