Have you tried the tequini? It's the cocktail of the summer

Times11-07-2025
By this point in the great British martini resurgence you will have your order down to a T. You'll be a firmly established member of Team Dirty or Team Twist (or the rare member of Team Both … yes they exist). You'll have a preference for the vermouth, and know if you like the trend for garnishing with drops of extra virgin olive oil, and you will, of course, have tried the trend of downsized martinis called 'tiny-tinis'.
Well, this just in from the front row of London's martini theatre: introducing the tequini. Made with tequila (if you hadn't guessed from the ridiculous nickname), it's for people who feel they have tried every formula of martini and either still can't find the one they like, or want something a little more exciting.
• The best cocktail recipes — according to bartenders
'A martini is all about pure ingredients,' says Amy Curtis, the head bartender at Experimental Cocktail Club in London. 'Making it a tequila-based version of the dry martini is a clean way to drink the spirit and enjoy it.'
Curtis says the best tequila to use is most 100 per cent blue agave versions. 'At Experimental we use Ocho Blanco. Make sure it's good-quality tequila, especially when you're drinking it clean in a martini.'
• The cocktail set to dethrone Aperol as spritz of the summer
I tried my first tequini at Henri, Jackson Boxer's restaurant in Covent Garden, where it's called the Eugene and made with olive leaf-infused dry vermouth, Muyu vetiver and Ocho tequila in an ice-cold Nick & Nora glass; no garnish. And now I can't help but notice them everywhere. At the River Cafe's Cafe, next door to the restaurant in Hammersmith, there's a tequini made with Tapatio tequila that is gently infused with the River Cafe's signature Le Ferre olive oil. Down in Padstow at CiCi's, Paul Ainsworth's bar, they have a smoky martini made with sherry and rosemary infused tequila. They are also a popular off-menu request at Claridge's, where the iconic New York bar and brunch spot Dante is popping up for the summer. If you ask the co-owner of Dante, Linden Pride, he'll whip up his signature cocktail using Casa Dragones tequila, Sipsmith lemon drizzle gin, Lo-Fi sweet vermouth, Cocchi Americano and crème de cacao. Lethal.
Nine Lives, a bar in Bermondsey, is taking it up a notch by launching its own version of a tequini next month. It uses oyster shell tequila, and for extra drama is poured tableside with a choice of Mexican spices.
• Cocktails in a tin — the ones the critic loves
Makes 1
• 50ml white tequila• 20ml dry vermouth• Dash of orange bitters• Lemon peel or olive, to garnish
1. Combine the tequila, vermouth and bitters in a cocktail shaker filled with ice and stir.
2. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a twist of lemon peel or an olive.

West Ham fans fume as club confirm signing of their former bogeyman who mocked their Conference League triumph

West Ham announced a new singing on Saturday and it hasn't gone down well with some sections of their fanbase. The club announced that striker Callum Wilson has agreed a one-year deal after his contract at Newcastle expired. The 33-year-old endured an injury-ridden campaign at Newcastle last season, starting just two Premier League games and scoring one goal in all competitions. But he has been more prolific in the past with 49 goals in 130 games for the Magpies and 67 in 187 appearances for Bournemouth prior to that. He's scored 12 goals in 16 games against the Hammers, more than he has against any other club, earning a reputation as somewhat of a bogeyman. That isn't the main issue supporters have, however, with Wilson having made some comments that have angered them in the past. He once scored a goal against them with his hand and went on to describe it as a 'tough of magic.' Wilson also compared West Ham's Europa Conference League win to winning a trophy on FIFA. Responding to the announcement of the signing, one fan wrote: 'delighted to welcome Wilson - a man who mocked our European trophy, said Michail Antonio would never play CL, and made a career out of scoring against us. Truly the West Ham way. Another said: You know Callum that most Hammers were against you signing, for a number of reasons, including the times when you have dissed the club over the years. 'A chance for you to put things right. Put in the hard yards and effort and play for the badge and you will find that we can be supportive. Another posted on X: 'He spent most of his career taking digs at our club and fanbase, so this doesn't surprise me, who could forget when he handballed a late equaliser for Bournemouth against us and laughed and joked about it in front of the cameras afterwards called it 'a touch of magic' didn't he? Speaking on his move, Wilson said: 'I'm excited to be joining a massive Football Club like West Ham. 'A Club that shares a similar passion to mine, hard work, dedication and also I strive for success so I'm glad to be a part of it. 'I'm looking forward to the challenge. There's such talent within the squad. And obviously the gaffer's come in now, he's making everybody a team - all working in the same direction to achieve the goal which is to be finishing as high as possible in the league and it's what the fans deserve, what the team deserve and it's what the squad quality deserves too.'

Spice Girl Mel B celebrates marriage with ‘spiritual' ceremony in Morocco

It comes after the 50-year-old, whose real name is Melanie Brown, married hairdresser Rory McPhee at St Paul's Cathedral in July, having announced their engagement in October 2022. In a post on Instagram, Brown said: 'We got married, again! 'A wedding so good we keep the celebration going with our closest and dearest in our fave place at @selmanmarrakech we had the time of our lives.' A post shared by 'scary spice Mel B' (@officialmelb) The singer wore a red dress with crystals and bugle beads made in a collaboration between Evelie Bridal and wedding dress designer Justin Alexander at the ceremony at the Selman Hotel on Saturday. Her choice of dress was guided by Caroline Black from London-based Evelie Bridal, who aimed to reflect her life in the US, where she is a judge on America's Got Talent. Black told the PA news agency: 'For Mel's Morocco wedding dress, we focused on trying Justin Alexander gowns with a little extra sparkle. 'Mel loved the idea of a red dress — something bold, with lots and lots of shimmer — but it also had to feel light and easy to move in. 'We drew inspiration from a variety of dresses she tried on at Evelie South Kensington, then went back and forth brainstorming with Justin Alexander and his design team. 'After several conversations and sketches, the first design took shape. Mel gave us clear feedback on what she liked and what she didn't, and the final result was beautiful. 'Mel had such a strong sense of what she wanted — it was a joy working with her and Justin Alexander to bring her vision to life.' The dress required a team of six artisans and took more than 850 hours to complete. Her husband wore an Alexander McQueen outfit featuring a white shirt and jacket with black trousers and shoes. The London wedding saw Brown joined by guests including bandmate Emma Bunton, model Daisy Lowe, and comedians Tom Allen and Katherine Ryan. The singer was previously married to Stephen Belafonte until she filed for divorce in 2017 following allegations of abuse. They have a daughter, Madison Brown Belafonte. Brown also has two daughters, Phoenix Chi Gulzar and Angel Iris Murphy Brown, from two previous relationships. With the Spice Girls, the singer had nine UK number one singles and two UK number one albums. The group was best known for songs such as Wannabe, 2 Become 1 and Who Do You Think You Are?.
