Merger of S'wak water boards brings more benefits to employees, says Julaihi
SIBU: The Sarawak government has given an assurance that moves to merge the three main water boards in the state into one single entity will be more beneficial to all employees.
State Utilities and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the merger of the Kuching Water Board (LAK), Sibu Water Board (LAS) and Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd (previously known as Northern Region Water Board - Lau) was carried out according to an approach specially designed according to the Sarawak model.
"This merger process is in the final stage and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg is expected to announce the name of the single entity and launch it in June," he said during the LAS Aidilfitri and annual get-together here on Friday (April 25) night.
Julaihi also gave an assurance that employees affected by the process would receive better deals, including pension schemes, more attractive salaries and EPF contributions.
"Insyallah, in the long run, this move will provide better benefits to all of you. So, if anyone is still concerned, don't be because the government always has your welfare at heart and knows what is best for everyone," he said.
Also present at the event were LAS general manager Abdul Malik Abdullah @ Itin Langit and Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Ministry permanent secretary Datuk Jafri Lias.
In a related development, Julaihi said the ongoing upgrading work at the Salim Water Treatment Plant (LRA) will increase its capacity from 150 million litres (MLD) to 300 MLD, making it the largest single water plant upgrade project in Sarawak to date.
"This upgrade is important because the current demand for clean water supply in Sibu has reached 200 MLD.
"With this increased capacity, coupled with the contribution of the Bukit Lima LRA (45 MLD) and Sungai Sadid LRA (4 MLD), the water supply reserve margin in Sibu can be increased to 30%," he said. - Bernama

S'wak power capacity exceeds demand
KUCHING: Sarawak now has sufficient electricity generation capacity to meet domestic needs, including supply to rural areas. Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said currently, its total capacity stands at 5,898 megawatts (MW) compared to the current demand of 4,887MW. He said this capacity has enabled Sarawak to plan energy generation strategically for the future, including targeting an electricity supply capacity of 10,000MW by 2030 to meet a projected demand increase of 7,074MW. 'By 2035, Sarawak has set a target of achieving a generation capacity of 15,000MW through various energy sources, including renewable energy such as solar, cascading power sources and pumped hydro energy storage systems. 'As part of the efforts towards establishing the Borneo Power Grid and the Asean Power Grid, we are also intensifying cross-border energy exports to realise our vision as the Battery of Asean,' he said during the winding-up session for his ministry at the state assembly sitting yesterday, Bernama reported. Julaihi said among the additional renewable energy potentials being considered are large-scale solar farms and pumped hydro energy storage systems. 'Several private companies have also submitted proposals for renewable energy generation projects, which are currently in the feasibility study stage at locations such as Bengoh, Batang Ai, Bakun and Murum dams. 'For cascading energy sources, the ministry and Sarawak Energy have held 24 engagement sessions with the communities involved in the Sungai Gaat and Sungai Tutoh areas, including the implementation of the Muja Menua ceremony in Sungai Gaat on April 4 as part of an inclusive approach with the local community,' he said. Julaihi also said that to date, Sarawak has exported around 100MW of energy to west Kalimantan since 2016 while exports to Sabah are expected to begin in the fourth quarter this year with a total of between 30MW and 50MW. 'Plans are being made to export about 1,000MW of energy to Peninsular Malaysia and up to 1,000MW to Singapore and Brunei,' he said. The move, he added, is expected to strengthen Sarawak's position as a leader in sustainable energy in the region and support Asean's aspirations for a green and clean energy transition.

Minister: 4,662 telco tower structures completed to date
File photo for illustration purposes KUCHING (May 26): A total of 4,662 telecommunication tower structures, including those on buildings, have been completed to date, said Utility and Telecommunication Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi. He said this was an increase of 81 towers when compared to the 4,581 completed towers which were reported in the last sitting in November last year. 'Of the completed towers, 4,446 or 95 per cent are on-air while the remaining 216 (5 per cent) will be operational in stages by the end of 2025. 'To date, the internet service coverage has increased to 90.2 per cent compared to 84.8 per cent as reported in the last DUN sitting,' he said in his ministerial winding-up speech today. Julaihi also updated the august House on the Sarawak Linking Urban, Rural and Nation (Saluran) initiative where to date, the state government has allocated RM2.3 billion as an intervention measure to accelerate internet coverage expansion in rural areas under this initiative. 'A key component of Saluran is the construction of Sarawak Multimedia Authority Rural Telecommunication (SMART) towers. 'So far, 585 out of 618 SMART towers have been completed of which 18 of them are repeaters. Of the completed towers, 480 are operational, while the rest will be fully operational in stages by the fourth quarter of 2025,' he said. On the federal government's National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (Jendela), Julaihi said a total of 906 out of 909 telecommunications towers have been completed under the initiative's first phase. 'Of this number, 795 towers are operational with 4G services, while the remainder will be fully operational in stages by the fourth quarter of 2025.' Petronas can apply for licence exemptions, says Sarawak minister

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : National oil company Petronas may apply to be exempted from obtaining licences for projects that do not clash with Petroleum Sarawak Berhad's (Petros) role as the sole gas aggregator, a state minister said. Sarawak utility and telecommunication minister Julaihi Narawi said such exemptions could be considered, provided these projects are unrelated to the supply, sale, retail or distribution in the gas sectors, which fall under the sole purview of Petros, the Borneo Post reported. 'The joint declaration acknowledges Petros as the gas aggregator appointed by the Sarawak government in the exercise of its executive authority,' Julaihi was quoted as saying in the state assembly, referring to the joint statement by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg. 'Both the prime minister and the premier of Sarawak have expressly stated that this appointment must be respected by all parties involved in the business of gas distribution in the state.' He said any agreement and arrangement related to the supply and sale of natural gas in Sarawak must align with Petros's role as the gas aggregator, as outlined in the joint declaration. He expressed confidence that the joint declaration will benefit Sarawak and serve national interests by strengthening investor confidence, particularly among international companies in the gas distribution sector. Among the matters in the joint statement is the understanding that all federal and Sarawak state laws related to the distribution of gas within the state must coexist and be respected by all parties conducting such activities in Sarawak, including Petronas and Petros. Petronas will continue to perform its functions, activities, responsibilities and obligations as mandated under the Petroleum Development Act and its associated regulations. On Thursday, Abang Johari said Petronas and its subsidiaries are not required to obtain operating licences from the Sarawak government to operate in the state. He said while Petros has been formally recognised as the sole gas aggregator in Sarawak, the authority to issue operating licences remains with Sarawak's utility and telecommunication ministry. 'The ministry also holds the power to grant exemptions. Given Petronas's status as a national oil company, the ministry will exempt them accordingly. 'We'll grant them exemptions. However, they must first apply for it,' he told reporters.
