'Beard poses no barrier to military service': Sikh Council reacts US Army's new grooming policy, no permanent shaving waivers
Sikh Council has reacted to the new grooming policy that the US Army announced, barring permanent shaving waivers beyond religious accommodations. Soldiers could face expulsion if they need shaving exemptions for more than 12 months over a two-year period, according to the new rules.
"This is about uniformity, discipline and standards, and this is about training," Steve Warren, a service spokesperson, said.
Sikh Coalition issued a statement reacting to the grooming policy and said it has been demonstrated time and time again that maintaining a beard poses no barrier to capable and honorable military service.
'Over the course of our more than 15 years of work to assist Sikhs with religious accommodations and fight for policy changes within all branches of the military, it has been demonstrated time and time again that maintaining a beard poses no barrier to capable and honorable military service," it said, adding that Sikh soldiers would not be affected by the policy as religious accommodations have been kept in mind.
But the coalition said that it would disproportionately harm individuals with medical accommodations, Black men, and South Asian men.
'We have seen elsewhere that policies that discriminate against those with a medical need to shave are often also used to infringe upon the rights of Sikhs who maintain their kesh (uncut hair) as an article of faith. While religious accommodations remain exempt from this new guidance for now, the Sikh Coalition stands in solidarity with soldiers who may ultimately be kicked out of the Army by this new shaving policy, which will disproportionately affect Black and South Asian men—especially those with medical conditions like pseudofolliculitis barbae," it said.
'We remain committed to working alongside other marginalized groups as we continue to fight for full equality of opportunity for all qualified individuals across the Department of Defense," it said.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD While the Army told the newspaper that the Secret Service's stated reason for the increase in water flow was to 'support safe navigation' of Vance's security detail for an August outing, a source said that the real reason was to create 'ideal kayaking conditions' for the vice president's family vacation. In any case, the increase of the water flow is not illegal and such alterations have been carried out previously as well to ensure the movement of watercraft providing security or transport to senior officials. However, the alteration of a river's water flow for a personal vacation and that too at a time when the administration has been cutting healthcare and food assistance of the poorest Americans is bound to raise eyebrows. Publicly available data with US Geological Survey (USGS) shows that there was indeed a sudden increase in the river level and corresponding drop in lake elevation during the early August days when Vance was vacationing in the area, according to the newspaper.

Electoral roll to be used for caste census in Karnataka
The State government has decided to utilise the electoral roll in the State for conducting the social and educational survey (caste census) for 15 days from September 22. The Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission has sought the government's permission for the procedure to be followed for conducting the survey. The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday approved a method of using electoral rolls in the State for conducting the survey using digital technology. Speaking at a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil said that the survey would be conducted in digital format. The development and supervision of the software for the digital survey would be undertaken by the e-Governance Department. He said that the publicly available electoral roll was used by the H.N. Nagamohan Das Commission for internal reservation for 101 Scheduled Castes in the State for every person aged above six. Similarly, the Backward Classes Commission would adopt the H.N. Nagamohan Das Commission's model and conduct the survey, Mr. Patil said. 50% quota to go Mr. Patil said the Cabinet has decided to do away with the mandatory 50% quota for students of the community in the non-Muslim Minority educational institutions. The colleges and technical educational institutions run by non-Muslim Minority managements would not require to enrol 50% of students from their own community to obtain Minority status. This move was intended to support communities such as Christians, Jains, Sikhs, and Parsis, who were struggling to meet the 50% threshold due to their relatively small population in the State. Among others, the Cabinet has approved ₹171.91 under the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development's (NABARD) Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) for 13 cold storages of the Agriculture Department. It also approved the Karnataka Employees' State Insurance Society as per Employees' State Insurance Corporation guidelines.

Return to party fold, SAD chief Sukhbir Badal appeals to estranged Akalis
Agency: PTI Chandigarh, Aug 7 (PTI) SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Thursday urged all the Akali leaders who left the party to return to SAD in the wake of an appeal by the Akal Takht calling for unity in the 'qaum" (community). Asserting that he always followed the directions of the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, Badal said, 'I bow my head towards the Takht. I feel it is the duty of every Sikh to obey the directives of the Singh Sahiban. I appeal with folded hands to all the Akali leaders who have parted ways with the party to return to their roots to strengthen the 'Panth' and Punjab. 'I also appeal to them to forgive me if I have hurt them in any manner, keeping in mind the need to strengthen the 'jathebandi' (SAD) at this crucial juncture." 'Some people left the party after being upset or some to form their own factions. Being the SAD president, I urge them with folded hands to return to strengthen the party," Badal said while speaking to reporters here. The SAD chief's appeal came a day after the five Sikh high priests directed all 'Panthic' and Akali factions to unite and work together for the larger interests of the 'Khalsa Panth' on critical issues such as the protection of Punjab's land and resources and defence of Sikh identity and religious articles. They reiterated that the Akal Takht belonged to the global Sikh community and stood for the rights and dignity of every Sikh. 'Any group unwilling to honour the directive issued on December 2, 2024, is free to pursue its political path. However, such factions must refrain from misleading the Sikh Sangat by falsely claiming the patronage of the Akal Takht Sahib," the resolution said.
