Cumbria could be only option left for nuclear disposal site
Cumbria could be the only area left in the search for a new nuclear disposal site, councillors have been told.Members of Cumberland Council's nuclear issues board were given an update on the search to pin down a site to build a geological disposal facility (GDF) on Monday.Three areas had previously been shortlisted by government body Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) - Mid Copeland and South Copeland in Cumbria and Lincolnshire.Councillors were told that Lincolnshire County Council plans to withdraw, however, the authority is due to meet in June after local elections, when the result could signal a change in a new council's intention.
Nuclear waste would be stored at the GDF beneath up to 1,000m (3,300ft) of solid rock until its radioactivity had naturally decayed.Earlier this month Lincolnshire County Council said it would pull out of talks unless it received "significant" further information about the plan.Two surface areas of focus had been identified by NWS in Mid Copeland, east of Sellafield and east of Seascale.In South Copeland, land west of Haverigg had been chosen.The Copeland area is already home to Sellafield, where the vast majority of the UK's radioactive nuclear waste is stored, as well as the world's largest stockpile of plutonium.Councillor Bob Kelly, a Labour representative for Millom, said it was accepted that the preferred site would be in the Copeland area.He said that the nuclear waste could not be left where it was and the preferred option would be to store it at a safe site.Kelly said: "I think Cumberland Council should have a role in how that takes place."The nuclear waste disposal site would need community support, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.NWS previously said construction would only start when a potential community had confirmed its "willingness" to host the facility.Richard Griffin of NWS told members that while the process was at a very early stage, electoral ward boundaries had to be used. He added: "It's too early to say what wards would be affected."

Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer said Thunberg was party to ' Instagram activism'. Israeli officials have received criticism after calling the group anti-semitic amid their attempts to bring food to people in Gaza. The UN has warned Gaza's population is at risk of famine. Ms Thunberg was one of 12 passengers on the Madleen, a ship carrying aid to Gaza. Israeli naval forces seized the boat without incident early on Monday about 125 miles off of Gaza's coast, according to the coalition, which along with rights groups, said Israel's actions were a violation of international law. Israel rejects that charge because it says such ships intend to breach what it argues is a lawful naval blockade of Gaza. Speaking upon arrival at Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport, Ms Thunberg called for the release of the other activists who were detained aboard the Freedom Flotilla. She described a 'quite chaotic and uncertain' situation during the detention. The activist added the conditions they faced 'are absolutely nothing compared to what people are going through in Palestine and especially Gaza right now'. 'We were well aware of the risks of this mission,' Ms Thunberg added. 'The aim was to get to Gaza and to be able to distribute the aid.' She said the activists would continue trying to get aid to Gaza.

These Downtown L.A. area restaurants are closing early due to the nightly curfew
Since last Friday, much of L.A. has been in uproar over widespread immigration raids, with many Angelenos taking to the streets to protest and others still turning to grassroots organizations to make an impact through donations, grocery drop-offs, reporting suspected ICE activity and other mutual aid efforts. In the city's hospitality industry, where a sizable portion of the workforce is made up of immigrants, restaurants and bars have been preparing for the possibility of ICE raids. Now, with the nightly curfew Mayor Karen Bass imposed on greater Downtown L.A. last night, restaurants, bars and other businesses in the area have been forced to adjust their hours, with some closing entirely out of an abundance of caution, either due to the ongoing raids or due to the possibility of civil unrest. Others, aware of confirmed ICE activity in the area, have opted to close their doors temporarily to protect immigrant communities. It's important not to underestimate the gravity of these business decisions; between the wildfires and the lingering impacts of the slowdown in the entertainment industry, many places in L.A. have already been quietly struggling with fewer guests. In alphabetical order, here is a confirmed list of restaurants, bars and other food-related businesses in and around the nightly curfew zone—which includes Chinatown, Little Tokyo, the Arts District and parts of Boyle Heights—which have either closed or announced curtailed hours to allow workers and guests to get home safely, without police interference. A consultation has been published by Cleland Community Council asking locals for their opinions on a proposed new play area in Parkside. Options include a new bike track of Multi Use Games Area (MUGA). In a statement on their Facebook page, Cleland Community Council said: 'We are working closely with North Lanarkshire Council's Community Partnership Team to develop a new proposal for a possible facility for children and young people in Parkside. 'We want to hear from you on your preference of which of these two possible facilities children and young people would want to see and would use more regularly. 'We are working to access funding through the council's Local Development Programme fund to hopefully secure the budget to create a proposal plan leading to this project.' There are also in-person consultations to be held. These will be on Tuesday, June 17, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm in Cleland Community Centre and on Wednesday, June 18, from 10am to 11.30am in Cleland Library. The issue of better play equipment for Parkside kids has been an issue for residents for several years. Back in 2022, over 700 people signed a petition demanding an upgrade to play facilities. Speaking at that time, concerned resident Lizann Carroll said: 'We have been promised facilities since even before Covid, but we are hoping the council can look at this again and bring the proposals forward. 'The kids have got nothing up here and that's just not good enough.' Progressive Change Murdostoun councillor Cameron McManus is encouraging locals to complete the survey. He said: 'This is welcome news as many have been campaigning for better play facilities in Parkside long before Covid. 'It is important people express their views. Whether it's a bike track of a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), people have to have their say. 'The more people that complete the survey then we will have a much better idea of exactly what local people are looking for.' Labour's Murdostoun councillor Louise Roarty added: 'I'm delighted this consultation has been developed to give the people of Parkside a voice to express what they consider to be the best options for the children and the community.' You can fill in the online survey by logging onto the Cleland Community Council Facebook page. The survey will close on June 23.
