Former President Joe Biden delivered the first remarks since he announced he had an aggressive form of prostate cancer Friday, speaking in a steady voice during a sombre Memorial Day gathering and later smiling and saying he's 'feeling good."
Biden spoke at an annual gathering marking Memorial Day at Veterans Memorial Park in his home state of Delaware, not far from his home in Wilmington. The event coincided with the 10th anniversary of his son Beau's death. It also comes amid renewed questions about Biden's mental and physical health after the recent publication of a book about his fitness for office.
Speaking to reporters after the Memorial Day event, he said he was already undergoing treatment for cancer, which entailed taking a pill, he said.
'The expectation is we're gonna be able to beat this," he said. 'I'm feeling good."
Biden dropped his reelection bid in July 2024 after a disastrous debate against Donald Trump, after which those in his party questioned whether he could continue as the party's nominee. Questions about his decline and how the White House staff reacted to it are at the centre of a recent book by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson, which has renewed the debate.
Asked Friday if he had a response to recent questions about his mental and physical health, he smiled and engaged with the reporter.
'You can see I'm mentally incompetent and I can walk and I can beat the hell out of both of them," he said.
In response to Democrats who question whether he should have initially run for reelection at all, he said: 'Why didn't they run against me then? Because I'd have beaten them."
During his formal remarks, he called upon the group to remember the sacrifices of those lost in battle, whose echoes he said can still be heard.
He also spoke of his son, Beau, who died at 46 of brain cancer. A twice-elected state attorney general, Beau Biden was considering a run for governor, and his death deeply affected the elder Biden.
'This day is the 10th anniversary of the loss of my son Beau, who spent a year in Iraq, and, to be honest, it's a hard day," the former president said. 'Being with all of you, quite frankly, makes things a little bit easier, it really does. So, thank you for allowing me to grieve with you."

US Woman Slams Child's Head Into Window After ‘Miss Piggy' Comment On Flight

A US woman allegedly hit a child during a flight from Orlando, Florida, to Hagerstown, Maryland. The incident reportedly happened on Memorial Day, May 26, onboard an Allegiant Airlines flight. The woman, identified as 46-year-old Kristy Crampton from Hagerstown, Maryland, allegedly became aggressive after a child made fun of her appearance. She now faces child abuse charges. The pilot of the flight contacted law enforcement to report a 'disturbance" on board. When the flight landed at Sanford Airport, police arrived to investigate. By that time, Crampton and the others in her group had already left the plane and were seen walking away from the gate. Police say the group had 'voluntarily" deplaned before officers arrived. According to a police report reviewed by People, Crampton was later detained by Sanford Airport Police and now faces child abuse charges. She appeared in court earlier this week in connection with the incident. Speaking with police, Crampton reportedly admitted to striking the child. She told officers that the boy had insulted her by calling her 'fat" and referring to her as 'Miss Piggy," a character from The Muppets. She described the child's behaviour as 'very rude" and 'disrespectful." She also said that she first tried to discipline the child by taking away their phone. This made the child angry. 'He pushed her arm off of the armrest twice before she responded by smacking him," the police said. Crampton also admitted to using physical force after the child allegedly continued to misbehave. Witnesses on board the flight told police that Crampton hit the child with her fist and a water bottle. One witness said, 'The woman was not correcting the child. She was abusing [them], whipping the s** out of the kid." According to the police report, Crampton also allegedly 'slammed" the child's head into the window during the assault. The child reportedly tried to protect himself by covering his head during the attack. Flight attendants said they did not witness the altercation directly. Authorities confirmed that drugs or alcohol were not involved in the incident. The exact age of the child has not been released. It is also unclear what Crampton's exact relationship is to the child although the report states they were travelling together as part of a group visiting Disney World. Crampton was released on May 27, on a $10,000 (approximately Rs 8.5 lakh) bond. As part of her release conditions, she was ordered not to reach out to the child for the time being.

News18 Hours after pacer Mukesh Kumar's wearing of a Number-18 kit for India 'A' against England Lions caused an uproar on social media, a new report has claimed that no player is likely to take up the number — immortalised by the recently retired Virat Kohli — in Tests 'in the near future'. According to news agency PTI, Mukesh has not officially taken up the number and just wore it for the unofficial Test, while if he's called up to the senior squad that'll play five Tests against England, his jersey number will be 49 — the one he has been wearing since his debut. The report added that just like Sachin Tendulkar's jersey No. 10 and MS Dhoni's No. 7, 'it was unlikely' that any player would be open to taking the 'burden' of the legacy number. 'Mukesh wore No. 18 during the opening 'Test' match versus Lions. But when it comes to India A squad, there are no fixed numbers as jerseys don't have names. Anyone can pick any random number. The jersey numbers are only sacrosanct for international games," the news agency quoted a senior BCCI official as saying. The report claimed that the two new members of the squad, B Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh, will also not wear the number 18 jersey. In Indian cricket, there is no official tradition for retiring specific jersey numbers, nor is there any such rule mentioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
